In the USA the Federal government maintained a hospital at United States Public Health Service Hospital at Carlville, Louisiana. The National Hansen’s Disease Hospital and Museum are located in Carville. The hospital and it’s patients created a community separate from the “outer world.” There is a great history of the disease and treatment are easily Googled and worth a good read.

Also, the island of Molokai in Hawaii was a leper colony well into the 20th century.

Right you are! When I was a teenager I checked a book out of our local library (reading was the main source of my entertainment and vicarious travel) entitled "Miracle at Carville", by Betty Martin. Highly recommend this book!

The national guard runs a GED program at the base in Carville where the leper colony is. I got my GED there in 2015 and they still housed people with Hansens disease when I was there

Imagine growing up in a time when you remembered reading about something but couldn't just Google it for a reference, lol. The olden days.

I love these programs and would have loved to be a part of the people digging up the history! As an aside, leprosy, aka Hansen's Disease, is now a treatable disease, if caught in the early stages, but rare today.

I really am amazed at what you can find deep in the ground people just build on top of something that was there before and new people come and do the same exact thing I’m also amazed at in some place’s they dig they find actual tile floor’s and other sign’s of a house or Roman Spa it’s so fascinating ‼️ I also am amazed and fascinated by Egypt and the burial tombs they find in all of these situation’s I try and picture the people who did everything that they find and what they were like I just love all of this history stuff‼️💯👍🏻😳😳🤔

I have seen many of these episodes and wonder why they don't check the 3 day weather forecast before they begin. So many have been rained out on the second or third day. I would like to have seen the third day of digging. Otherwise, a great educational experience.

part of it is that it's inevitable since the UK has a lot of rain, part of it is that the actual days are decided a while in advance, to get permits, research and just schedules in order. so they don't get to know the weather much in advance and have to make do.

does geophysical use GPS to mark where they are? If so does the Earth's wobbling from major earthquakes or volcanoes affect the GPS readings?
