Most people regard the Vikings as violent robbers, but they were much more than their reputation suggests. In the first episode of this series, we take a look at the origins of the Viking people, the major events that shaped the civilisation and what daily life was like as a Viking in this early period.
This landmark, high-end drama-doc tells the story of why Vikings chose to leave Denmark. With the help of dramatic re-creations and CGI, leading academics examine the life and legacy of the Viking Age, and find out why they were forced to leave Scandinavia.
Welcome to Chronicle; your home for all things medieval history! With documentaries covering everything from the collapse of the Roman Empire to the beginnings of the Renaissance, from Hastings to Charlemagne, we'll be exploring everything the Middle Ages have to offer.

I'm definitely going to do a video about Rollo one day - one of the most consequential individuals of the early Medieval period.

Loved this, do you have anything for Italy from 500-1500 CE? This is my favorite area of history but there is so little for these topics. For some reason we only get Ancient Rome or the Renaissance....that's so sad.

Yes, it began with the volcanic eruptions resulting in climatic instability. Which in turn destroyed the delicate balance of agriculture and social institutions.

The Vikings eventually reached the East coast of Canada (Labrador and Newfoundland). Unfortunately, some of the Native American tribes brutally attacked the Vikings and any remaining Vikings fled Canada. You can still see some of their very early settlements. It's very interesting.

Unfortunately? Not for the Native American. There's no reason to think the Vikings would have treated the natives any better than they did the English monks, they where there to take whatever they could, including land.

Sad they used what looks like extras from the show "Vikings" as opposed to accurate representations of real norse people. There's scores of reenactors out there that would love to participate in something like this

If your starving to death after volcanic activities, why would raiding monasteries for gold be a priority. Why would men not take their families with them and why once they found out the other parts of Northern Europe were subject to the same plight did they continue raiding?

I love Chronicle, but you obviously don’t care about people with impaired vision to not have over-dubbing for the non English speakers….. which is a lot!
@SN-sz7kw

This makes no sense - to not have over-dubbing for non-English speakers? And have you noticed someone does all this work for you, for which you pay exactly nothing? Instead of insulting them how about directly & politely making a direct suggestion? Which they may or may not be able to consider - because they have lives, & again, provide this at no cost to you.

@@SN-sz7kw The comment was about visually impaired people, not people who speak only English. Even if the comment had been about people who only speak English, would viewers be expected to know Swedish, Norwegian or some other languages. This site is aimed at an English speaking audience, so voice over doesn't seem to outlandish.

What I like about this video is that it can be enjoyed by non-English speakers as well. Norwegian, French and English historians are all summarizing basically the life of Vikings. Interesting.

SN, how about you get off your high horse and look up the word insult? Just asking a question is not insulting their work; in fact, I started off by stating how much I enjoyed it. Just think about it, if a person is visually impaired, closed captioning is not helpful, and sometimes Chronicle has quite a bit of non-English speakers telling important parts of the story. Of course the people making these videos have lives, which seemingly you do not, and in order to provide better programming and hopefully more income, they need to know some of the limitations and problems people encounter.

@@geraldhimmelspach1154 That’s probably true, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that they behaved very savagely and cruelly. The people they killed were also just trying to feed their families and survive the harsh conditions too. It was the common lot. Nothing gives anyone the right to kill, rob, kidnap and viciously attack others. Again, I love tales of the Vikings, but don’t try to make them what they were not.

They didn't do anything different that any other culture at the time were doing. Just that the Norse had ships to sail to different places and they were pagan but if u research any Dark Age culture at that time they were all savage and brutal.
