Thanks sir. The tent stove i referred to building was under the instruction of one of your videos. I still have it in one of my sheds today and use it for thawing out small engines and so on. Also, interestingly enough, I was approached by a company just this past week who offered me one of the products you showed in one of your videos (RBM). They mentioned your name and sent me the video link ( of course, I saw it already). Merry Christmas to you and your wife and I hope you have the best holiday season.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-SurvivalАй бұрын
@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors Awesome. Of course it is totally up to you to decide, but I really love the two RBM tents we have. Connie and I were planning on doing a campout using one of those tents just this week but unfortunately life got in the way and we had to cancel. However, your insulated ice fishing tent here in the video would be hard to beat. May you and yours also have a great and blessed Christmas.

Snowmobile camping - almost like car camping. Nice tent and much better for snow load and winds than a wall tent. I like the welding blanket behind the stove. Brilliant.e I wear thin wool or polyester liner gloves B/C cotton holds moisture like mad. TIP: Cut a 1 1/2" to 2" hole in the back of yer stove as low as possible and bolt on a collar that's threaded to accept a 2" long threaded pipe. Wire wrap a matching diameter flexible metal duct and run it out beneath yer tent wall and up so it hooks over a tripod of branches (or cheap camera tripod) and faces down. COLD air from outside will fuel the fire instead of sucking warm air from the tent. The tube also needs a damper section near the stove. This is far more fuel efficient as well B/C you keep the warm air all inside.
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoorsАй бұрын
That’s a great tip. I have experimented with different ways to bring in fresh air to keep my stove running well. I see these stoves with the intakes built into them as well

@hamiltonharper5 күн бұрын
I've done this in my hot tent. Best part is you can cook your fish on top of the stove and keep your beer cold on the ice. Just know zippers don't work when it's below -20 so I recommend getting a tent that has flaps or a door, like a Russian Bear or Arctic Oven. A double wall tent can cook you out of it even in -40 so a stove will a damper is a good thing too

Great video, Chuck! I live in Saskatchewan, so I can definitely appreciate the cold temperatures you experience in Labrador. A lot of the terrain you were snowmobiling through looks quite similar to what we have out here. I’ve gone winter camping multiple times while ice fishing for lake trout, and there have been evenings where the temperature has dropped to around that minus 35°C mark. It’s always been an adventure for sure-loads of fun and an unforgettable experience to say the least. We typically pack everything onto our sleds, travel roughly 30 miles in, and set up camp along the lake. I’ve got a Ski-Doo Expedition 900 ACE as well-great machines! So far, it hasn’t left me stranded. We usually use outfitter tents and layer them with insulated tarps for extra warmth. Once everything is set up, it’s pretty comfortable. I also have a large ground sheet made from the material of one of those big coverall buildings. They were demolishing it at work, and since it was going to be thrown away, I grabbed a piece. It works great-it’s nice to walk on and really helps reduce the cold coming up from the ground. At night, I store my clothes inside my sleeping bag so they’re warm in the morning. Getting dressed can still be a bit of a challenge … grin … but at least the clothes are cozy! You’ve got another subscriber!

I used to deliver to Canadian Tire in Seven Islands every Tuesday for years. In the winter O would shut off the truck engine and turn on the auxiliary heater. I would leave the fan off so I wouldn't kill the batteries, curl up in my -40 sleeping bag and sleeping like a bug in a rug. N the morning I would reach out and turn on the heater fan and in 5 to 10 minutes the whole truck would be warm. As you know Chuck some of those winter night would be pretty cold. By the way if you ordered from Canadian Tire back in the nineties chances are I brought it from the warehouse to Seven Islands

I had an image of him too. A group of us back in the late 80s and 90s would go to a small provincial park in Nova Scotia to welcome the new year in. We used to almost fill our aluminium bottles with water we had boiled just before bed put our wool socks over them to dry and put them down a the foot of our sleeping bag. We had warmth Until about 3 or 4 AM, water to make coffee and a dry pair of socks. Nothing like the sound of snow sliding off a tent.

Great tips Chuck! I would like to add one if I may… Be careful about blowing into/using your breath to inflate your mattress. It’s possible you could induce mould inside the mattress because of the moisture in your breath. This is why you see folks waving their inflation bags around like lunatics 😂 Greetings from Germany 🍻👍
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoorsАй бұрын
Good point sir. My intent is to “round out” the bag, but like you say, it’s a double-edged sword with the moisture. Certainly beats blowing it up by mouth though lol. I’ve done that, quite lightheaded and ready to lay right down on it when done lol
@justinw1765Ай бұрын
People have actually cut into used Thermarest mattresses (the ones that use baffled foil layers as insulation) and found that there is no mold in them, even with directly blowing them up with your breath. I wouldn't say this applies to the ones that use down or open cell foam as insulation, but it does apply to the foil ones.

