My take is that, until Ichigo learned the truth and fully accepted him during the Blood War arc, his greatest and longest-lasting rival was White, the inner Hollow. White and Ichigo's relationship actually fulfills the role of a more traditional rivalry quite well - they have their similarities but also a handful of very important differences which make them clash often and thus grow because of each other. It all comes back to the 'King and the Horse' warning speech White gave. He and Ichigo are essentially identical in 'form, ability and power' since they share a body as two parts of the same person, but the irreconcilable difference in their approaches to killer instinct make the two of them resent each other and try to overpower the other. Ichigo is very compassionate and wants to win his fights honorably, meanwhile White, the personification of his deepest darkest instincts, revels in sadistic glee over the destruction of his opponents. Ichigo is frightened by White's savage and brutal nature, so actively fights to suppress him. Meanwhile, White is disgusted by Ichigo's softness and lack of killing intent so fights to overthrow him. They struggle and compete for dominance over Ichigo’s body and inner world because neither will accept playing ‘horse’ to what they view as a bad ‘king’. They both ultimately benefit from and have incentive to take part in this conflict. Whenever Ichigo overcame White, he learns a new lesson about battle from him, and can control a little more of his hollow powers, thus growing as a warrior. He is also constantly pushed to do better because of the subconscious threat that if he is ever too weak to overcome an opponent then White will always be there to bite at his heels. White also benefits from this relationship because since he is the real source of Ichigo's Shinigami powers, whenever Ichigo grows stronger so does he. And every time Ichigo is at death's door and White succeeds in taking over, the suppression of White's full power wanes, which is a process that is embodied by the evolving patterns of Ichigo's mask and the changing forms he takes whenever he goes full hollow.

Hey, Chuck! Have you thought about doing a video on the different Kido spells? In the light novels, it is established that the energy permeating the 3 realms in the Bleach cosmos is called Reimyaku. The Reimyaku in each realm is different. For example, Hueco Mundo's Reimyaku affected Chad into drawing out his Fullbring's true form. And it also provides nourishment for smaller Hollows, so that they don't have to consume actual souls. And that Kido spells like Hado #99 Goryutenmetsu are forbidden because it taps into the Reimyaku of the realm the caster is in. I think it would make a very interesting video! Keep up the great work!

Both of their first encounter with the protag was a fight, both banged the protag friend (Bulma and Rukia) - and in my opinion, Renji was kind of screwed over at times the same way Yamcha was. Both relate with a canine - Yamcha's 'lone wolf' and Renji's 'stray dog'. Also both Yamcha and Renji are insanely underrated characters to their respective franchises.

I’d say that Ichigo’s biggest and most consistent rival IS himself. His internal struggle with White, Zangetsu, and the other aspects of his personality is consistent throughout every ark. Ichigo’s journey is largely about coming to terms with his heritage, and he’s only able to move on to external opponents by overcoming his very real personal demons. Bleach characters are on the whole rather stoic and brooding, so thematically it makes sense that the greatest struggle for the protagonist would be with himself.

Each ark both him and Ichigo get stronger, to the point where him and Ichigo are like the strongest characters in the verse along with Aizen in CFYOW . Definitely would go for Grimmjow here. They had the most fights together, they still had that comparative relationship in the entire series. Renji had it more so in the start of the series, the first 2 arcs but he chills out over time

His rival is Uryu. There. Both get to fight roughly the elites of the enemy faction of an arc. They often intersect by supporting each other such as against Ulquiorra, Ginjou and Yhwach. I just think that rivals go beyond "I wanna kill/fight you" abd Uryu is more of Ichigo's rival throughout the story in that aspect. Especially since opponents they fight are like a 1-uping relationship.

Before watching the video I'd say that Ichigo is basically the antithesis to almost everyone in the series and that's why there are more people that can be defined as Ichigo's rival. Uryu is the calm and collected person, opposing the extrovert and fast-acting Ichigo. Byakuya is the noble that has everything that wants to keep the significance of laws, no matter the law or the person that is punished, opposing Ichigo, who wants to "destroy" any world in which laws are against his friends or the people that helped him, especially if the law itself has issues. Grimmjow resembles Ichigo more than anyone by character but his cruel manners brought by the fact that he is a hollow represents the point of the rivalry. So the rivalry is mostly flashed as a shinigami vs hollow battle, but the fact that their personalities resemble made it a fight between who will prevail, giving it more significance than a simple fight between a hollow and a shinigami. As seen in the last arc, a world where hollows and shinigamis are not in conflict might be a world where Ichigo and Grimmjow might even get along. Ulquiourra opposes Ichigo when it comes to feelings of love and friendship, fighting in order to convince the other that they are right and to show the despair/kindness of the world. Aizen is for Ichigo what Ichigo was for Byakuya, meaning that Aizen wants to destroy the world as Ichigo knows it. Their rivalry is forced because other than this and the fact that Aizen wants to hurt Ichigo's friends, their fight is pretty much emotionless.

