Chuck Woolery, the charismatic game show host, was best known for hosting Wheel of Fortune, Love Connection, Scrabble, and other shows like Lingo, Greed, and The Dating Game.
Born in Ashland, Kentucky, Woolery's career spanned music with The Avant-Garde, whose song “Naturally Stoned” hit the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968, to acting in shows like New Zoo Revue and Love, American Style.
After a stint in the U.S. Navy and attending Morehead State University, Woolery transitioned to hosting after appearing on The Merv Griffin Show.
He launched Wheel of Fortune in 1975 but was replaced by Pat Sajak following salary disputes with Merv Griffin and NBC.
Woolery found renewed success with Love Connection, famous for its audience voting format, $75 blind date tabs, and his “two and two” hand signal.
He later co-hosted the Blunt Force Truth podcast with Mark Young.
Married four times, including to Jo Ann Pflug and Teri Nelson Carpenter, Woolery raised eight children and lived in Texas.
He received a Daytime Emmy in 1978 and appeared in films like Sonic Boom and The Treasure of Jamaica Reef.
Woolery passed away at 83, leaving behind a legacy in game shows and entertainment.
