Thank you so much for the great tips! I didn't realize to lower the value range for objects farther away from the camera! This really helps and I'm learning a lot! Also, thank you for sharing your tools in the description. I've been looking for a good brush pen with nice line variation. Hoping to try out the Zebra brush pen soon!

You are so welcome! Its so funny how little things you learn along the way can make such a big difference. Its all about practicing what you learn and seeing how far you need to push things to get the effects you want :D If you have been using Micron pens, then the Zebra Brush Pen is a great transition into brush pens. they are a bit stiffer than a lot of other brush pens, and you need to ink slowly for no streaking, but as you can see, you can get great line variation with them without sacrificing line control.

+Chris Wharton "Great line variation without having to sacrifice line control"? Now, I'm even more excited to trying them out! Haha, I kinda jumped the gun by going straight from Microns to soft brush pens and found my lines as a shakey as a newborn deer learning to walk.
@ChrisWhartonArt8 жыл бұрын
That is exactly the problem I had! So this is a much better option if you like the feel of a micron and want greater line quality variation, without that whole wobbly line problem :) Good Luck!

Found your channel through one of your Inktober vids, and have been caught up in your vids ever since... I'm completely in love with your drawing style... Your character designs, your lines and your shading is amazing... Definitely inspires me as a novice artist to try some other techniques... Keep up the good work... Looking forward to the next inktober update... :D

Thanks Anna! I really appreciate the kind words :) Are you participating in Inktober this year?
@Ymer858 жыл бұрын
You are most welcome... :) No not this year... I should though... Too scared of putting anything online though... :) But I'm working on a sweet little piece, whenever I have the time, for my new little Nephew, of me holding him... I've drawn it in a cartoonish style, cause I usually take the more realistic route and I always really wanted to learn to do cartoon style drawings, but never really dared cause it didn't come as natural to me as realistic... So I figured the birth of him should be the start of me doing some things that I want to do, but have been too scared of disappointing myself, to do... wow, that's a lot of info... But yeah, I'm so grateful that there are people out there like you that make these kinds of videos so that I can learn some other methods and gets inspired... :)

I'm new to your channel and creating comics. The one issue I always have is how to fit a scene into a panel; sometimes I find the images either too big or small. I can visualize it but can't create it.

I really.. really like your style of comic drawing.. Does remind me of some big classic Belgian/Dutch comic artist. Every panel tells a story on it's own almost.. I like it.
@ChrisWhartonArt8 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I try to do just that, telling stories with each drawing. I honestly love some of the European styles. I feel like they have an amazing handle on making things look cartoony and beautiful at the same time :)

What brand of pens do you use?? It looks so nice and smooth!!
@ChrisWhartonArt8 жыл бұрын
My pencil is actually a 2mm lead holder, and the lead that makes it look so smooth is Turquoise 2mm Red Lead (which may be owned by Prismacolor now if memory serves). Check for a link in the show notes under 'Tools of the trade'. ^___^

Could I use these tips for digital drawing?
@ChrisWhartonArt8 жыл бұрын
Sure! I'm showing you an example with comic book art done in black-and-white, but all these tips could work for digital as well, depending on the style you're going for. The outline with trick may not relate to styles with no outlines for instance. 😁

I still keep messing up on the Outline, and Shadows. and yet another amazing creaton by you :D
@ChrisWhartonArt8 жыл бұрын
Thank You Loshine! I still feel like I am perfecting my use of outlines and shadows. I used to rely on my colors to do all the shading, but I have found that if I work only in black and white then the depth of field in each drawing doesn't read so well. So I have had to practice applying shadows a lot, which I feel improves the comics I make significantly whether colored or not :D
@ShibeRyan8 жыл бұрын
what I don't know yet is, "where exactly do i put the shadow, how big the area of the shadow and how dark the shadow is." and for the outline i don't know where to thicken the line.
@ChrisWhartonArt8 жыл бұрын
All good questions. For shadows, honestly, the best thing you should do observe from nature, and look at how different types of light effect objects. And for how large the black areas are, that can depend on your style and the brightness of the subject/light quality. Ask yourself how often you see full on black in nature, or really dark shadows. This sort of skill really only comes with practice. As for the outline thickness, that's a bit easier, but takes time to perfect. As a general rule, a line is usually thicker the farther away you get from the light source. but there are exceptions to this rule, and the farther something is from the viewer the thinner the lines should be. Good Luck!
