I had this discussion with people the other day. How is someone that's forced to take sides in prison gangs in order to have any protection, who sees uncaring officers look the other way, who receives no aid on being reacclimatd to society, who has a multi-year long resume gap, who needs to go out and immediately start paying bills and working again... How are people in that position supposed to be "better" or "normal" after all of that? And that isn't even going into how free-for-all and violent and draining and heartless everything to do with prison is. Nothing gets done to address the problems that led to people turning to crime in the first place. If their position was already desperate enough for them to turn to crime before going to prison, then what is it about prison that is supposed to lead to them doing better once they're on the outside? Prison recidivism is the point. They want society to see criminals as unrepentant scum that deserve to be behind bars because they're socially and morally broken people, and the powerful use that otherizing attitude that they foster to keep making money off of inflicting obscene degrees of harm

@@StomachPlugRegarding the work gap and needing to still pay bills, my sibling did two years in jail and then was out on probation. He lived at home with me and my mom, but in a string of bad luck, my mom and I both lost our jobs and of course in a small town, it was difficult for him to find work as well. Probation requires paying a monthly fee of about $40. Fail to pay it...and you are arrested again. My mom and I couldn't pay it, and so yes, my brother was taken back to jail. I wanted to raze the fucking world to the ground as he hugged me goodbye in handcuffs. It's such a damn catch-22, that someone is expected to pay probation when they can't get a job and are jailed for essentially the fact that it's so difficult to find employment. He spent another year in prison...all because of a missed probation fee. And yes, we informed the sheriff's office of our situation and they didn't care. Similarly, years later, his case worker died and the work of the case worker was never passed on to anyone else. This included informing him of a court date, so he missed it. Another two weeks in jail. However, once he got out, I went with him to court. His probation was still being handled in that small town, though we had moved to a nearby city. The probation officers would just leave for the day and not tell anyone and so my brother would call ahead to schedule an office visit to make the probation payment (after the extra year in prison) but nobody would be there and he'd wait up to two hours for someone to return and nobody would be there to take the payment. So, he'd yet again have to go back to the town, losing more time from work (it was easier to find a job in the city and his employer knew and was understanding of his situation. He sometimes lost his position at work, like during the two weeks, but there was still another position available, so thankfully, he wasn't just completely out of work). After the incident with the case worker, the judge finally transferred his case to the city we lived in, where there's way too many people for the probation officers to pull bullshit disappearing acts. He never had any issues after that and now lives in a new state entirely and so far, everything has been going good. But it took two additional stints in jail for us to get to this point despite him doing everything he could in his power to remain compliant. But it's always an arrest first and ask questions later culture.

While some does actually go to be used for legit purposes, people have researched and shown the amount of money that some of those schools are sitting on that is unused when it could cover the tuition of a student from a not alumni family who just busted their butt in school, but the school prefers it's reputation be upheld. But the legacy admissions percentage isn't that high; like 20ish%, so for every 1, 4 regular people get in. Because 80% of all white undergrads who go to Harvard are from the legacy portion, so plenty of non whites get in with the right scores and personality. You're right, they're likely from rich families that contribute to the schools so they can continue to be rich. If they really wanted to solve the issue. They could just let more students in every year. But they don't because they want to manage resources better for those that they want to let in. Plenty of schools are doing this, they're making it harder to get in, but rewarding those that can get in despite the increasing standards.

There is no objective reason to give legacy students an advantage in admissions and the reasons they state for it being beneficial like multi generational relationships can continue to exist even if acceptance rates are the same for everyone. There could still be a club of some kind to link "legacy students" with alumni and do networking events or mentoring but the difference would be that those "legacy students" would have been accepted purely under their own merit and not just because their parent happened to go to that school.

As a current Wesleyan University student, and someone who works as a student staff member at the office of admissions over the summer, I can say that the adult staff who look over applications (as we, the student workers, will never see them) have tried for years to find ways to be blind to certain aspects of an application (race, need, legacy, relation to staff and donors) during the first round of selections when they cut down applications to more manageable and better suited candidates. And then they have worked with what remains, taking everything into consideration. Since the Supreme Court decision, they will no longer add race back into the second round of selection, and since today's decision, they're no longer going to add legacy status into the second round either. But, with the number of calls I received today at the office, people don't understand that this doesn't ban legacies from getting in, it just doesn't help get them in if they otherwise would not have. We want good students who will help allow Wesleyan to remain strong and diverse in all aspects, including but not limited to socioeconomic status, geographical region, and interests. Being the child of a graduate does not make you better suited for the university than anybody else, and if you want in, you should have to show that you have the merits and ability to succeed just like anybody else. I finished giving a tour today and checked my email and was surprised that Roth made the announcement because I genuinely expected us to be one of the slowest schools to adapt to the new landscape and make good decisions for the continued success of the student body and school as a whole.
@imarobotking Жыл бұрын
so am i right in thinking that legacy status for a student, is that a student will be given admission just because a family member previously went to the place of education?
@jtrout5 Жыл бұрын
@@imarobotking Legacy admissions are viewed that way but don't necessarily work exactly in that manner. Really depends on the school. Especially at places like Wesleyan where the impact was already negligible, legacy status didn't have a ton of impact, but there was always a chance that that would influence a decision even minimally. So even if the chances were low, it was a possibility. With today's decision, really made a while ago but we couldn't say anything until the official announcement today, legacy status will have no effect on admissions chances for students which in my personal opinion, (separate from Wesleyan since I am not allowed to speak for them, only as myself) is a good change as we can now guarantee that admitted students are the best available students and not just bumped up because a parent attended. At other universities, such as Harvard, a large portion of their class are legacies, as you have a much higher chance of gaining admission if a family member attended. If they were to make the same decision as we did, then a whole lot more would change for them than it did us. So to fully answer your question: It's not a guaranteed admission regardless of school, but depending on the school, it could have anything from a slightly positive push to an absolutely insane level of advancement in the admissions process. But there's always a student with grades so terrible and extracurricular activities so insignificant that legacy status wouldn't get them accepted which is why I stray away from the idea that it's just a guaranteed admissions strategy, but in practice at some schools, it's practically a guarantee.

