Join me today for a trip to Throop fishery in Dorset. Today i will be fishing for chub using the long trotting method, a method i have rarely used within my fishing. See how i get on? will i master the method or fail miserably and keep watching to the end of the video as i had a bit of an accident and it's all caught on camera for you.

Lovely video! I have just started river fishing after moving to the Lot area of France. Totally share the excitement of something new, like you I just had a 5lb chub. I could not believe how high I felt, at age 66 I thought I was well past getting that BUZZ! Please keep up the videos.

Good angling mate. I think you underestimated the weight of that big one. It had a hump. chub don't usually start to develop a hump, until they are over 5lb+... and the smaller chub, was a nice sized dace. What you said about your experience, taken into account, I'd offer you a few tips. You are right, a longer rod would be better. I use a 14' carp waggler rod for rivers of that size. I do like a really soft action for chub though. Your dropper was too close to your hook. I like at least 6", more if it's deep enough. Your hook bait moves more naturally in the current, and don't be afraid to use big hooks. as long as the bait is bigger than the hook, go as big as possible. You got everything else spot on. Top job, nice result. I like your bank stick and bucket set up. Stay mobile, stay quiet and you'll hook more chub. A few minor tackle tweaks, and you'll land the majority. Hope you dun't mind my critique. Tight lines mate. Thanks for a well presented video :)

I would agree that the smaller fish was a nice dace. The more slender shape, yellowish fins, concave dorsal fin and pigeon chest all suggest dace. It was a lovely big chub as well. The two species can be easily confused. As Fred J Taylor once wrote " We spend our whole lives trying to catch a big dace, and when we finally do, it will be a chub"! Similarly, I find that whenever I hook a big winter grayling, something mysterious happens on the way to the net and they always turn into out of season trout!

Like Mark says, get yourself a centrepin reel, you`ll enjoy trotting that bit more. If you`re after a trotting rod, then you want something that`s at least 13ft long. The chubber style float you were using,is better used with the weight bulked up together and on shallowish water. For shirt button style like you mentioned, you`d be better off with a heavy stick or avon type float, which will still give you the option of bulking the weight together,to get your bait down quickly etc.....Great video......trotting rivers is a fantastic method .

Neneman Nick - thanks for the advice, I do have a centre pin which I think I will load up with some new line for my next visit to the stour. Might have to write to Santa for a new rod. 👍

Another great vid there Dave shame about those two fish you lost. The exact same thing happened to me yesterday i actually lost three fish but with the one that i lost, the hook pulled free from the fish but it stayed on the line however with the other two the hooks were lost along with a bit of the rather old and weak line that the hooks were attached to. Lesson well and truly learned i actually have another four hooks to nylon size 16's with the same old weak line which i shall scrap and make new ones. Lovely Chub you caught there a nice juicy 5 pounder and in contrast a nice little baby. Good to see you trying a different method and from what i saw you did very well. Look forward to your next video, tight lines.

cns180784 - yeah it was a shame to loose the first two which would of been good for the camera however I did learn quickly. I was fishing too light a bottom. I've now got me some small hooks on a 4lb bottom. Let's hope that these rigs will hold on to some of those big old River stour chub. Big thank you for watching. 👍

Well its good you learned from what lost you those fish and at the end of the day you didnt have a blank, you still caught fish. Unlike myself as today i fished a small lake that i fished on Saturday and today caught nothing, didnt even seem to get a bite. I may have got one or two nudges on the quiver which i'm fairly sure wasnt caused by wind but they could have just been liners. Having said that, line bites would be a surprise seeing as that would be an indication that the fish are active, moving around and should therefore feed. Today was just a mind blowing blow out. The overall weather conditions were similar to Saturday in terms of temperature, there was more cloud on Saturday and even had a tad of snow but otherwise was pretty much the same. On Saturday it was not far off a bite a chuck and i wasnt even putting out loose feed at all, fishing with sweetcorn. I intended on getting maggots but the tackle shop was closed and i thought without those it would be tough but it was anything but. Then today i go back fish the same lake, same peg but this time taking worms and corn for bait...but nothing. Maybe if i had taken maggots i might have got a couple. On Saturday i caught 3 Crucians, 2 Common, a Mirror, a Roach and a Bream. Lost 3 fish and missed several bites. My theory for the blankety blank today was that today followed some very cold weather. The heavy snow on Sunday and temperatures got down to -6 at one point. Also one corner of the lake was frozen and the 3 other lakes at the fishery were mostly iced over too. I noticed after almost constantly checking the weather that today the air pressure was low...on Saturday it was high. I read that low air pressure causes the bladder of certain fish to expand so they become uncomfortable resulting in little to no feeding. Well i think today was a harsh lesson learned about the key factor that weather is when fishing, at least in the winter. Despite the blank though it was nice to be out in nice surroundings and was a nice day in general.

Great video, love how your not ashamed to say thanks for teaching and giving advice, to many people in life are afraid to ask and you never should be, your a great angler and float fishing will only add to your arsenal, as proven with some cracking chub, it takes me back to childhood after school sessions biking down the blacktrap rivers in Cambridgeshire, what I used to do was roll a bread ball around the hook, dip it in the water pull it out immediately, it gave it a sticky solid outer layer, it stayed on the hook a lot better, id just trot it down stream near the far reed bank and id always have nice 4-5lb chub they couldn't resist the bread balls, one day my mate done the same method and a massive roach took his bread ball, I could not believe it managed too as roach mouths are not as big as chub but this was a nice roach, so mayby give that ago, great video nice one! tight lines & wet knees :P
