Have a 2018 and yeah, it's awesome. Few quirks like the fuel filler being hard to use (you can't see in so easy to overfill, but you get used to it), not a fan of the tablet 'dash' (swapped it out for a Garmin Zumo XT) and a couple other minor things, but I haven't met a bike yet that didn't have its own minor quirks. Ultimately I love it, it's the perfect bike for everything in Australia; scratching pegs in the Adelaide hills, cruising on the highways and exploring the back roads and tracks. I have a KTM1190 ADV R which I love as well and definitely miss the power when on the PR7, but when it comes to picking the bike up in a sandy gully, the PR7 redeems itself quickly!

What doesn't help is their lack of an official online presence and model lineup information. I was looking to buy a PR4 a few years back and simply gave up because trying to research their bikes was painful. I understand they're a small company but it wouldn't take much to be consistent online giving customers confidence in who AJP are. Being the underdog is cool but if we don't understand who you are then it won't work.

Early adopter here - it's my unicorn 😂 First of all, this is a proven, stone-axe simple and reliable engine with plenty of parts availability - its real genius is what BMW added to the OEM Husky lump - a balance shaft giving an incredibly smooth engine for a thumper! Ok, everything's a compromise and a 660 twin like my Tuareg (yes apparently I like exotic yet its actually a preference for the best), will run better on the slab at speed - but not by much.. The PR7 is very smooth, torquey and waay lighter with even better weight distribution - tanks under the seat.. off road it's fantastic, suspension, ground clearance, brakes - all top class. Dealers? Pfft, these are easy to work on (by you or your favourite local mechanic - no crazy electronics needing OEM training and tools), parts are readily available and in any event my experience with both the NSW dealer, Harry's motorcycles, and the Oz importer has been Rolls Royce - they're keen to ensure a smooth relationship. As is the factory - check out the handmade passion on various utubes.. I'm stoked with this bike and have no regrets 🎉 If others have worries getting in the way - that's their loss - c'est la vie.. 😊

I had a 2011 TE-630 since new until 2014, put 15k miles on it in the USA…….I should have never sold it! Never had an issue with the bike aside from people telling me I should have been on a 690. Back then the TE-630 had a counter balanced motor and was sooooo much smoother than a 690 in addition to a great running bike straight out of the box, no fumbling with ECU or pipes or suspension. It worked and took me on a great number of adventures. I loved that bike…..great memories. The only lacking issue was as you mentioned, the much smaller availability of accessories. Since then, I’ve looked at the AJP a couple years now, looks great, might give it a go. Thanks for doing a video on this bike.🖖

Yet if KTM would have come up with PR7, people would buy it more... Solid, great video!

Two of our crew have a PR7, both love them. Coming across as a ‘big dirt bike’ they just work. Your video covers the point very well and the more I see the two here in action the more I like them. They certainly hit the sweet point of suspension, weight, fuel capacity and the compromise between comfort and performance. There are videos of factory tours, worth a watch. A small passionate team make them. Quality focused. Some may be surprised at the grass roots manufacturing employed. Hand made components. No robots. Rudimentary batch production. Certainly not a sophisticated large manufacturing plant. See if you can get a ride on one Solid, very different but certainly not ‘wrong’ either. I agree totally that if a Japanese manufacturer copied the base formula they would have an instant winner in the eyes of adventure riders.

So far, mine is THE Unicorn. It has a few quirks. It is not a bike for owners who take their bike to a dealer for an oil changes and other regular maintenance. It is perfect for the rider who does their own maintenance. It is perfect for the rider that does not want ABS, rider modes, or other unnecessary BS. Mine cost slightly less than a new 690/701 in the US. It lacks the extra technology of that bike, but that is a positive for me. The included tablet and DMD2 is a gimmick I am still learning to use. I would have purchased the bike without it. The engine has a long history of reliability with basic maintenance and has more than enough power. The suspension is good spec and adjustable, the seat is comfortable, the wind protection is adequate. So far, so good. If this bike remains reliable, I will ride it for many years.

I think the real hidden unicorn is the SWM Superdual which is the poorer cousin of the AJP. They share the same smooth and robust engine and transmission, have a larger fuel tank, Brembo brakes and much more, and used to retail for around half the price of the AJP. I have owned the the Superdual since 2018 and absolutely love it, however because of the Oz market resistance against small manufacturers, the sales have not been great enough to keep the importer and factory interested. Sometimes we just shoot ourselves in the foot!

