A while back, I thought to myself, "the chorus is usually the catchiest part of the song, someone should make a radio channel that plays only choruses". Vaporwave answered my prayers. I can't stop listening to this track.

In the small repeating music loop that is life, we try desperately to grasp onto any meaningful sense of emotion that we can encapsulate and label/feel as "happy", "sad", "exciting", "beautiful", "tragic", "terrifying", but they all happen so quickly intertwining and shifting, that we cannot hold onto these individual feelings for more than a second.. instead, we sit back in awe as our senses are enlightened with the sheer blissfulness of the ever-changing state of the human condition. It's a cycle, a circle, never starting, never ending, only moving.. just like music.

I discovered this album after finding Nobody Here in my recommended, that song gave me so many chills and almost brought me to tears at some points. But to be honest, this one could probably top that. The thing that chills me so much about this is the sample choices. Every other song on the album sampled classic 60-90s hits, but the thing that sets this one apart is the sampling of two relatively new songs. It made me realise how fast nostalgia is advancing, and how sometimes random moments from just a couple of weeks ago in my life can feel so distant, how I long to have times back that may have only happened a year or two ago. It’s also beautiful and haunting, I’m torn between this and A5 as my favourite Eccojam.

This was like the second, maybe even first vaporwave song I ever heard. This was back in 2015. I had spent nearly 3 years locked up and when I got out I didn't have a PC or anything, just a phone. I was browsing /wg/ on 4chan looking for wallpapers for my phone. I happen upon this thread of "vaporwave" wallpapers. In the OP there was an explanation of what vaporwave was/is along with links to examples of the genre. I believe the first two songs I heard were, naturally, Macintosh Plus's Lisa Frank 420 and this track. I think the third was bbrainz "Tell Me How It Feels". But immediately when I heard this track A3, I was instantly hit with almost like hidden memories I had as a kid. I was able to visualize them very clearly and the feeling of nostalgia was overpowering. I couldn't explain it and have been a fan of the genre ever since. There is something very cerebral about this genre. It seems to trigger the part of your brain that stores your oldest memories.

@atomsplitter601 Жыл бұрын
so, i wrote a whole art analysis essay 💀 bear with me. hopefully this all makes sense lol the lyrics "be real / it doesn't matter anyway / u know ur just a little too late" are originally part of the song "Too Little Too Late" by JoJo. its about an ex partner only being in a relationship w/ the speaker for instant gratification, so the sampled line is specifically the speaker expressing disdain at their ex's attempts to rekindle their relationship so what happens when the sample is lifted from its context and left to be interpreted on its own? the lyrics suddenly become very generalized, not being able to be attached to any particular experience in general. you, reader, likely already picked up on this as ive seen others in the comments note that the line is quite meaningless lyrically. literally what does "be real / it doesn't matter anyway / u know ur just a little too late" even mean, like? 🙄 i also want to note how OPN's use of the sample supports the de-contextualizing. a) repetition. it's difficult to convey a complete idea in a 6-second clip of music. a timeframe of that length containing unique stuff is usually a part of a larger song or a body of work such as an album. repeating the sample for the duration of an entire song forces us to interpret it as its own piece, like a thought-terminating mantra. b) reverb / delay. not much to be said here; this adds fuzziness, adding to the haziness of the sample's meaning when de-contextualized. given the above, what does a3 say about pop music? i think this analysis gives backing to the interpretation of a3 as a critique of the abstract relatability of pop music lyrics. if u give the lyrics of Too Little Too Late a second look yourself, you'll notice that there aren't enough details to make the song about a specific event in an individual's life. whole above i stated the song was about a specific human experience, the lyrics could theoretically apply to many androphiles' experiences with boy trouble. the use of the sample in a3 pushes this to the extreme by giving us this uber-abstracted lyrical fragment devoid of any specifics that could alienate the audience. but because of that its lost the ability for listeners to connect to it based on lyrics, leaving only aesthetics.

@@deirdreb2474 If you drop a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will of course frantically try to clamber out. But if you place it gently in a pot of tepid water and turn the heat on low, it will float there quite placidly. As the water gradually heats up, the frog will sink into a tranquil stupor, exactly like one of us in a hot bath, and before long, with a smile on its face, it will unresistingly allow itself to be boiled to death. What Daniel Lopatin is doing here is quite similar. If the pitch and speed changed any quicker, you would have noticed.
