Casey always played them both perfectly, for their own good, when necessary. This is best example of that. He clearly must've followed Chuck, to protect him, because he knew Chuck wouldn't be able to go through with actually killing someone. And then he held that card back til he needed to play it. Probably why he told Chuck he couldn't tell anybody. He knew that Sarah might not believe Chuck if he was the one to tell her. But by Casey admitting to it, she'd have to believe him. Well, played, Sir, well played. Best wingman EVER

I find it interesting that Sarah was packing the same bag before Casey told her the truth about the Red Test. Does that mean she was going to leave with Chuck even when she thought he had killed someone? If so, she was probably thanking Casey for making clear that Chuck didn't change & she isn't responsible for turning a good man into a killer like her & Casey.

Thanks for posting this as I am about to look at Season 3 again. I'll look for that bag.:) I think you are correct in that if her fears are founded then she is done with Chuck because he would be no different from any other men who were spies; the only men she really knows. Chuck offers a vastly different life she so deeply desires but yet cannot find. This was very evident is Seasons 1 and 2 and episode 1 of Season 3. I am thinking of that conversation in Season 2 where she asks Casey, "Haven't you ever just wanted to have a normal life?" So, yes, I agree it is the reason she thanks Casey.

bocconom Actually I feel that she was planning to go with Chuck even when she wasn't sure that he didn't kill the mole. Throughout the arc (beginning with Shaw's arrival) we see that she is unhappy with the idea of Chuck becoming like her and Casey. This is probably made worse by the fact that she knows that Chuck does it in part because of his admiration for her and he sees it as something heroic that she does. She on the other hand can only see the lies and deception involved in her lifestyle (the spy life) when she sees it in contrast to Chuck's life pre-intersect. She also knows that Chuck's motivation for completing the red-test was to be with her. This was the breaking point of their relationship with Chuck, not because she despised Chuck as a spy, but because from her perspective she is responsible for turning Chuck into a spy and thus costing a truly good person she loved a part of his humanity. So she was probably planning to leave at the beginning of the episode rather than stay around a permanent reminder of how she contributed in destroying Chuck's morality. But events of the episode show her that Chuck really hasn't changed at heart and he is still the moral guy who does the right thing and is in love with her. This is why I think she was ready to leave with Chuck despite not being certain about how the mole died. But a part of her would always regret being the driving force for Chuck completing his red test. Casey's confession absolves her of that and as she says in the later episode, Chuck is still her Chuck (i.e. she did not ruin the person she fell for after he fixed her phone & before he started defusing bombs).

He actually analyses this part as follows: "Even if the dialogue in Sarah´s hotel room is ambiguous, the audio-visual elements of the scene that follows argue for Sarah´s decision to change course and run with Chuck even before Shaw reveals his dark baptism or Casey reveals that he shot the mole. The clock reads 6:10 PM while Sarah packs, and the short drive from downtown will easily allow her to make the 7:00 PM rendezvous at (re-)Union Station, even after she, significantly, showers and changes her clothes. Next to the clock stands the photo of Chuck and Sarah pointedly missing on her side table in the last hotel room scene, when Sarah confessed she no longer loved Chuck to Shaw after his Red Test. Would she resurrect it to grace her packing only to leave for D.C. and a life with another man? Clearly she´s thinkin about Chuck. The reappearance of the photo also meshes with the lyrics of ´Down River,´ by Temper Tramp [sic] that accents both Chuck´s 11th hour appeal to Sarah in Castle and the aftermath of Casey telling Sarah that he shot the mole, thematically linking the scenes:" Bush then follows with citing the lyrics. I really enjoyed his book and I can recommend it for any Chuck fan who is interested in analysing the series a bit for himself and especially look behind important scenes between Sarah and Chuck. It is really well written and I think his points are well made. He very often looks at the scenes in detail connecting the visuals, the actin and the music and deciphers the way they intertwine and establishes a clear picture of how they are connected. After reading the scenes are even more enjoyable and have more to offer if you haven´t already discovered these things. I can warmly recommend it. :) P.S.: I don´t know the guy, I actually bought his book.