Their new 790/890/1290 bikes are ugly, have insane and unnecessary electronics, and can have serious reliability issues. This AJP P7 is a beautiful example of what a dirt bike/adventure bike should look like, and should weigh for those of us enjoying both paved and off-road riding adventures. Great video, thank you for sharing!

Thanks for a good and fair review. Here's a view from Englandland. I did consider buying one a couple of years back...in spite of the origin of the engine (worst motorcycle decision I ever made was to get rid of a DR350S and buy a Husky TE610E). We have an AJP dealer locally. He had 2 PR7s; one with the power kit, and one standard. Neither of them would start. They both made the same noise as when my old 610 wouldn't start (which it wouldn't most of the time). Needless to say, I got a GasGas ES700 instead (good price end of year deal). Getting the ES7 up to PR7 spec (ie rack, bars, fairing) would put the prices about on par, but I think I got the better deal, probably.
@lindsaypetersen12778 ай бұрын
The price for the PR7 is $20k plus on road plus dealer charges so that puts it at $21k add on the power up kit which you need will have it at just over $22.3k on the road in NSW. That is a hard ask for anyone taking the plunge into the totally unknown for them. I am the owner of the 2nd one in Australia and went through all the hard work with a handful of others sorting the bike for the AJP factory. To their credit there were very helpful in helping get it right for us. What the PR7 is today is only because of a handful of owners here on the east coast of Aus who persevered with it knowing it was a great thing but lacked some components suitable for Aussie terrain. Unfortunately this bike will remain in the doldrums until someone with vision, drive and ability take the reigns and show Australia what it really is about and capable of doing.

The bike doesn’t come with a street ready registration here in the US. Unless you live in one of the few states that lets you take a dirt bike and convert it into a dual sport, and you go to your local state troopers office to acquire an official street legal registration for it, you won’t be able to register it to be street legal. And that’s why there aren’t very many of them sold here.

Great video and discussion! No question this is an interesting bike. I was taking a serious look at this in 2022 when the current dealer was importing into Australia. What stopped me was that the bike is sold as an off-road bike with no ABS and only set up for one person was going to be a bit inconvenient too. I know what's coming next - "you don't need ABS if you know how to brake" but on knobby tyres, on wet pavement, in an emergency, most of us will pull that front brake lever too hard. I got a KTM690 instead and I am very happy with it. But (in Australia at least) by the time you option it with what the PR7 comes with as standard, you definitely spend a lot more.

just to be clear, Sachs is pronounced "sacks" not "sachets" sorry to be a pedant but you should know Sachs are a company with a lot of history. The PR7 doesnt actually fit most Rally criteria in most countries either, so it isnt a rally bike as such. the seat height can put some people off, and the big one for me was it is a solo only bike, rear pegs a better seat set up and stronger rear subframe would make it a more adventure friendly bike, but the small company didnt have the money to meet the ABS criteria of passenger carrying bikes in Europe. TBC, it is a fantastic solo ADV bike with far better off road performance than anything else i have ridden. although high, the tank design keep the centre of gravity low, air box means deep river crossings are a breeze and the SWM built engine, which has a much bigger sump capacity than the original Husky engine, and is a pretty reliable lump. build quality is sublime too. they are all hand built, not from a production line, and the company have passion for what they do

I would definitely take the leap. And I believe lots of other Americans would as well. The biggest problem is that it doesn’t come from the manufacturer ready to register as a street legal motorcycle. In some states, we can jump through a few hoops, and convert it to a street legal dual sport motorcycle, and acquire a street registration for it, but it’s not that easy of a process, and some states are so strict, if the motorcycle doesn’t come registered for the street from the manufacturer, it’s impossible to get a street registration for it.

