I've heard that it was never really planned that he would be a bad guy, but that it was a possibility that had been considered. That they had suggested that somewhere down the line they might make it turn out he had been an enemy spy. Once they realized how popular he was they decided that they couldn't use that option. So he may not have been made into an enemy spy anyway. They just got rid of that option.

Typically shows with that kind of set up, hiding a secret life from others, would constantly need to keep that as a theme. Chuck was great that little by little family and friends learned the big secret identity, and the show was still able to stay great (if not better) as they worked that into the show rather than stick to status quo. Add in that the show was still able to do great even After Chuck and Sarah became a bona fide couple including getting married, and it shows how strong and incredible the show was.

Does doing a salute count as impersonating a military official? cuz, most kids would be guilty of this way more than chuck in this one moment... and if the line was meant about claiming to be a spy, he did say 'asset', and Devon be the one to misconstrue this as 'spy' but yes Chuck was out in the field doing some spywork as part of the team so technically he IS a spy, and not impersonating someone since often times (like la ciudad) he was there at the behest of the CIA and NSA, rather than 'Stay in the car' 'ITS NOT SAFE IN THE CAR'.
