Hi Mark , just wondering mate , any idea did these old Val’s have a three speed auto . The old EJ Holders had the horrible 2 speed auto Hydramatic I think ? I got a feeling the early falcons also had a two speed auto ? I had an AP5 , that was a 3 speed automatic. I love all these old cars , simple , easy to maintain , everything was built to be fixable if need be , unlike today’s complex throw away plastic fantastics 😂.

@@mikldude9376 Chrysler used there own Torqueflite 3 speed auto, the best trans at the time. Wonderful smooth shifts. Holden used [ Slushmatic] Hydramatic 3 speed with a weird gate where reverse was all the way down. Nearly backed an EH into a wall thinking I was selecting 1st. Fords Fordomatic was a 2 speed until the introduction of the Cruisamatic 3 speed in the XP.

Thank goodness both Chrysler(Valiant) and Ford (Falcon) offered these two vehicles and woke up GMH out of their 12 year slumber !!! Now before anyone gets upset I am not knocking the FB & EK but when you see the styling very similar to a 1955 Chevrolet you can see that GMH was not overly concerned about any serious competition with the possible exception of the Ford Zephyr. Throw in things like ball joint suspension,145 hp, alternator, torque flite auto, reversing lights and it even made the new good looking EJ very basic in comparison.

The Holden mimicking the styling of the earlier Chevys was deliberate. Back then the men in the household chose what car to buy, and they were influenced by browsing old men's magazines in hairdresser's shops and elsewhere that were printed in the USA and thus carried adverts for Chevrolet. My father was typical of his generation - served in the Australian Army in World War 2 and was exposed to British vehicles and then US-made vehicles. The US-made vehicles were far more reliable, more pleasant to drive, and much more easy to service and fix. My father was allocated an army staff car when stationed in Japan after the surrender. It was just a very basic Chevy painted poo-brown. It made quite an impression on him. Back in Australia and the Holden 48-215 came out, from that point on, Dad would not consider anything other than a Holden no matter how modern the other brands were. Much to Mother's disgust.

This reminds me how much i love the 62 Phoenix , i'll buy one of those in original condition one day. Mark, a good series in the future might be the unique Aussie adaptations like the Phoenix , the aussie galaxies and local Chev belairs etc . There was a lot of aussie ingenuity and ad hoc in these cars to make them RHD on shoestring budgets like Plymouth and valiant dashes in the Dodges and Lincoln dashes in the galaxies .A good story i heard was Ford used to weld a second RHD firewall onto the local Galaxies over the original ones making the cars very quiet for the day because they had unintentionally invented one of the worlds first laminated firewalls! The 138 CI engine in the EJ really was a poor engine prehistoric did they even have a disposable oil filter the EH red motors smooth and quiet operation even if not as powerful put holden on equal footing with 225 engine as a modern powerplant never had a early ford falcon so no comment offered

I had an ex-government fleet EJ with the low compression grey motor mated with the 2-speed auto transmission. Nice car, was in perfect condition, but it sure was a slug to drive. Passengers used to comment on the engine revving on takeoff without much movement, as the torque converter did its job..
