Good stuff brother. Not a fan of using an impact on the oil valves. But concise, and well explained. The community needs more videos on this. Sick and tired of the lifters and rockers is all you need mentality. I had to replace the entire chain drive, one phaser, two cams, and I replaced all 4 oil control valves on my Ram C/V. Has 140k on the clock. I had the tick, but also had a wicked cold start rattle. Main culprit was a tensioner, but I did have a wonky phaser on its last leg.

Great video! What are the procedures in applying gasket sealer?

I have a broken tensioner at 10k. Do you absolutely have to replace the oil pump chain and main chains? Can I just change teh timing chains? Dreading having to drop the pan.

I have a question.. Why would the oil pump gear be larger as in more teeth and longer chain than the stock OEM one? This is a 2019 Jeep Cherokee 3.6L..
@Cloyes012 ай бұрын
The sprocket and chain should match the OEM. What timing kit did you purchase? Is it a 3.2L engine, or 3.6L? We only show the 3.2L engine as an option in 2019.
@BanksRacing112 ай бұрын
@@Cloyes01My local parts guy here said the same thing.. He also said they didn't make a 3.6 Jeep Cherokee in 2019 but we have one and we've double checked triple checked actually..

Last night it hit me to check the idler sprocket size and it's also bigger so that should make up for the difference in the oil pump sprocket size.. I went ahead and used it hopefully it works out lol.. Fun job I know that 😂..

We have a 2012 T&C with 149300 miles (240275km) on it, had it since around 80k miles, not knowing what the previous owner did, we do mostly red lights, stop signs, pedestrian crossings and drop off and pick-ups at school + work, but also many road trips, when is it recommended to do this replacement on this engine to prevent future catastrophic failure? I do all maintenance myself as a hobby mechanic, oil and filter change every 5-7k miles using castrol 5w-30 fully synthetic oil and WIX oil filter. Other parts based on sounds or scheduled maintenance like spark plugs, fluids, normal wear and tear parts etc, you know, just a regular car guy who know how stuff works, want it to last as long as possible, and don't want to pay someone to do it for me. The engine sounds and run great at ~150k miles, will i hear any sounds when it's time, like chain rattling, or should i follow a scheduled maintenance based on miles ? I heard someone say between 150k and 200k miles on this engine on a forum. I don't want to do it unless it's necessary, and I've heard people get 500k and even 600k miles before the plastic chain guides failed and they got catastrophic failure. Thanks for the video, I'll probably watch it 65 more times when it's time for me to do this job, lol.

I don’t think there’s a set time to change these. I think most of us end up having to do it when we have rocker arms go bad or chain noise on cold starts. I had to replace all my cams from bad rockers and I marked the chains when I took them off and on and I ended up with timing issues after so now I’m doing chains and tensioners. My t&c is around 156k
@lynxstarautomotive208Ай бұрын
@@kmilli0313The chains on these stretch. And the phasers are also known for cold start rattle. The tick, and cold start rattle are two different issues/symptoms.

Can I change the timing chain without removing phasers and having a cam locking tool? I have it at tdc right now but haven't removed the chain because I don't want the cams to jump of timing but it seems they stayed in place in your video??
@Cloyes014 ай бұрын
You will need to remove the exhaust phasers on each bank to replace the chains. The intake phasers can be left on. The cams may move some when the chains are removed, but not if you have the cam locking tools installed.
@jamesmoseley80124 ай бұрын
@@Cloyes01 understood, but what's the use of the cam holders if both exhaust phasers have to be removed to do the timing chain? Nothing to hold onto if it's just one cam left on each bank. These are genuine questions and I really appreciate you taking the time to respond!
@jamesmoseley80124 ай бұрын
@@Cloyes01 for example, this guy doesn't remove the phasers but does have the cam locks installed, what's the difference of how you done it and how he does it? Got my timing chains on everything was aligned perfectly, I spun engine a few times by hand, everything is still in time but the chain marks on cams and crank are now off. What's my issue??
@Cloyes014 ай бұрын
The chain marks will only align during the installation. That reference is lost once you start rotating. The chain marks will eventually realign, but it may take hundreds of rotations to achieve it.

DO I HAVE TO REMOVE THE OIL PAN TO DO ALL THE CHAINS
@Cloyes016 ай бұрын
Yes.
@peytonhall138 ай бұрын
Without the special tools to hold the camshafts in place, do I have to worry about damaging valves once chain tension is released?
@Cloyes018 ай бұрын
No, when you pull the chain off the cams may move a little bit, but only in a direction that will close the valves. Valve spring pressures are too high to allow a valve to open without manual rotation of the cams.