After all these years. Always! And always I had been wondering to myself - would Sarah leave with Chuck if Casey did not show up at the end? Was he that essential to their relationship or it was just a "cherry on top of the cake" or well...another way to show Casey's human(amazing) side? What do you guys think?

I know it's been a couple months but when I watched this the first time I didn't even think it was a possibility that she would go with Shaw. She loves Chuck no matter what and was going to run off with him, but Casey telling her that Chuck didn't kill anybody just really reinforced that its the same Chuck

@@SportsPhanatic17 before Casey arrived, Sarah was preparing the suitcase to go meet with Shaw. The clue is the Sarah's gun. Before Casey arrived, she put the gun in the suitcase, because she needed it to work in the spy world, so, she was going to meet with Shaw. After Casey said it was him who shot the mold, Sarah took the gun from the suitcase and put in the bed, meaning she decided to run away with Chuck.

Chuck just had his hero moment. • In 3x9 Shaw tried to Blow Chuck up to get the bad guys • Shaw sacrifice himself to try to complete a mission • Chuck risked his life, saved Shaw, and completed the mission Sarah witnessed the differences between each man’s version of a hero. Sarah gave Chuck all the credit. Hence the name of this episode. In the kissing Scene 3x12 Chuck - “Shaw would have done the Same.” Sarah says not true with her eyes. This scene: • Look at Chuck’s and Sarah’s picture on the night stand • Sarah is not conflicted enough to be leaving the love of her life behind • Sarah is not with Shaw at the hospital waiting for him to wake up • Sarah says “It’s not necessary to plead Chuck’s Case.” • Chuck asked Sarah to believe him Sarha was leaving with Chuck as an act of Faith.

@@joseoliveira4880 You've got this wrong. Shaw was supposed to be in the hospital recovering, Sarah had no reason to finish packing so soon if she was leaving with Shaw. Besides, they were supposed to wait for Beckman's orders (remember in the next episode Beckman tells Chuck that she is going ahead with her original plan, which means that until then Sarah had no instructions to follow) The gun was simply to show that she has finally given up the spy life and is ready to go with Chuck, and also give viewers some worry since Shaw immediately shows up after she throws the gun (chuck and viewers such as myself were thinking that Shaw might be taking his revenge on Sarah)

Sarah REJECTS Chuck! It’s done so lovingly everyone missed it. Background: Sarah believes that Chuck has changed. The man that she fell in love with is gone now that he is a spy. She told Chuck she did not believe him about not killing the mole and Chuck can’t supply a straight answer to what happened. Chuck learned to lie while becoming a spy, Sarah no longer has faith in Chuck’s words. Chuck just had his hero moment demonstrating that he is a far better spy than Shaw. Shaw sacrifices people for the mission, Chuck saves people and finds a way to complete the mission. It’s important to know that Shaw is the booby prize for Sarah not being with Chuck. The issue for Sarah is Chuck; not Shaw. • The scene opened with Beckman saying to have a safe flight to DC • Sarah looks to the Right - Yes • Sarah turns and faces Chuck and smiles - Shows respect and gratitude • Chuck says “Shaw would have done the same for me.” • Sarah’s eyes says “no that’s not true” - in 3×9 Shaw wanted to sacrifice Chuck • The music starts • Chuck says “I love you” • Sarah responds lovingly • Sarah says “You don’t have to” i.e. You don’t have to do this Chuck, I know what you are going to say” • Chuck pleads his case • Sarah says “I have commitments” • Chuck continues to plead his case • Sarah responds lovingly • Chuck says “Don’t answer now” • Sarah answers with her eyes - No • They kiss - She did not kiss him back because of the commitment (start over in DC) she made to Shaw to leave her baggage (Chuck) behind • For Sarah the kiss was a goodbye and a clear NO • The music leaves with Chuck - The music was for Chuck only • Sarah looks to the Right - Nothing has changed - She is still going to DC Sarah loves Chuck but she can’t accept a version of him that lost his innocence. Sarah also feels immense guilt for helping to make Chuck a spy. You might ask why is Shaw acceptable and Chuck is not. The psychology is too deep to go into here. But put simply, it’s because Sarah has no plans to share her heart with Shaw. She is retrograding into past relationship patterns; she is going back to being a pure spy without love, home, family, and friends
