Chuck Berry - You Never Can Tell
Chuck Berry - You Never Can Tell
Chuck Berry - You Never Can Tell
It was a teenage wedding,
and the old folks wished them well
You could see that Pierre
did truly love the mademoiselle
And now the young monsieur
and madame have rung the chapel bell,
"C'est la vie", say the old folks,
it goes to show you never can tell
They furnished off an apartment
with a two room Roebuck sale
The coolerator was crammed
with TV dinners and ginger ale,
But when Pierre found work,
the little money comin' worked out well
"C'est la vie", say the old folks,
it goes to show you never can tell
They had a hi-fi phono, boy, did they let it blast
Seven hundred little records,
all rock, rhythm and jazz
But when the sun went down,
the rapid tempo of the music fell
"C'est la vie", say the old folks,
it goes to show you never can tell
They bought a souped-up jitney,
'twas a cherry red '53,
They drove it down New Orleans
to celebrate their anniversary
It was there that Pierre was married
to the lovely mademoiselle
"C'est la vie", say the old folks,
it goes to show you never can tell

Chuck Berry is, in my mind, one of the pioneers of R-n-R music as we knew it in our youth (I'm 63). The influence he had on other groups and solo acts is probably unmatched in history. The greatest thing about this GREAT tune, though, I think is Johnny Johnson at the piano. If I could only convince him to do a solo and lengthen that piano bridge in the middle of this song into three or four minutes. I once saw him in concert in a ballroom in Hollywood back in the early 80's. Reelin' and Rockin'.

I also had the pleasure to attend Chuck Berry's concert back in early 2009 or so. He was still rocking it & owning the place. He stopped the band, kicked a guy out who had a huge video camera on his shoulder. Mr. Berry said, " you ain't making no money off a me now somebody get his ass OUT A HERE . I ain't playin till HE'S GONE". Guy left quick and Chuck ROCKED the house old school style. Great night.

On this day in 1964 {May 9th} Chuck Berry performed in concert* at the Astoria Theater in London, England; it was his debut concert in the United Kingdom... During the calendar year of 1964 he had three records make the U.K. Singles chart; "Nadine (Is It You)" {#27}, "No Particular Place to Go" {#3}, and "You Never Can Tell" {#23}... Plus he also had three albums make the U.K. Top Albums chart; 'More', 'The Latest and Greatest', and 'You Never Can Tell'... * Three British groups opened for him; the Animals, the Nashville Teens, and the Swinging Blue Jeans...

Now I love Pulp Fiction as much as the next one and would quote it, but Chuck died today. So R.I.P Chuck Berry. I don't think a Pulp Fiction quote is right for now (I mean, some could be.) because Pulp Fiction is kinda humorous. But, yeah, R.I.P Chuck Berry. You were a legend. Not just a rock and roll legend, but a legend in general.

I was a young teen/twenty year old when Chuck Berry was popular and liked his music. I saw a special on our public TV station about him and did not know how really talented he was. His mother was a teacher and father a musician. He wrote all the lyrics to his songs and played that guitar like no other...seemed like a born entertainer. I believe we had the best music at that time. Although I worked at a record shop in '59 and also learned to like jazz and opera.

This always reminds me of a young couple who married at a neighborhood church. I remember her driving off in her wedding gown in her dad's car. Unfortunately, her marriage lasted two years when her hubby was killed in a car accident. Very sad. He was a very good looking, hard working, nice guy.

I listen to Chuck Berry's music nearly every day. Everybody my age (76) knows Berry's 1964 lyrics were "They bought a souped-up Jimmy, 'was a cherry-red '53." In the 'fifties and before, a "Jimmy" was a famous straight-6-cylinder car engine made by General Motors Corporation. In the 'forties and 'fifties it was very popular for hot-rodders to "soup it up" before higher-horsepower V-8 engines came along. The nickname was arrived at from: General Motors . . . GM . . . GEE ME . . . JIMMY. I wrenched on them in the 'fifties and 'sixties. "Souped-up" means modifying the engine to make it more powerful. The expression comes from horse-racing before the automobile age. To make the horse run faster, trainers gave it a concoction of stimulants, and the horse was said to be "souped-up." Personally, I always make Chuck Berry be singing about a "souped-up cherry-red '53 Chevrolet convertible", an absolutely beautiful car bringing back memories. But I suppose he could just as easily have been singing about a hardtop, I don't know his personal tastes there. Cars are like food and wine, only you know what tastes good to you. However, having followed Chuck my entire life, I do have an idea of some of his tastes! Today's KZbin reference to "soup-up jitney" is gibberish, although I realize it comes from one or two generations behind me having little car background, and offset by unlimited internet and social media access where events and history are rewritten. Yes, I know what a jitney is, but that ain't what Chuck's singin' about! Thanks, I feel better now. Charles Leivo, Cordova (Memphis), TN.

“The truth is no one really knows why Marsellus threw Tony out that window except Marsellus and Tony... I do believe my husband your boss told you to do anything I want... I wanna dance. I wanna win. I want that trophy, so dance good.” Cut to Travolta dancing effortlessly like his life depends on it. Like only a high-functioning heroin fiend slash professional killer could.

This song reminds me of my sister Theresa and her newlywed husband Mike dancing to this song like uma Thurman and John Travolta at the wedding reception
