I grew up fascinated by Castles, Medieval lore, etc... So when I got to go to the Tower of London, Westminster Abby, Windsor and St George's I could really appreciate it. My wife did not and just thought it was cool, nut just old buildings of note.

What a spectacular Castle, I am sitting here imagining myself roaming the halls & corridors & hidden spaces within & talking to what ever ghosts remain lol Its stunning. I cannot imagine the financial costs of keeping this Castle alive. The Long Drawing Room, The wooden arches in the wood work match the stone arches in the doorway opposite the Pew I hope I spelt that right. They managed to blend these features well & doesn't look out of place, mind you I don't have much knowledge on British castles except to identify one. I will continue to watch now cause these rooms are absolutely breathtaking. What a privilege to be able to se these ancient dwellings lovingly care for to maintain their history. Thank you so MUCH fo0r taking us on this tour with you. I feel privileged to be a witness to its longevity & beauty.

They used to employ ship builders, not only in England, Scotland, Ireland but also in France to build these castles, chateaus, and mansions roofs. That is why the ceilings in the great halls look like upsidedown ships and if you could see in the attics of the other home it would pretty much be the same only maybe on a smaller scale in some spots. Beautiful and very sturdy.

Living in that way is completely different than how she was raised in the US, the British caste system (royal) is something we fought to get rid of, these ppl still living in luxury from this system is just wrong, and I'm the most non-communist there is

@@shable1436 Almost all of them don't live in that much luxury anymore. These houses are beautiful, large, but therefore infamously hard to keep in tip top shape, and families don't have the wealth they did back in the day to upkeep them. Living in them is not all that luxurious when you can't pay for staff to run the house and pamper you, and indeed when families have to do most of the daily chores and maintenance themselves. Most owners that have been handed down these houses aren't living as they did in the past, despite looking like they're living posh via clothing and cars and speaking refined-like, and they're actually working hard enough to keep them preserved and in the family. Most of these houses are museums, venues, used in movies; all to turn the house itself into a revenue stream to primarily finance its maintenance and preservation of history. A lot of these houses have had different owners over the years as well. A lot of them are now in a trust, or they've gone to modern wealthy individuals.

My forebears built the first proper homestead homestead in Australia, "The Vinyard" Charles Darwin came to stay on his famous voyage...but the family lost it's wealth with the collapse of the first Australian bank, and all I have left is the silver cutlery set!

Hello from Kentucky, USA. I have loved this type of history since I was in grade school. I was the nerdy kid who loved to go to the library and read the encyclopedia and any history book I could. I want to thank the Berkeley Family for allowing us to visit and get just a taste of their history. The castle is spectacular. This is something from a little girl’s dreams. This means the world to me!!! I did live in West Virginia and went to part of Shepherd College in Berkeley County. I’m sure this was named after a descendant of the owners of Berkeley Castle. I absolutely understand! I have always had a feeling that I grew up in an English castle in a former life and when I traveled to London many years ago, I felt as if I was home. Books, movies and tv shows as well as You Tube have allowed me to continue my obsession. I, too, used to read the encyclopedia, pestered my Mom to take me to the library and convinced the librarian to let me take out more books that the limit allowed. I’m 65 now and will never lose my love of learning and books!

King Edward II of England met a grim and controversial end after being deposed in 1327. His reign had been marked by political strife, military failures, and controversial relationships with favourites like Piers Gaveston and the Despensers, which alienated the nobility and led to repeated conflicts. His wife, Isabella of France, and her ally Roger Mortimer led a rebellion against him in 1326, resulting in his abdication in favour of his son, Edward III. Edward was imprisoned at Berkeley Castle, where, according to popular accounts, he was murdered in September 1327. The most infamous version of his death claims he was killed with a red-hot poker inserted into his body, a story likely propagated to scandalise his memory and reflect his supposed vices. However, modern historians debate the veracity of this account. Some evidence suggests he may have been quietly executed or even escaped captivity, with rumours circulating that he lived out his days in exile, possibly in Italy. The true circumstances of Edward II's death remain a mystery, as contemporary accounts are contradictory and influenced by political biases. His fall and demise illustrate the volatile nature of medieval kingship and the personal as well as political challenges that shaped his reign.

I could do so much with that walled garden. Trees on the sunny wall, stone arched greenhouses all around the rest, that building in the middle (but moved over a bit), a bench along the tree side of the building, berry bushes on the sunny side of the building, trellises, arches, pathways, seats, walipini greenhouses dug 5 ft into the ground...so much fun. To be honest I'd build so many gardens everywhere on that estate 😍

People who are interested in history, the Middle Ages, etc. would not be able to lead a normal day-to-day life in England, Scotland, Wales, etc. You would just drive from castle to castle and experience history. Just the stories that the countless paintings of the former rulers show... France is already way ahead with its stories of its castles and the Middle Ages. But England, Scotland, Wales are a little further ahead.

If you ever wondered what happened to all those thousands of ships that the Royal Navy retired, once they were past their use on the seas: just look at the construction of historic buildings. The ship breakers were extremely profitable businesses for their owners. The oak and elm used in ship construction would be a valuable resource, durable and hidden away inside homes, farms and a wide variety of structures. Hundreds of years later they're still as strong as ever... If the ants and termites didn't get a foothold.

My family is from a small village right by the castle, and although I live in the US now, I fly back over to visit very often. After seeing it looming in the distance so many times, I finally toured the castle just before covid and it was incredible. As great as the castle is, I actually think my favorite part was the little garden chapel! There is also a roman villa being excavated nearby that you can tour!

There are so many wonderful features here. Among my favorites are the vaulted ceilings, which are recycled oak from ancient ship hulls. This is a particularly grand castle. I loved the visit with the Lady of the House.

Your videos are great. The views of the rooms are awesome. Of course, as an American I'm awed by anything older than 1620! There are only a few things left from the Mayflower. Was it hard to learn to drive on the left side of the road? But I did have an ancestor who lived in Stratford-on-Avon in 1550. Maybe he saw Shakespeare! I love history.