Awesome video as usual Chuck! I would have loved to have all of today's awesome survival gear when I was in my teens & 20's, but it didn't exist. We used to winter camp in quinzee's. Our mattress' consisted of spruce boughs to get you off the snow, then a space blanket, then a large cotton towel/blanket, then a wool blanket or nylon afghan. The afghan (or wool blanket) would allow your body moisture to leave your sleeping bag and be soaked up by the cotton blanket underneath it, so you weren't laying in a wet bag. When we got a little older (30ish) we started using a tent and army cots, but still with the space blanket, cotton towel and afghan blanket, which I would bet money works better than your air mattress, but is a wayyyyyy bigger load to haul - lol. Oh, and we never used a wood stove or a heater back then either and stayed nice and cozy warm at night, even in -30. As we got older (40ish) we graduated to hot tents and now, well, I don't even go out winter camping anymore, but I still use the cotton blanket and afghan whenever I'm in my little toy hauler. I have a furnace in it for fall camping, but I hardly ever use it. Having said all that, I would much rather have your tent and stove than how we did it 40 years ago - lol. Would have made things sooooo much more comfortable! Thanx for taking us along on your adventures! Have you had a chance to read any Patrick McManus books yet?
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoorsАй бұрын

Hi Chuck, I'm enjoying your videos, I also mentioned it to my boys, and they enjoy the videos also, actually one of my son, bought that same Eskimo tent, and he's looking forward to do some winter camping in the near future. In the video, you mentioned, the small amount of frost at the bottom of your tent, made me think of your fan you have on top of your woodstove back at your house. Maybe it would be a good idea to try it inside your tent to move the warm air inside.
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoorsАй бұрын
100%. Air circulation would rectify all that. The same as turning up the defrost fan in your vehicle. I have one of those fans so I should carry one with me (maybe a smaller version). Good point.

I try my best to keep it real - I got close to 2000 offers from companies this year, but maybe only plucked out 2-3. And only if I feel it will benefit both myself and the viewer. And it has to be honest. I appreciate you tuning in my friend.

Im preparing to solo hike around 10km and winter camp this saturday for the first time, I feel prepared and have all the right equipment but it is going to be the darkest night of the year with 20h of darkness, and that is the challange for this trip but also my biggest fear. Your tips were greatly appreciated especially the one about feeling vurnable in the wildness. keep up the good work!

Tks and good luck on the trip!!

@@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors I forgot to update you, I made it alive. It was a great experience! I prepared well and camped very comfortably and warm it was around minus 12-14 degrees Celsius with no heater stove.

That's a great tent...I also use a cot..it's a great place for fire wood under it...I notice you have abandoned the grate inside the Wood stove...I have as well and so far no issues I was using the wood stove bricks but when I was packing things up they hold the heat so long...another great video thanks for the tips..cheers
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoorsАй бұрын
I don't like the grate as when you add extra wood, you need the new sticks to make connection with the existing coals - the grate restricts that. Plus it just takes up extra room from putting in larger wood
@mikebezanson7777Ай бұрын
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors I completely agree those are the same reason I leave it out as well...better burn and more wood...Thanks reaching out Chuck

Grates ruin fires in any air tight stove. They let the coals drop through and go out, and you use twice as much wood. The wood sitting on the bed of coals is what keeps the fire going. We have several airtight stoves big and small, different makes, no grates in any. Works so much better. Great video and thanks!

Those tents look good. Going to check out those snowshoes, I need some new ones. Probably won't get any snow though if I buy new ones lol.
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoorsАй бұрын
They aren’t the best quality Barry, but they are light, cheap to buy, have the BOA tightening system, and narrow enough to fit on my skidoo running boards (so I can leave them on while I’m driving)

Great tips , I have a tip , they take a bit to put down the first time , but not bad when you get a pattern , but what I use in my insulated Eskimo is 1/2 inch thick interlocking exercise matts for a floor , once I pack down the snow , seems to make a world of difference , I use them when camping on the ice ice fishing , once you get tent warm the Matt’s dry off and you can wear sandals on the floor event bare feet I’ve done , is actually warm to touch , and to cheap you can just put Matt’s down wear you walk don’t need to cover whole floor , still makes it nice for walking around the tent and keeping things dry on the floor , also I’ve used a eco stove fan on wood stove, helps circulate the air , they don’t seem like they work but they do make a big difference ,
@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoorsАй бұрын
That's a great tip for sure, and I'll have to try those mats. Thanks!
