Thank you for actually running this siren at full rpm. I’ve read one of your comments saying you currently have issues getting it started. If you ask this KZbin channel, @Nicks Garage, he’ll tell you all about Hemi engines. If you want to or if you’re able to, every summer there’s a siren event called “Siren Con”. You can bring this siren there if you resolve the starting issues because there’s one guy who recently restored a gas engined B&N Mobil Directo that’s going to the event. His KZbin channel is @Jerry Wick. He documented the whole restoration. It would be awesome to see both yours and his at Siren Con

It's always neat seeing a classic Hemi being chauffeured by its great great (etc.) grandchild (the Hemi Ram), but this is possibly the coolest pairing I've seen. Incredible piece of not only Mopar history, but also US history that not a lot of people these days know about. Pretty darn cool!

The only other one I knew of in Pittsburgh was one on Carrick High School. I had never seen or heard it. The one I have from my school, as you can see, was high above the city and surrounding area, great coverage. I would imagine that Pittsburgh being an important target would have had more. Detroit. MI. had about six or seven. Some friends of mine got some of them. I also collect steam whistles and a friend of mine in Weirton did also. His name was Pete Warzynski. Check out my you tube whistle postings. They have a beautiful old sound.

Have you heard of one of the LA sirens being heard on Catalina island? Because one mounted on a small 1800 foot mountain at the Cerro negro lookout could be heard on the island 59 miles from it's position.
@harrybarry22912 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Being 1800 feet high and over water, that is ideal conditions for sound travel.

You are very welcome. Presently, I think it has a timing problem and will not run. I don't think it is too serious. Were these things ever used for tornado warnings in the Midwest? I bet they were!
@harrybarry22912 жыл бұрын
They could have been. After the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Cold War was over, some fire Departments got a few. Overkill, unreal power.
@neohistoryfan10142 жыл бұрын
@@harrybarry2291 I knew it! Most cities use the alert signal (a 3 to 5 minute continuous blast) for tornado warnings/natural disasters. In a city with these, there were only a few of them unlike today’s systems, which need 30 or more siren units. There was a World War 2 variant in Akron, on the city hall building, which was removed at the end of WW2. Akron never had a civil defense siren network during the Cold War. Barberton still has a 1st generation Federal Thunderbolt 1000!! They only went off for tests or weather warnings. My dad and his brothers grew up in Akron during the Cold War and actually experienced the Cuban missile crisis!! They were taught about civil defense and what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. If Akron ever received a warning, the civil defense Director would order the fire department to pull out one of their trucks and have the siren wail (3 to 5 minute continuous blast for natural disasters; 3 to 5 minute rising and falling wail for nuclear attacks/air raids). Akron had special telephone circuits for civil defense purposes, the bell/light warning system for public/industrial buildings and schools of all types, and the National Emergency Alarm Repeater (N. E. A. R.) network. All the public buildings and schools had fallout shelters and some still do to this day!

@@neohistoryfan1014 Thanks very much for your interesting reply. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and remember the "Duck and Cover" school drills and such. Soon after the "Cold War", nuclear attack drills were phased out. With the U.S. and U.S.S.R., they had enough nuclear weapons to ruin the whole planet.. It was called "Mutual Assured Destruction" ( M.A.D.). No winners, all losers. An old saying, "The living will envy the dead". Check nuclear war on you tube. It is scary and sad. If mad man Putin could incinerate the U.S., without retaliation, he would. He has no soul to say the least. I hope Russia has a good nuclear launch failsafe system, like we do. If Putin the ability alone, God help the World.

How did it not set that tree on fire or blow out your eardrums?
@harrybarry2291 Жыл бұрын
The output of them is overwhelming. In order to set something on fire, it would probably have to very dry, thin like tissue paper and right in front of the projectors. You must wear good earing protection, like a quality set of earcups. Then you can't stand close in front of the projectors. The soundwave will vibrate your skull and bypass the ears. Before I got use to it, standing on the side working the controls would make me nauseated after a minute or so. Most towns have a 10 hp siren, like Ripley, N.Y., a Federal STH 10. I can hear it 5 miles away at our place. The Chryslers are 180 hp with a three stage supercharger blower before the air stream is chopped by the chopper plate.
@nickpaul8442 жыл бұрын
Cool
@michaelconstantinou91212 жыл бұрын
how do you speed up the siren on the side?
@harrybarry22912 жыл бұрын
The Chryslers have a manual throttle and an electric solenoid switch on the panel. When the switch is closed, a solenoid pulls the throttle wide open. They are designed to run full throttle, 4,600 rpm, for max power. Some postings show the throttle partly open. That does not let the spectators hear and feel its impressive capability.