I would definitely consider one of these as a lighter replacement to my Tenere 700. On the subject of unknown British lightweight adventure bikes the CCM GP450 Adventure was way ahead of it's time and doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Thanks for the review. I appreciate your perspective and find your information both reliable and really useful. I really like the PR7, but found a well appointed, used, 690 Enduro for lots less. For my purposes, should I buy new, the discount on the KTM 790 Adventure makes the PR7 a very hard sell (for my uses, not everyone's, just mine; I'm in the USA, so that impacts price comparisons, too).
@lachy17098 ай бұрын
Interesting point about the price. I feel like its a common occurrence that people will point out that one bike is so much more expensive than another, yet when you then look at things like crash bars, bark busters, slid plates, LED lights, it turns out the more expensive one has those items stock and by the time they're considered the price of the two bikes are equal.
@biscuitsalive8 ай бұрын
I’ve nearly bought one twice over the last couple of years. But both times they just were asking too much for it. They don’t pop up for sale used often so I can see why they hold price. But it’s still used, so should t sell for nearly new price. In terms of issues. I’ve mainly heard cold start can be tricky, but not much else. Small niggles mainly. Seat height is a bit tall for my 5,8” height. But still keeping my eyes open for a used one at a good £.

This has HUGE potential in the USA market place I promise.

Problem is that PR7 isn't EPA approved and not 50-state legal in the US. And many wouldn't touch it because there's no dealer nearby, just like with Tuareg vs T7. One is a Yamaha, another is a better bike. Guess which sells?
@chroniclesofsolid8 ай бұрын
Great point there mate. I had forgot it’s only euro 5.
@cyclopathic9988 ай бұрын
@@chroniclesofsolid in US to sell the bike you need to get DOT and EPA certifications. DOT requires optics certification, blinky position, kickstand/clutch starter block, etc etc. EPA emissions are less restrictive than Euro5, but they require 9000mi durability test, which cost $$$$$ and AJP made a decision not to go for it. As is I can drive 500mi and buy one, but you can't plate it in my state and half of the country. Good bike though I set on one in EU
@ozadv8 ай бұрын
Yes, in Oz it's all state legal as a road registrable 'enduro' - so doesn't need ABS or pillion pegs etc.

I have a 2021 one, it has the Athena ECU, closed cartridge forks already. But I had to import it from the neighboring country so no dealership support. Luckily the bike is simple: valve clearances can be checked without removing the engine. Most of the consumable parts (brake pads, oil filters, chain, sprockets) can be found locally, but other gaskets, filters, etc may require internet searching, ordering. I really like it off-road, I think AJP knows what is required for off-road: good suspension, good torque values early in the rpm, linear power delivery, rim locks from the factory.
@888jimmy8 ай бұрын
Nice one Solid. My prob with the AJP, and like you say, there is not enough dealer coverage in Aus. That and suspect difficulty in sourcing after market parts.

I had a husky te 630. They actually had a wider ratio gearbox than the re modled swm remake. I absolutely loved that engine it was super smooth. Powerful enough and the gear ratios were perfect IMO. I reckon id really like a ajp. I have heard one rider mention that when bhe is fully loaded with gear the front end becomes very light given the fuel ⛽ s under the seat. Id be keen to know how the aluminium frame holds up to carrying gear. That was certainly a weakness on the te husky.

This would be my unicorn. It has everything I could ask for in a bike. The only 2 things that would stop me from buying it are the price (I could buy and build out a new DR650 or SWM RE500 for less than the price of a PR7), and the lack of a larger dealer network. I'm in Mississippi, and the nearest dealer for me is 750 miles away, in Ohio. If the price was under $10k, I think I would buy it regardless of the lack of dealer network.
@bjornokant40758 ай бұрын
My two cents about the AJP PR7. I acually tried buying one back when i was looking for my second bike, figured this could probably work for two bikes. . No dealers had it, and the used marked was zero. Now there is one dealer that has it, but its priced too high to be a big seller, rough translation to euros here. For example, AJP PR7, 15000Euros, T7 extreme 13000, Husqvarna 701 13000. And i think thats stopping a lot of people, even if they will bolt on stuff for 2000 euros after that.. Would love to be an early adopter (even contemplated buying a new onefor once) but the price is high when you compare it to a risky purchase..

Hey solid, got a couple video ideas for your: how about making a video remembering the CCM450? And second (maybe could be rolled in with the CCM450), how about a shiny foil hat video estimating the possible weight range of a modern 400cc dual sport, if a manufacturer dare make one? A starting point could be the weight of the KLX300 and then adding: 1) the difference between the weight of the new ktm 390 engine (39kgs) and the klx300 engine (i think maybe 8 or 9kgs lighter?), 2) additional weight of stronger drivetrain components, 3)additional fuel due to lower efficiency, etc,. Would take some research but I'd be curious what you'd come up with. I'm guessing it would realistically be maybe 15kgs heavier than the klx wet, so around 150kgs (which would be just 5kgs more than the wet weight of the CCM450, but without needing the space aged aluminum frame, bespoke components, etc, but that number might be closer if you compare the 2 bikes on a "per range" basis).