That's not going to be in anyone's favor long term. I'm sad that a kid got caught up in it because he believed he should have had admission regardless, but it's even more discerning that many of the judges making these decisions have been legacies themselves and most likely got into their schools based on who their parents knew. If anyone needs affirmative action it should be our government.

The pavement has been measured at over 140°+F and is literally hot enough to do the cliche frying of an egg. AC is a matter of being _humane_ at this point. And with as shitty and unreliable as the US justice system is on top of how crooked cops can be? So long as groups like The Innocence Project need to exist, I'm not comfortable treating all inmates like animals. There are too many in there who shouldn't be, or who received far worse sentences than their crimes warranted. But I'm sure it's easier to see the world in black and white than to acknowledge all of the gray in-between when it comes to things like our prison system.
@tearainey1 Жыл бұрын
In my mind there's a line. Prisoners did crimes, and that's why they're in prison, but the point of it should not be abject punishment for profit (most prisons are private for profit systems especially in Texas if I recall correctly). And these for profit systems utilize prison labor to bring cheap labor to the market, lining the pockets of investors, prison owners, legislatures, etc. Anyway, aside from that, prisoners are still humans (though I view any pedo's, r-pists, murderers, serial murderers, etc. to be subhuman and absolutely don't deserve comfort but that's my own opinion). The point of prison shouldn't be cruelty or delighting in torture or even arguably the slavery aspect, but rather reformation to bring these troubled petty criminals back into society with a better grasp on themselves, their futures, and with the ability to re-acclimate. Long term-lifer prisoners, I don't know. It really depends on the crime, but still, if we are to view ourselves as morally better than them shouldn't we at least afford them basic human decency in providing small comforts that keep them alive? I've had heat stress/stroke and it's not fun to go through and can be very painful. It's not something I would wish on folks in jail. Personally my own judgement is that no prison should be privately owned or for profit, any prison labor that is done should be volunteer in nature to pay for comforts or whatever and the work should be something like cleaning up highways, volunteering in soup kitchens, fire fighting, providing some sort of service to the local communities in a supervised manner. The whole system needs reformed, but unfortunately it's got so much money behind it no one's going to do a thing until it naturally rots out at its core to reveal all the disgusting hidden truths.

I try not to wish anyone harm, but there's a cadre of people high up in the state of Texas who are willing to act truly monstrously in support of their perverse ideology, and it strains my compassion and tolerance to know that these people are continued to be allowed to draw breath. With regards to states that are prosecuting people who leave the state to engage in legal behavior elsewhere, we need to start providing support systems so that people don't have to go back to that state, at least until a serious legal challenge can be mounted on the Federal level against that behavior.

With the medical records issue, I think a huge hurdle for that will be the administrative law system. As it stands right now, a person applying for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income can have their medical records subpoenaed without any probable cause of a crime because the administrative law system was built specifically to deny those seeking benefits the protections required by the Constitution to be given to those charged with crimes. They are allowed to assume guilt, fail to provide legal counsel, and even allow the administrative law judge serve as prosecution, judge, and jury. Changing how our legal system treats medical records could affect the otherwise very well insulated administrative law system and given how adamantly Congress denies action on even basic disability reforms (like allowing Americans with disabilities to get married without losing life-saving benefits), I think the administrative law system will serve as a block to this endeavor.

Not likely to see it in canada since my local theaters don't tend to have them, hoping I'm wrong. Sounds like a good premise.

Abbott approving a bill that grants air conditioning units in prisons? There's a greater chance of him being able to walk again before he does something like that.

Now that you said that, these folks need life in prison.

You got fooled by a liar (Phil). He lied to you and spread misinformation for click views. The church did not say "drink Bleach." "Chlorine" and "chlorine dioxide" are not the same formula. Google "chlorine dioxide mouth wash" and youll see it is sold in stores in mouth wash, because scientifically "chlorine dioxide" kills germs. Even the government puts chlorine dioxide in water to treat it. So did Phil say that cities said DRINK BLEACH? No. But he says this misinformation about a church (he hates because of his past), for views and to fool you. Thus he is a science denier and liar. Instead he wants to fearmonger and claim "chlorine dioxide" "is an industrial BLEACHING agent." Well duh, any chemical in 100x form can have strong effects. But again, this chemical is put in the water and mouth washes in low quantity for humans to serve a purpose that the body can handle.

Miles Power has been speaking on these mms crooks for YEARS! I hope the end of these has come, too many vulnerable people and innocent kids have suffered because of them.

I feel you man I used to run every weekend. I had a friend who used to take me running but he moved away and I just stopped. It’s really hard for me to start up again. I’m still looking for help.

When I was in HS my mother took MMS for months and collapsed one night. She was raising me on her own so it was just me and her. She almost died and it was definitely one of the toughest nights I've had in my life.

One of the 16 charged in Michigan is on our school board. I hope she gets what is coming to her. It would be nice to replace her crazyness in an election soon.

Medical records search - I NEVER thought books like 1984 and Brave New Word would have such realistic relevance. I thought they'd inspire other art and games and stories... they'd be the measure of caution, not blue prints to aim for as a goal. I shake my head every single day lately that people can't see their views and push against certain groups are EXACTLY like history they would fast say they aren't being like AND for the same excuses to oppress and hate that were given in the past. Divine right, child protection, and moral panic.
