Was hoping to get a ratio, I have only used the Hunter/Trapper tan in the orange bottle but I definetly like the look of your tans and would like to try it this year. Trapping season starts today so a ratio update on your Tuesday Tips tomorrow would be excellent. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep up the good work

Gee, Chuck! Sorry to see the you had a big old tree drop onto your house! Hope you are all doing okay. Best of luck to you and yours. Also ... the Denatured Alcohol/Turpentine tan is an 'Old School' formula that really works well on small game ... Squirrel, Raccoon, Bobcat, Fox, Coyote ... just to name a few! Excellent tan for Rabbits and Hares too! Good video!

Can I use mineral spirits in place of terpentine? Terpentine apparently isn't available in my area.

I've tried this method and it works great, thank you for tip. But I'm having a problem with the odor of turpentine on the hide. I've washed the hide 10 times with dawn, but it still smells.,, any tips on that??
@LindaBissett5 жыл бұрын
I agree the smell is awful! I washed in Dawn and then soaked in vinegar and it still smelled! However once it dried the smell went away. It was just no fun while mounting!

Agreed so smelly

However, I have had better success with this than I did even with an acid pickle process. I had more hair slippage with the avid pickle. (Note: the squirrels I processed in the acid pickle were Road kill, it is winter and they showed no sign of decay but....)

Ruffly how many years will the hide last using this method. Some say a plain alum pickle won't last a persons life time. Will a vinagar pickle and this mix make it last for several decades maybe a life time? Thanks

Skin feet out to the last joint and remove the bones. All flesh has to come off the hide or they will rot

Will this solutions also work on snake skins?
@mirandarivers93789 жыл бұрын
ddavy5401 Here's what you may want to try, Take 1 part glycerin (about a table spoon) and 1 part water(about a tablespoon), mix them together. Take your air-dried snake skin and dip it in the solution. work the skin with the glycerin by gently pulling it in all directions. I do this a few times, say 2-3 times with each skin. I've tanned over ten beautiful rattlesnakes with the tail on and they turned out amazing, they're supple, flexible and ready to be made into anything.
@LindaBissett5 жыл бұрын
I tanned a huge bull snake in a 50/50 glycerine and alcohol bath for a few days. It worked Great. I mounted it in a coiled position and once dried I put on Mop & Glo floor wax to give it some shine. I'm not sure if the mop & glo is legit but it seems to have worked fine!

How do you keep them from getting stiff
@LordRusty510 жыл бұрын
This is a method for curing skins for mounting. Soft tanning would require sending skins to a tannery.
@pablopcllin10 жыл бұрын
Nope. It's just Chuck Testa.
@nickmalueg13077 жыл бұрын
thats crazy, I'm a trapper and I tan a lot of hides and I have to work it in to "leather" in the tanning process why don't you have to do that with your tan
@LindaBissett5 жыл бұрын
Because when mounting the hide you want it to harden into the shape of the animal forum.
@christophershipman28433 жыл бұрын
It's just a pickle to keep it from slipping and it's for mounting rather than a soft tan, not leather.

Hi Chuck. Love your videos. I'm new to taxidermy and have couple questions. First, do you salt the skins before you put them in ? Also would this work for deer capes?
@LindaBissett5 жыл бұрын
@@RichsHomestead you can put a skin in before salting. No to a deer hide, it is too thick. You will want to use an acid bath/pickle.
