Could this be the definitive version of this classic song penned by Leon Russell? The Carpenters and Donny Hathaway both had great versions...but this almost sounds like it was written for Ray.

Ray Charles is the ultimate version. Donny Hathaway a close second. Leon Russell created this masterpiece and sang it in his own way as only a songwriter who penned this song, can do. So I listen to each one and hear the different layers each artist brings to the song. Kodi has done a very close version to Donny Hathaway's version. Michael Buble' brought in his jazz element. How anyone can dislike Ray Charles's version, I have no idea.

I've been so many places in my life and time I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhymes I've acted out my life in stages With ten thousand people watching But we're alone now And I'm singing this song to you I know your image of me is what I hoped to be I treated you unkindly But darling can't you see There's no one more important to me Baby can't you see through me? 'Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you You taught me precious secrets Of a true love You wanted nothing You came out in front When I was hiding But now I'm so much better And if my words don't come together Listen to the melody 'Cause my love is in there hiding I love you in a place Where there's no space or time I love you for my life You're a friend of mine And when my life is over Remember when we were together We were alone And I was singing this song to you I love you in a place Where there's no space or time I love you for my life You're a friend of mine And when my life is over Remember when we were together We were alone and I was singing this song to you We were alone And I was singing this song to you We were alone and I was singing this song Singing this song to you

My brother & I had the privilege to see Ray Charles perform live in Australia 2003, 1 year before his death....he was amazing. Before my brother died by suicide some years later, he sent his wife a text to say "I will met you in a place, where there is no space and time". Whenever I hear this most poignant version by Ray Charles, I think of my beautiful music loving brother and the many concerts I'm sure he has seen in heaven. Donny’s version depended on a blues feel in the chords and voicings whereas Ray’s emotional palette with the tasteful piano and orchestra is orders of magnitude wider. Donny also flubbed the lyrics, saying, “I’m singing this song TO you.,” rather than FOR you. “FOR you” as Ray sings it conveys a much stronger message. Donny is a very great singer, but in mining this song he missed the vein of gold. Ray tapped into it directly.
@paulahunt3508
@paulahunt3508 Жыл бұрын
@Brian Shelton You are 100% CORRECT! Ray’s rendition is the BEST! Donny Hathaway’s is good, but Ray’s flows so much smoother. Maybe it’s because of his piano, I’m not sure. You people that disagree with Brian and me, go back and listen to Donny’s. Then come back here to Ray’s version, and you’ll hear exactly what I’m talking about. Don’t get me wrong, Donny’s is very good, but Ray is just smooth, no breaks in the music. It flows so perfectly. If you don’t agree then, we’ll just agree to disagree. We surely won’t argue over such a BEAUTIFUL SONG ABOUT LOVE! Many BLESSINGS TO ALL. 4:03

This from a friend of mine, it was written for Ray: Most people remember "A Song for You" as the 1972 hit for The Carpenters ... the spooky brother and sister duo of Richard and Karen Carpenter. But the song was written by Leon Russell ... the enigmatic songwriter, recording artist and band leader who passed away in 2016. I booked Leon Russell for a show at KatManDu on the Philly waterfront back in 1994 ... and had the pleasure of having lunch with him the day of the show. He told me a fascinating story about "A Song for You" which I have never seen recounted anywhere. As Leon explained it, he had originally written "A Song for You" for Ray Charles to record in the late 60's. But when the deeply superstitious American musical icon listened to the song he was shaken by the lyrics ... telling Leon that it scared him how closely he related to the lyrics. Though he loved the song Ray Charles declined to record it because of its eerie effect on him. So Leon went on to record the song himself in 1970 and made a killing when the Carpenters version become a pop chart hit two years later! Then in 1993 Ray Charles finally relented and recorded "A Song for You" for his "My World" album. While telling me this story at lunch ... Leon leaned over and patted me on the forearm, smiled with a devilish grin and said "Ray Charles recording that song made me a million dollars."

