Chromaflow Colored Pencils by Derwent | Are They the Prismacolor Replacement?

As a Colour pencil Artist I can tell you that when you combine the prismacolors and the derwent drawing pencils you get pure magic

Thanks for this review. I literally just open the new pack of 24 & swatched them out. So far I like them a lot...we will see how I feel after a few other tests & a few Colored pics Will look forward to your experience with these very much, Love your channel...!

​​@@Art_by_NicoleI think comparing a wax with an oil is fine as well as using one the same as the other as there isn't a "one size fits all" technique for pencils regardless of whether they have a higher oil or wax content. Also, all pencils are oil and wax based, just depends on what is a higher content. Oil doesn't equal hard pencil and wax doesn't equal soft. For example, the Derwent Artists are very hard pencils and those are "wax based" so you'd use techniques you'd normally use with the harder pencils like what you're referring to as "oil based" ones. Caran D'ache Pablos are also (I believe) "wax based" and those are (imo) harder than a Polychromos which is "oil based". Like I'm saying, it doesn't really matter. Using the lighter layering techniques people use for oily-er pencils also works just fine for waxy-er ones. Prismas remind me more of high quality crayons in pencil form than a traditional pencil which is why you'd be able to use it differently than most other pencils. Comparing them is fine too, depends on what we are comparing. Opacity, hardness, texture, color selection, overall performance, build quality, etc are all just fine to compare between brands, it really doesn't matter because the function is still the same, and sometimes people like to compare to something so that others might understand what the product they're reviewing might be similar to. If I was talking about the Derwent Artisr pencils I'd compare them to a Polychromos before I would a Prismacolor because of their hardness, even though one is "wax based" and then other is "oil based" Anyways, that's just my two cents based on 15 years experience with many pencils as both an artist and a colorist.

They are! However, they won't have the same lightfast rating and the Lightfast pencils are more oil-based while these are wax-based. I do hope they release more soon just so we can play around with more colors.

What many people don't know about Prismacolours is that they are CRAYON colours.. almost.. They are wax crayons in pencil form.. they are wax-heavy coloured pencils, not exactly as waxy as typical childrens' wax crayons, but almost there.. Theat is why they: 1- crimble easily. 2- wither easily. 3- Very soft and creamy.. 4- highly blendable.. 5- Cover big areas fast. 6- and.. wax-blooooom.. However, Derwent original colour recipies for their coloured pencils, are based on typical, orthodox colour pencil recipies.. they were staying away from the "fragile" wax crayon recipies.. :^) I think with Chromaflow they've gotten closer.:^)0-

Where I live it isn't possible to get Amazon deliveries. I really enjoy prismacolors but I run thru them rapidly. I'm looking for a good pencil set that I can get some mileage out of.

@ColorfullyOptimistic yes. After alot of research I think Polychromos is what I need. I live far away from any city with an art shop. I get to order from Amazon like once twice per year. What would be another pencil in the oil based genre to compliment polychromos? I have all the prismacolors.

I picked these up just to use something different. Prismacolors are my favorite pencils. I used these in Worlds of Wonder. First on the castle/cave page because there are so many different elements, over 15 flowers and more leaves. I really got a large range of color with these pencils, enjoyed the pencils and the results. Then I did the strawberry mandala. Half was done in Chromaflow the other Prismas. I found a color equivalent on another channel. I thought the Prismas were slightly brighter but this could just be a color difference not quality. I felt the Chromaflow were softer. When I wanted to retain some definition, the Chromaflow tended to blend it out. Bottom line is that I prefer my Prismas. I did enjoyed using 24 pencils and have been seeing what I can do with 36 Prismas. Fun and interesting experiment.

Yeah, I have been using them here and there. They definitely are not bad, but when I go back to Prisma, I notice those subtle differences that really make Prismas my go-to.

Me too! Especially since, ya know, they're made there lol. Their entire release was just wonky, but hey, I still bought them and so did a bunch of people. So, that's Derwent for ya :)

It’s interesting that Derwent lists the Coloursoft core size at 4, but nowhere lists the core size for the Chromaflow. Either they considered it inconsequential, or they don’t think we need to know. Not sure how I feel about that.

I would say the lead is def smaller than a 4 on Chromaflow. But I agree they're is not a lot of info on them. I mean they just threw them on the market 😆

I think colorists sort of expect a bit more forthcoming info from companies like Derwent, Faber Castell and Caran d’Dache. It would not be surprising from white label outfits.

Thank you for the video. It was interesting. I definitely prefer a softer pencil. So yes Prismacolors are my favorite, and I do have to purchase a good handful of individual pencils from time to time. I'm glad I didn't purchase the Derwent colorsoft, as I really am more of a blender kind of colorist. I know what you're saying thou. Not everything has to be as soft as a Prismacolor, in order for me to use it. 😁

I bought a 24 pack of the Derwent academy colored pencils. Their leads are so fragile and break easily. Done with them. I'm aware they are student grade but they're bad.

Excellent review! I live in The Netherlands and these pencils are also not available here. I also checked Amazon Netherlands and Germany and they are not sold there either. So it seems they skipped the whole European market and not only the UK. Really strange, because Prismacolor pencils are very expensive here. So I really don’t understand why Derwent is selling these in the US, while Prismacolor is the best selling brand in the US! Why should you buy Derwent when you can buy Prismacolor 🤔

Oh wow! That is crazy. I don't know why they released them the way they did period. I just hope they make more so I can figure out if they are worth it. Hopefully they release in UK markets, but it seems there are no plans just yet to do so.

@@ColorfullyOptimistic The test release has only been into USA and India. Nowhere else. They are obviously testing the waters. Interestingly though, Derwent have new management. We will see where that takes them. This attempt and the botch of launch with no information, is not what we expect from a prestigious UK company.

Apparently they are trying to target the US and India with these products first as they feel they need to promote their products more over there, these pencils are pretty much a trial, they’re gonna get feedback from everyone they’ve sent them to and buying customers and if their not well received you may never see them again

They are definitely pricey, but it is shiny and new and with any new product, the price is always higher. I'd like to see what the prices finishes at once they've been out a bit and if they release more.

As far as I'm aware they are still manufactured in England by Derwent, so they will never be able to compete with the prices of pencils that are manufactured in China, Mexico, etc. We'll have to wait and see if the quality matches the price point.