I have 2022 and I like it very much, but I have a few criticisms. The windscreen buffets, it's way better at high speed with it just removed but looks hideous. The tower breaks the wind nicely without the buffeting. The pegs are a bit high, mostly noticeable when you stand up. Finally, it seems a bit heavier offroad than the 364lbs. The motor is quite strong and has broad torque and does roadwork really good and the weight seems to be a benefit there, just wear earplugs. Offroad however it becomes a handful if you push hard into stuff. A 25lb diet would help. If you want an adventure-touring bike though, I'd say it's pretty awesome. As long as you are on a road of some kind that isn't ridiculously wooped out it's great.
@yorkchris108 ай бұрын
CCM also uses this motor. They eventually abandonned the Suzuki DR650 motor. Shineray, SWM's parent, makes an air-cooled 650. I'm guessing the next motor will be Chinese developed. BSA seems to make a compilant Rotax 650 as well as Chinese Voge. It would help to have some continuit y with the engine.

I was recently told by KTM that I should not be concerned with the management of KTM just buy what they have on offer. My bike budget is limited therefore I will continue to do the relevant research and buy second hand. I told that to KTM and was told that it was personal choice. All love. Stroppy William.

I do like this bike, especially the weight and the ease of access to air filter, etc and also the inclusion of a tablet. I think the dealership situation is a deal breaker for me.
@ozadv8 ай бұрын
Why? Genuine question as I don't understand - after you buy it and maybe the first service I don't care if I don't see the dealer ever again !?! Factory is passionate and their support is bordering on legendary. There's also a great community online, it's a known reliable engine, parts are readily available and can be worked on by you or any competent mechanic - there's no complicated electronics requiring OEM access..

I've put about 6000km on the MY23, and it's 'almost' my unicorn - fantastic for multi-day trips, had great fun at the Bosnia Rally, quite a bit of TET in France ... BUT: the suspension doesn't quite suck, but it's at most 'so-so'. I'll be replacing the Sachs with Ohlins, then that should be sorted. The other niggle is the power-delivery: fantastic for cross-country touring and TET, rubbish for tricky terrain: it's near impossible to lift the front-wheel up onto/over anything (yes, it's not just me being stupid, I've had pro-level riders try, and with the basic setup (i.e. .not the power-kit), it's just not snappy enough to get the front up and over things.)

Why can Ajp offer a bike that ticks alot of boxes but the major brands can't or havnt.. sounds like marketing chess to me 🤔 This bike proves it can be done ( light weight adv class )
@zefautino8 ай бұрын
I can answer that. Big brands have a board meeting to decide what to to do, then the lawyers say what can't be done, than the accounting department tells them how it will be done, and finally the engineers have to build something within all the legal, financial and manufacturing constraints. AJP has one man to decide what's going to happen, and he builds what he wants to ride. He is a rider, not just a businessman.

another reason is that Japan is risk averse these days. They make mods to their twin cylinder road bikes and call it the magic “adventure” and you have a best seller.

Big tick now I have a dealer around the corner. Major concern is parts availability as this is crap even with main stream bikes. Other main concern is resale value. Is it better to buy a CRF450rl or Gas gas ES700 for around 15g and spend the 5g getting it to unicorn spec like the Pr7

Don’t know where you got you pricing from but the 690/701/700 are 20 grand, OZ. AJP stands for António e Jorge Pinto, the brothers who founded the company. The company has been struggling since the beginning, and is alive because António is a stubborn man who loves what he does. They have a tiny factory and nowhere near the production or promotion capacity the Chinese have. In Portugal the brand has a good reputation, and that's saying a lot, Portuguese people like to shit on what's Portuguese made by someone else, but there's not that many on the roads. Regarding the price, yes, they are kind of on the not cheap side, even in the domestic market where shipping is not a so big of a factor. Obviously parts will not be a problem, you just call the factory and they'll ship the parts you need. Unicorn? No. Definatly not. Too expensive, if I'm not mistaken, that engine is still from the Cagiva days...