I mean he's beat everyone who could challenge him power and ideal wise, but now being a parent is going to be his biggest issue. But I would say Aizen or Hollow side would be the biggest rivals. Aizen challenges Ichigo's ideals directly by turning his normal life upside down. Ichigo is fighting for his friends more importantly to live a normal life. Aizen literally and figuratively took that away from him before he was even a fucking blip on the map. Its really impressive. Hollow/White is the inner more obvious struggle Ichigo battles because one day some how White will no longer be the horse and stomp Ichigo head in the dirt after all lol. Great video!

I definitely like Uryu as the rival/friend Sasuke like character due to the way he starkly contrasts Ichigo. 1. Designs: Ichigo has bright, orange hair with a black kimono while Uryu has has dark blue hair with an all white cloak. 2. Fighting styles: Ichigo is a soul reaper that uses a sword at close range. Uryu is a Quincy who uses a bow at long range. 3. Thought process: Ichigo is very brash and essentially fights straight forward and attempts to over power his opponents. Uryu uses his mind during his fights, constantly analyzing his adversaries moves and creating strategic plans to defeat his opponents.

I think if the story continues into the new Hell arc and beyond, Aizen will become his rival. He's the only currently known (I'm sure there will be other Hell characters, etc) being currently able to throw down with Ichigo. The main problem is that Kenpachi, Renji, and Grimmjow could all jump full power Ichigo together and they'd still get bodied. Of these, I would say Grimmjow for the currently existing story, as he has no other rivals left (and only sort of saw Ulq. as one). Kenpachi has some rivalry with Byakuya and had one with Unohana. Renji has Byakuya as well. Though honestly, I would say no one at all right now. Ichigo is like anti-Goku. Kenpachi and Grimmjow _want_ to throw down with him again and he keeps noping out. The guy doesn't want rivals, lol.

The rival Is uryu because there are features appearest for anime's Rivals in uryu, Renji may be More friend. Aizen AND Grimmjow, may be more enemies. Uryu may be as a Sasuke in Bleach, Renji may be as Krilin in Bleach, Aizen may ve as Madara in Bleach, Grimmjow as a pocoro or Freezer In Bleach.

As for ulquiorra I think of him as more arch enemy. Question to all, is Ichigo the kind of character to hold longterm rivalries or is Ichigo the kind of character to move on with his life? Top choice for me it’s Renji through and through. Uryu I always saw as more of a Piccolo or a Kurama from YuYu Hakusho kind of character. Grimmjow fought Ichigo the most, but once he lost, he simply disappears until halfway into the final arc and barely has any interaction with Ichigo. Kenpachi and Aizen, in a way, were more so checkpoints for gauging Ichigo’s latent power than an actual rival. Renji, on multiple occasions, from engaging Ichigo after learning he entered Seireitei, to learning/achieving Bankai around the same time, the time skip with the Fullbringers, and the Zero Division training/getting their reiatsu boosted by Kirio, new Zapakuto, and training with Ichimonji, Renji’s main goal has to keep up/catch up with Ichigo. I wouldn't say ichigo has any "true" rival except maybe himself and to a degree you could also say Zangetsu/Quincy manifestation. but I think when taking narrative into consideration you could say he has "arc rivals" and they are not always the big bad villain which is why people have so many options for what his potential rival is even none at all. Uryu is progression rival, he seemingly starts out in front of ichigo but learns that ichigo is far stranger than he thought squashing the rivalry right there. Renji doesn't even qualify in my book. but narratively he is a "character relationship" rival in reference to Rukia. a sort of other side of the coin, what could've been thing. Grimmjow and Ulquiorra are both recognize your truest self rivals. grimmjow teaches him to truly began to accept who he is someone that craves battle/power. whereas Ulquiorra shows him that apart of accepting who he is will mean that he needs to overcome the perceived darkness inside him. even to a degree you could say Ginjo is a potential rival being another substitute shinigami. but this is just another what could've been situation. that ichigo overcomes with help showing that he doesn't have to be reliant on himself, but those around him will help give him strength. most of these really are different versions of mentors that teach the character a lesson, like how in Naruto many of his bigger fights are not just fights but philosophical clashes of ideal and further establishing hypocrisy in the opponents ideals. but the only true rival we ever really ascribe to him is Sasuke. tho technically as a child gaara would work and as a teen pain works. in conclusion, I just don't think that Ichigo actually has a rival. almost every challenge he faces teaches him about himself and my man's is a bit hard headed so he has to come to terms with some lessons a couple of times or more. hence multiple fights with grimmjow and Ulquiorra. this would also explain why ichigo clearly doesn't see kenpachi as a rival, because the lesson there was for ichigo to acknowledge he has limitations, but again those limitations can be overcome with assistance. where kenpachi is essentially doesn't learn that lesson for the entire series.