My husband is a songwriter and recently played me something he wrote that prompted me to remember this. Not just this song, but this specific version of this song. I'm very old school and precise about these things. I now know that Leon Russell wrote and recorded the song. I also learned that there are several versions of it on the internet and I've listened to all of them. This particular version by Ray Charles has that inexplanable 'it"factor that is impossible to explain. It's not something that should be up for debate - it's neither wrong or right. It just is. Leon wrote an amazing song from his heart and soul. We, the public, are blessed to have been able to experience this song, feel it, interpt it and claim it as our own. That alone, is spectacular.

Ray Charles recorded his version of this song on his 1993 album My World. Released as a single, it reached #4 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles, and won him a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Charles also performed the song at New York's Beacon Theatre on April 9, 2003, as part of Willie Nelson's 70th birthday tribute (released on DVD as Willie Nelson and Friends: Live & Kickin'). Leon Russell sang the first verse, Willie Nelson sang the second verse, and Charles sang the remainder of the song in this unforgettable performance. Nelson, who stood nearby during Charles' performance, was moved to tears.

So my son is getting married next month and wants to have a mother son dance, and I suggested A Song for You by the Master Leon Russell, and he said its pretty emotional. Yes it is. Then I suggested Queen of the Roller Derby! Didn't go over well, but damn I fell in love with Leon from that song lol. Rip Master Leon!!!!!!!

This man earned and was surrounded by a beautiful world that he never even got to see. This video could have been recorded in a closet. He never got to know the beauty of the places he preformed... He just knew the beauty of the sounds he made. And way those keys felt. And that was enough..

I was born in 1960. We used to watch Ray on Ed Sullivan and other such variety shows. My Dad did not like him. I loved Ray's singing and playing so much that I stood up to my Dad when I was 5, 6 or 7 (hard to recall exactly) and disagreed with him and told him so. My Dad had a temper, so one did not stand up to him too readily.

Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future.

Over 200 artists have covered this amazing piece of genius & I think Ray did it true justice. But I still prefer the original. Leon wrote it in an attempt to persuade Rita Coolidge to change her mind and not leave living in L.A. & return to her more stable roots in the Mississippi Delta. Leon poured his heart and soul into that effort. But Rita simply couldn't stand the craziness and split to be go back.

I remember the first time I heard this - I was driving in a car with a crappy radio and tinny speakers. And despite that, I remember that by the end of the song I could feel the hair on the back of my neck sticking up and had goosebumps on my arms - such an incredible performance. He really made this song his own.

Music is a force that flows among us all. The amazingly talented people who create it, who perform it, wouldn't exist if all of us didn't feel it and embrace it. The fact is that we are all connected by it in one way or another. The artist creates freely and independently and then is forced into dealing with another realm of reality called - success! My take on this is this - if Leon Russell wasn't a musical genus and didn't write this song after suffering a heartbreak and if Ray Charles didn't exist at all - we all would have never experienced this incredible moment in time....

One of my favorite songs of all time. As far as I'm concerned it's Leon Russell's greatest composition. It's perfect in every way and as Ray Charles always did, he made it his own. He and his piano were one instrument and it's sensational to watch.

I've been so many places in my life and time I've sung a lot of songs, I've made some bad rhyme I've acted out my life in stages With ten thousand people watching But we're alone now and I'm singin' this song for you I know your image of me is what I hope to be, baby I've treated you unkindly but girl can't you see There's no one more important to me So darling can't you please see through me 'cause we're alone now and I'm singin' my song for you You taught me precious secrets of the truth, withholdin' nothin' You came out in front and I was hiding But now I'm so much better so if my words don't come together Listen to the melody cause my love's in there hiding I love you in a place where there's no space or time I love you for my life, 'cause you're a friend of mine And when my life is over, remember when we were together We were alone and I was singin' my song for you I love you in a place where there's no space or time I've loved you for my life, yes, you're a friend of mine And when my life is over, remember when we were together We were alone and I was singin' my song for you, yes We were alone and I was singin' this song for you, baby We were alone and I was singin' my song, Singin' my song, singin' my song, singin' my song Singin' my song
