Thanks for all this history. This one is most important to me because I have a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 318. I bought it cheap enough because someone I know hit a deer with it plus after had major overheating issues. But is amazingly in good shape body wise especially from Iowa. It is leaking oil from rear of engine. I bought another 318 with 100,000 just to swap out. But I am going through it and check things,strength up the bottom end,put KB 167 pistons in it. Thinner gasket. Going to upgrade the camshaft to Comp Cams Extreme Energy Computer Controlled 206/212 camshaft. Throw on the Edelbrock Performer Magnum heads,and the Edelbrock Performer Magnum intake. Hoping when done atleast have 10:1 compression with a very good torque camshaft with high performance parts. Make it a reliable,fun,truck for the rest of my life. A good truck that gets me back and forth to work,getting me home in the snow of Iowa,and rotate big 35 inch tires with a 3 in lift from factory. I know the 360 would be better. But I don't have one. I do plan on buying another full truck for parts. Try to get one with a 360 in it. But I don't think I will have an issue. Good enough for me and what I need.

You surprised me. I read that Harry Westlake was the foremost engineer on the Chrysler Hemi. He also designed the V-12 Formula 1 engine Dan Gurney won with. He also designed the 3-valve Ford small block heads that won the last two years of GT40 at LeMans

Much appreciated information. Thanks for the effort to gather this much background. Been a Mopar fan since the early 70's when fortunate to have acquired a 1970 Duster. Man, what a fun car. It is a miracle I'm still here to tell about it, as I was quite young, and very dumb. The Duster seemed to be fine for short drag race speed, although it had phenomenal top end speed too. The only problem was the aerodynamics of the car was not conducive to high speed, it would float, which was very scary. I would just load a couple more bodies in there, and off we went at a 140+, with oversize tires, it was way +... That's all. God Bless🙏🏻🚙👍🏻

I like the magnum series motors i just wish the v10 was made with a distributor instead of a crank sensor, use the small block bolt patern in stead of cummins, and have it use the same front accessorys as the v8 and v6. With no aftermarket suport the v10 is very hard to swap into other vehicles kinda sad bc it would be a tire destroying machine.

I understood Chrysler did extensive research in WWII to produce a 2500 hp aircraft engine with hemispherical heads and that that research produced the early 50’s hemis. I believe it was called the XI-2220. It was superior to other engines at the time but was finished as the war ended and was never mass produced.

Main place I am finding any footage of cars with hellephant and hellcat is over on Graveyard Carz GMC had Mark put those engines into some of his restorations for SEMA. I just wish more was shown of people living with those engines.

I had a brand new 06 RAM with the 4.7 it was around 20 mpg and I put a flowmaster in place of the stock muffler and I was getting around 25 at 60 with the cruise control on

Please do a feature on Mopar V6 engines. I'm particularly interested in the 3.8l (2007 Pacifica). I know it came from the 3.3l family and also read it was a Mitsubishi designed engine.

We had a 2000 dakota RT and a 2000 quad dakota 4x4 with 4.7. The 4.7 Dakota would eat the RT alive at every point. I always assumed it was because of the 4.7 transmission having more speeds and the axle being 3.55

The 4.7L and the gen 3 hemi engines all suffer from poor quality heads which result in valve seats falling off and destroying the engine. Kind of surprised you didn't mention that. One day is fine the next day you'll have a $3,000 - $10,000 repair bill.

I have an '02 4.7L with 115k. No problems. Kept the oil fresh.

You're really downplaying how powerful the 318 Magnum was when it came out. 230hp was more than the Chevy 350 and Ford 351. The 2wd Dakota Magnum equipped ran 15s in the quarter. It would easily outrun the 454SS pick up truck. That Dakota punched way above it's 230hp rating. In 1992 230hp was not ho hum. Even the magazines that were HEAVILY Chevy biased acknowledged how powerful this "New" 318 was

I guess it really depends on what you compare it to, the late 60's early 70's were much higher in hp and the gen 3 Hemi's run Litterial circles around the magnum engines I have owned both 5.2 and 5.9 magnums the 5.2 Dakota pickup was good running it had a great HP to weight ratio and was pretty quick I think it was actually one of the most fun to drive stock vehicles I have ever owned, that is before the hemi days, it's small size made it very maneuverable but the fact is 230 hp is 230 hp saying it had more hp than the Chevy's of the day is not really making much of a point the GM engines complete terds in those years they were horribly under powered GM actually had a guy leading the company in those days that was dead set against building High performance cars and it shows his mind set was build a large number of stock plain jane vehicles and make money by selling large quantities of cars and trucks to the average family, the 5.9L in my 2001 4 by 4 ram truck was a different story that truck was heavy and definitely under powered and I had the 5.9 the 5.2 was even worse, I raced my buddy with a stock late model VW Beattle and he smoked me, in the 5.9 magnum powered ram, next I bought a 2004 5.7 Hemi sport ram truck and it would eat the Dakota R/T my buddy had with the 5.9 for lunch raced him a couple times and he gave up after that. I can tell you this ounce you own a gen 3 hemi in a ram or in a car either one you will never go back to a magnum engine.

Yep I agree 100% I'm a Mopar guy the magnum engines were pretty unimpressive in stock form I've owned several 5.9's and 5.2's have an SRT8 now it is so much faster and better running than anything magnum it's not even comparable it's like you said if you drive a hemi powered anything the magnum engines are instantly crossed off the list P.S. MY SRT 8 gets better mileage that my 5.9's did and has 300 more HP

@@Myvintageiron7512 I'm comparing the 1992 Magnum 318 to other V8s from 1992. The 230hp Magnum was superior to it's bigger competition the 350 Chevy and 351 Ford. Apples to apples right guys? OF COURSE the 230 hp rating from 1992 is pathetic compared to the offerings now. Apples to apples fellas. In 1992 the legendary 5.0 Mustang didn't make 230hp.

Yea you are correct the dodge magnum was probably the best in that era but just remember the fords and chevys we highly detuned in those years
