I was not around for the Steeler dynasty of the 70s and was very very young, when Chuck Noll retired but seeing these clips of him, really makes me see how good of a coach he really was. I will say, it seems he left a good nucleus of players for Bill Cowher when he took over the next season and Cowher took it and had success with it and built it into his own legacy.

@Hector Hernandez a great qb that made the offense as great as it was. Early years, sure he was bad. But when he figured it out, he was the man. Many of the Steelers greats of the 70s all say the same thing, no Bradshaw, no dynasty.

O'Donnell was a starter for 4 seasons and went to the playoffs in every one. You know how many other Steelers QB's can say that? None.

@@johnbruce4003 i get you... however i see O'Donnell as the guy who can be characterized as a good qb that benefitted from a good offense and really great defense. Just as Kordell did for a number of years and Tommy Maddox for a year. However, while he was more consistent than those 2, when you put him on the Jets the next year, they went 1-15 if i rememebr right.

That aside, my point was Kordell had a few good years, Maddox one, O'Donnell a few good years and the rest were pretty bad over the course of 20 or so years. Decent to bad QB play, regardless of how good the rest of the team is, just isnt enough to get it done (00 Ravens being an outlier) in todays NFL.

Very fitting end for Chuck Knoll. The Defense gets 5 turnovers, and makes a last stand to win the game against their hated rivals reminiscing of the 70s defensive units. Had the Steelers taken Marino in 83, they'd be known as the QB dynasty as well with Bradshaw, Marino, and Ben.

That's really something how it worked out that the Browns were Noll's last opponent and Belichick of all people was the last man he coached against. And if Noll had stepped down a year earlier, who knows? Belichick might have been his replacement. Young, defensive minded master of the 3-4 defense, family ties to the Pittsburgh area. All those things that applied to Cowher were true of Belichick as well.

Agreed likely cheated in most SB caught 1st one. Spying on Cincy with bottom team. Records plays somehow knows perfectly how to defend or attack. Walsh bested him plenty in draft & playoffs. Noll could have written a different story for himself had he not FOOLISHLY passed on Dan Marino in the 83 draft. He did not adapt to the QB age and in his last 11 years he won 2 playoff games.

My favorite Steeler at the time was Eric Green. Didn't see him out there, probably hurt again. Sad to say, but it was time for Chuck Noll to go. It doesn't diminish what he was able to accomplish with the worst team in football. At the time they drafted Franco Harris, The Pittsburgh Steelers had scored the fewest points in history. In a 10 year period he made the worst franchise into the greatest ever. Sadly he did very little his last 12 years. Sound familiar in 2021? Of course Noll is the greatest coach in Franchise history, Tomlin is currently #3.

@@johnbruce4003 Even though they started sporadically for Chuck, Neil O'Donnell and Barry Foster were drafted during the Noll era. Both players hit the ground running and throwing when Cowher inserted them as F/T starters the very next season. Not to mention Dawson and Jackson were veterans on the O-Line when Cowher took over in addition to having G Haselrig who was a wrestler in college and the Steelers making him a project to convert him to football. He made the pro bowl during Cowher's first season

True. Barry Foster carried the entire offense on his back in 1992. His 12 100 yard rushing games and 1,690 rushing yards are both Steelers all time records. O'Donnell was a better than average QB, but doesn't compare in any way shape or form to Ben. Ben and Fast Willie beats the combo of Barry and Neil.

Cowher went 8 - 8 with that team. Tomlin won that SB with the hardest nfl schedule in 25 yrs at the time. Im not the biggest Tomlin fan, but he earned that '08 SB trophy. Fair & square. That team had to overcome a few injuries that year as well.
