A&P Tech classes is exactly how I became hooked on playing in the puddle and manipulating my welds. Hand eye coordination 101. All of the guys in my welding block were blowing holes in their material and so forth and now I’m so thankful for the information and instruction Mr Moffit provides for TIG just a different source of heat really

Like a lot of this you tube welding videos . It’s easy to weld joists right in front of you ,no other tubes obstructing your view. Beginner’s need to see that so they know sometimes a weld has to be contortionist
@SuperformanceFab
@SuperformanceFab 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah man its best to practice as much as you can so that you become so proficient with it when you get into those out of bench positions welds and have to become a contortionist and it makes it easier to make that weld and you dont even have to think about it. And when you get into those positions nothing else matters but that puddle. I plan on doing a 8.50 cert cage soon and plan on talking about all these points. Thanks for watching and reaching out.

Great video. The only point I would like to mention is that according to Gerry Uttrachi (author of Advanced Automotive Welding (2012) and Weld Like a Pro (2015), Vice President of Esab for 10 years, 2007 President of the American Welding Society (AWS)), the "best" TIG rod for 4130 chromoly that will not be PWHT'd is ER70S-2, not ER80S-D2. Those books I mentioned go into detail as to why.

I highly recommend the PrimeWeld TIG225X ACDC for about $869 and it comes with a CK Worldwide 17F 3 series torch. This machine is freaking awesome which it’s capable of HF Start, Pulse width modulation, 2T/4T function, AC Balance for aluminum that equals a red or blue box costing a $1K or 2k more! Go for it!

Your welds look perfect! I have to weld some 4130 tubing where the fit up is not very good. Do you ever purge the inside of the tube? I realize a small hole would be needed to allow the argon to escape. Also, have to weld some 4130 to 4140 machined parts, I plan on some preheat around 300 degrees, would I still use the ER70S-2 tig wire? thanks

It’s not Lighter, It actually heavier 1x1 take 1 foot sections same wall thickness, its a tad heavier, it stronger so you can use half the thickness over mild steel. It’s more brittle than mild steel

With no previous experience with metal or welding, could someone please tell me if 6061 would be much different than what's used in this video?
@mikehindley3
@mikehindley3 2 жыл бұрын
Very different. 6061 is aluminium, requiring different weld settings (AC), different amps, different filler, and the actual behaviour of the puddle is different, so it requires some practice if you're used to steel. The metal itself has very different strength properties, so you'd need to design your piece differently. Finally, it might also require some post-weld heat treating that a 4130 frame might not. It's a fairly complex area.
@campbellspears3929
@campbellspears3929 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikehindley3 thank you for your reply, I'm not a welder by any stretch of the imagination, I have old mountain bikes made with 6061 & was maybe thinking of making them into something else, but, if it's difficult to do with a stick welder, then I'll need to rethink my plan. Thanks again for your reply.
@mikehindley3
@mikehindley3 2 жыл бұрын
@@campbellspears3929 definitely hard to do with a stick welder, especially or a beginner. If you want to make some cool artwork (with holes in) then give it a try. For anything remotely structural or weight-bearing, I'd avoid! This video features TIG welding, which is a different process to stick, and it's hard in different ways (and more expensive).

Don't mean to knock the video but this was an average video at best. The welder doesn't know to use the right terminology when explaining material behaviour of chromoly, the term he is looking for when describing how the tacks will crack is "brittleness" and reduced "ductility". The welds are fine but I find that he contradicts himself when he first explains how Chromoly needs lots of shielding gas then fails to let the post-flow shield the weld when it is still glowing red (7:20 mark). Key takeaways from the video would be mainly to keep heat input low and to use the right filler metals. Any welder would know not to directly quench the weld when it's still hot, and if you don't you really shouldn't be working on Chromoly tubing.
