Mountain School District, overpowered, overgeared it how to do it! Damn, typed this in before you actually said it Charlie! I so share your delight in driving a well set up and well maintained machine in the mountains. Learned to drive (a bus) on an MCI in Yosemite and it ROCKED. Talk about instant and natural consequences if you don't learn how to track your rear axel in your lane, or use your engine brakes and gearing effectively, never mind where you find yourself looking for a fast turnout and park, if your pretrip gave a little more credit than the state of the vehicle deserved. SO MUCH FUN. I miss it. Sure also wish I had your mechanical knowledge, big respect to you, Charlie and always having fun learning from you.

Brianna is impressive. I just bought a 1989 Toyota dolphin, it’s a six cylinder. I’m looking for someone to do a few little changes in it. That’s not easy to do in small area in a small town. If I was physically able, I do it myself because it’s not much. On the spur of the moment, kind of thing after I looked at it. Made sure it had the right axle and no soft spots. It drove 50 miles no problems. I figured I could always resell it if I doesn’t work out for me. There were 2 interested parties waiting to see it. Those buses are going to be great, especially the Shorty. I had been looking for a van that I could stand up in for three years. Something I could afford, but I saw the RV on craigslist. It was redone inside in 2006 in and engine was partially rebuilt. And it was not real dirty, like I expect old campers to be. That would’ve made me turn around and walk away. I don’t want to mess with dirty carpet and such. It just had a little dusty smell, but that’s it. I get it back Saturday. It’s getting its brakes done. It passed the safety inspection, but I still wanted the brakes in great condition. I hope I can find someone without going on craigslist. Again.

Hey Chuck. This is That Alaska Guy. I love this video. I wanted to comment on finding bus insurance which has been something I’ve been trying to do. I ended up getting a policy from Allstate. My bus is a 2004 bluebird 40 footer 98,000 miles. Liability insurance only with roadside assistance total policy cost for one year $109 not a month but for the whole year. The other company that I found was good Sam and they write policies through progressive it was a similar price but when I was not driving, the bus they required that it be kept in a locked building , which was not obtainable for me. I hope this helps you or anybody else trying to get insurance. The pictures of the bus that Allstate wanted was only to prove that it had a RV title and that the seats had all been removed. I would be happy to one of these two buses that you just had here they both look great , keep up the good work

You can buy a small tool for less than $100 that lets you take off the lug nuts by hand with very little effort. It's a great reduction device that takes about half an hour to remove and put back 10 lugs but it's better than waiting on the side of the road for a service truck. Stop off at a harbor freight for a 10 ton bottle jack on the way home and you are better prepared for a flat. I used to go to Les Schwab because they had good prices but every time I went there recently the truck tires were breathtakingly high.

Virgin tires can flap, and recaps are not less reliable. 22.5 are pretty easy to change yourself if you have a golden buddy. The newer 926 is the smallest truck engine to have an optional compression brake AND exhaust brake, don't expect to sound like a logging truck Mercedes made it quiet.

You mentioned different kinds of brakes-engine brakes, air brakes, etc-so I’m wondering which kind you think is best for a medium-large bus in mountain driving? Assume the bus has new tires.
@johnnylightning14919 ай бұрын
You should have both. It's not an either/or proposition the engine brake is for the long downhill runs so you are not using your service (regular) brakes and the service brakes are to stop the bus at stoplights etc.
@ChuckCassadyYT9 ай бұрын
Bingo
@colleenbalch3289 ай бұрын
In this case, your air brakes are your service brakes, and your engine brakes are supplemental. Especially in the mountains, they are very very helpful.
@EffieG-ez9tf8 ай бұрын
@@johnnylightning1491 Okay, I know what a brake pedal does, and when driving in the mountains in Colorado as a teen, I was taught that one thing you NEVER do is ride the brakes all the way downhill. Big no-no! Burns out your brakes causing catastrophic falling off side of mountain, etc. Got it. ☺️ One other thing I was taught which can help is to down-shift when necessary into second gear, or Low gear, to slow down the engine, and just tap the brakes occasionally. This is how I was taught when driving down Pike’s Peak as a teen. (My Dad had faith.) Is the down-shifting what you mean by “engine brakes”? If so, most of us who aren’t as familiar with the lingo you speak would appreciate if you folks who know so much more than we do would just please explain things in civilian terms. Please and thank you. 😉 And thanks for helping us learn.

Perhaps you have one of those transmission based engine retarders based on the hydraulic sound you hear but it would be super weird to put one on such a small bus, they are not very common.

Glad Y'all made it home, with only buying tires you were gonna get anyway. I have a '09 Chevy Shuttle with Duramax and Allison drivetrain. Had a transmission interlock, that the Glaval bus folks were kind enough to tell me how to delete.) Thanks Chuck.

I figure if if I cook not complete the task, the next person would be happy to do so because they got it for free. I have the solar panels, the diesel power heater, a couch, bed, carpet, etc. I had to come my my own mechanic, because it’s $160 an hour for mechanic. I learn how to change my own brake lines, change the brake calliper that was sticking. the fillet I had when I was driving that 2004 27’ international bus was surreal! Many, many years ago one of my older brothers made a living buying and selling used school busses. This was in B.C., at a time when the mining and forestry industries were booming. The mines would use them as something called a "crummy" (I think?) to take the workers to the mine face, and that type of use was similar to the forestry folks as well. So, when I finished University, I offered to go out west for a couple weeks to help go fetch busses. The buying and locating wasn't the issue, it was having enough able bodies drivers to drive them back to the coast. Let's just say, it was an "adventure". We did laugh a lot because well, you may as well, or you'll just end up crying. This was a time when you could buy a really decent full sized school bus for 1,500 bucks! When I see some of the prices nowadays, I just have to scratch my head. But hey, I'm old. Good luck with the "new" purchases.
