To overcome any chronic health challenge, you must understand a bit of brain science! What we focus on expands! And sadly, so many of us who aren’t well and trying so hard to heal tend to focus on our symptoms and all that is wrong, and without knowing, this exact thing is the very thing that keeps us from healing.
This was my story for years! I struggled for so long and wanted so badly to heal, and I had no idea that by focusing on my symptoms I was preventing them from going away.
Here’s the deal: most chronic symptoms have a mind and nervous system component. I believe every symptom has a mind and nervous system component because you cannot separate the mind from the body. And every time we focus on a symptom and experience the subsequent feelings of frustration, despair, and brokenness, we create more of the same. Nothing fuels symptoms more than focusing on them because the brain and body perceive this focus and vigilance as a THREAT, and whatever increases threat physiology increases symptomology! READ THAT AGAIN! AND AGAIN!
Focus (and fear) is the number one fuel for chronic health issues. And when all we do is think about our symptoms and how unwell we are and how much we wish we were better, the brain says, ‘Wow, this must be a massive problem (threat) if all this person does is spend their energy dwelling here,’ which causes the body further stress and dysregulation.
Now, I’m certainly not telling you to put a smile on your face and ignore the fact that you’re suffering because that (repression) will also keep you sick and stuck! I’m encouraging you to find the balance between acknowledging the frustration and understanding that every time you focus on your symptoms and obsess about them, you’re feeding them.
For me, this looked like taking a little time every day to express how I felt. If there was frustration and despair, I expressed it because what we repress, the body expresses. Then, I stopped focusing on everything that was wrong, understanding that was the exact fuel for my chronic health issues, and started focusing on what was right in my life. When we practice gratitude, our body releases a healing chemical cocktail. Gratitude and less fear + focus are also what allows the body to feel safe: the number one prerequisite for all healing. THIS shifted everything for me! ✨✨✨✨
Sadly, many of you will skim over this and not understand that if YOU were to APPLY THIS, you would heal. ALL chronic health issues are caused by or made worse by nervous system dysregulation and the fuel for nervous system dysregulation is fear and hyperfocus. I've never seen anyone heal from chronic health challenges without addressing fear and focus! What we focus on expands, and what you focus on is 100% up to you!
