Great Barn Burner video Frank. Even though I don't air brush my models at this time, I watched all the way to the end. If I may, My preferred method for stripping chrome is by using 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. It works slowly, sometimes up to 48 hours but I find that it removes the yellowish under coating more efficiently than the purple degreaser stuff.

Great video sir. I also use Super Clean it’s great. I’ve found that if you leave parts in it for several days it will also remove the lacquer undercoat as well. When cleaning off small parts like little carburetors, this really shows the detail if you remove the thick lacquer and follow with nice thin layers of undercoats like you have demonstrated. Again, great video

I use rustolium. I don't claim that it's the best. It's far from the best, but it's what I can afford. And if I work at it really hard, and take my time. It comes out pretty good, and when you're 66 years old and your hands shake and you can't see little bitty parts. Pretty good, is really good. It pleases me. And that's who it's about when I build a model car, me . I just discovered your channel a day ago, and i'm really enjoying what I see.

Excellent video, I have my model workshop ( and spray booth ) inside a shared “craft room” with my loving spouse, so I am limited to spraying acrylics ( no shooting lacquer or lacquer thinners ) I am going down the same road ( beginning ) with the Vallejo gloss black primer and their metallic line. I’m sure it won’t be as good as the Revell, but I’ll keep trying. As a foot or I just finished the 1/24 Monogram 1969 Dodge Coronet Super Bee, done entirely with acrylic craft paint and acrylic clear coat. Experimenting with various % levels of Min-Wax Polycryllic as an “additive” to primers and base coats to vastly increase mechanical grip, hardness durability and sandability ( wet sanding & buffing ) so far it’s working great….WITHOUT the lacquer smell…..Mama is HAPPY in our craft rom…..great video very educational, helpful & and informative. 👍😄

You answered a question so I don't have to ask. Sprayed 3d engine with green stuff primed the pieces x1 gloss black then green stuff I'm pleased with it. Now stripped grille and bumper didn't prime x1 then green stuff . Turned out like aluminum in fact flatish. So thanks got another set so prime x1 then green stuff for now. See didn't have to ask.....

Thanks for sharing your technique Frank. I was hopping for a better solution than I'm using right now (brake fluid) for stripping the clear coat after removing the chrome(with bleach) which is a very thin layer.....As you already know the clear coat is actually the thick one covering and sometimes thickening details ( ex. the grille which on most of the cars are chromed....ok, classic cars :D). The method I'm using with brake fluid is veeery slow...I let it soak for a few days but still not efficient enough, I end up scratching the surface with a tooth pick to help the process. Thanks for your time.

I found your suggestions using measurements mixing airbrush paint and thinners being precise, spot on and a big help since I consider myself a beginner in airbrushing. I will visit your other postings on Airbrushing. Aside from building models I always explore other techniques (found on YT) that I can apply in other applications since I also work on restoring real automobiles. Currently I'm refurbishing the plastic dashboard of my 1967 Plymouth which has areas that are chrome plated. I could easily spend hundreds of $$$ having it electroplated yet, to me, it's a waste of money due to the fact there small areas that need chroming and will need to paint it as well. That said, an the end of your video you favor the Revell Chrom spray. Based on your experience using this product, how resilient is the finish? Does the finish "mar" if it is touched especially since my dashboard is on a real car. I could use inexpensive silver paint and forgo the real chrome finish look if the Revell paint won't last but am looking for a more accurate stock appearance. I appreciate your response and will check out your other videos.
@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 3 ай бұрын
Classic car prices being what they are and Chrome paints being what they are, Revell Chrom is resilient enough to withstand the assembly of a model and the limited handling it will receive, but I can’t say for sure if I’d recommend it for a dashboard. Once I wrap up trying to nail down using the Revell Chrom Spray for photoetch, I’m going to continue the series with applying washes to it, painting it, and applying clear coats over it (that hopefully won’t demolish the luster). If you’re not in a rush, I should cover all of that within a month or so. (Just have to find time to do it! lol!)

I tried to decant it and it was messy. It wasted a lot of material, and what I captured wasn’t enough to be usable. At $30 a can (and kinda hard to find), I gave it a quick try and bailed on it. I have a feeling that the nozzle and spray characteristics of Revell Chrom are a big part of the results, but if that’s the case, then it’s likely proprietary information and Revell might not confirm or deny it. While this video was released tonight, I’m currently working on a Revell Chrom specific video. It should be out within the next week.

Greetings from Canada. Great video. Being a Gen X, I like your non namby-pamby style. I guess one could decant the Revell Chrome and shoot through an airbrush for a less thick application? I do not have any of it, but perhaps that could be a topic for another video?

There is a third chroming video coming out…I’m recording the last bits of it today. I tried to decant it, but it created a mess and I wasn’t able to capture enough to try spraying it. At $30 a can, I can only justify so much of wasting it to test a theory…even though it’s a natural theory to try to test. I have a couple more cans on the way (the expense isn’t the worst part…this stuff can be challenging to find as well). I might try to decant again today. I have to check and see if I have a Tyvek suit somewhere around here 😂

@@FranksModelWorks Just saw it posted. When I decant spray paint, I let it sit and do not shake it. I then take a sharp metal tip and tap it, into the top of the can, below the metal cap. This will release the pressure. When all the pressure is gone, I then pour the paint into a glass jar with a lid. I will keep the lid off for a bit to release any further left over bubbles.

Thanks Frank! Now I need to buy Gai chrome.😂 I only have 10 different kinds of chrome. I like the look of Gia. Really looks like polished SS. I just used the Revell last month. I thought it was pretty good, but felt it looked a lot like kit chrome. Maybe I was spraying to heavy. My go to has been green stuff worlds brushable chrome. It airbrushes well and evaporates good revealing details. I’ve talked to multiple people about my brush with Mac valve, and nobody seems to even care about it. I love having air adjustable on brush especially when spraying metal paints. I tried a method I seen on YT, where he used Mr color chrome silver, diluted it 15/1 and shot it over gloss black and it came out beautiful. Me, I might as well have brushed it on, as it didn’t turn out at all. I think my next chrome besides Gia will be Pro Scale from Paul at ISM. It’s very involved to get perfect, but I liked the fact their chrome sealer did not affect the mirror polished look. Man, if I keep going, my comment will be as long as your video.🤣🤣 love watching your channel. Just found you a few weeks back, and I appreciate your witticisms. Keep up the good work!

Hope you're doing better Frank. I'm missing that sense of humor! I have a question about the Gaianotes chrome. Have you tried it over different types of paint? Enamel or lacquer instead of acrylic? I see a difference when shooting it over Tamiya X-1 compared to Scalefinishes.

@@aracellinn5596 thanks! I never noticed a significant difference with GaiaNotes when sprayed either over Tamiya X1, Tamiya LP1 or MrColor GX1. The GaiaNotes Chrome’s luster and depth were almost always a function of spray discipline and the luster of the basecoat. I never sprayed it over enamel…with the exception of MCW engine colors, I haven’t sprayed enamels for a very long time.

@@FranksModelWorks Thanks for your response! What I noticed was that sprayed over the Tamaiya X-1, it appeared much darker, with less reflection. Whereas over the Scalefinishes gloss black, it immediately had that mirror finish. A second coat dulled it slightly. Both basecoats were chromed at the same time, so temp/humidity wouldn't have been a factor. Could be in my technique possibly. Anyway, thanks again. Model on!
