He goes from kind old uncle to frustrated teacher and finishes with pushy headmaster. It's quite bizarre, but he's worse in other programmes where he's desperately trying to give the answer away and comes close to losing his temper on a number of occasions. It's not in character for the old lad, but I suspect that even he would have had enough of dozy students after a few hours of filming.

I live in the UK & I've seen the American version on KZbin also. In my childhood I always watched the UK Blockbusters every teatime Monday to Friday.
