Over the past month a number of statues of past leaders have been defaced around the world, during protests that were part of the Black Lives Matter movement.
They’ve triggered debate over the UK’s colonial history.
In the latest in our series of reports on the legacy of the British Empire, Yogita Limaye reports from India, one of the UK’s former colonies about how former British prime minister Winston Churchill is viewed by people there, particularly in relation to a deadly famine that occurred in the country during the second world war.

Compared to a world war, a famine is indeed just unpleasant. But what the British did was not discrimination. It was extermination. Bengal was the epicenter of the freedom struggle of India. The Sepoy Mutiny got ignited in Bengal. Bengal was such a problem for the British throughout its colonial history in India that they partitioned it in 1905 and then they partitioned it again in 1947. It was Bose, a Bengali who sided with the Axis Power and created an army to kill British to liberate India. Bengal produced the best minds in literature and science and other faculties in India at that time. Weakening Bengal by exterminating Bengalis was necessary part of the British war effort as exterminating Jews was a necessary part of German war effort. The most non-violent method of genocide is famine.

Australia sent tonnes of wheat on ships specifically for the Bengal Famine which Churchill had diverted. Remember Australia did this in the height of WW2 , when they had their hands full with Japan. Read up on the Madras Famine and The Great Bengal Famine of 1770 , British museums have memoirs of British Officers talking about how evil the Government was and how they were forcing the people to cannibalise their own. There was even a famine where my state was in the 1940s. Kerala is a state that's luckily been blessed with rains and fertile soil .It was a primary cause for why "soldiers" started signing up for the war cause. Kuttanad , now a very famous tourist attraction had a very high casualty rate for soldiers who signed up from there. 650+ died in this war cause and our now buried somewhere in Burma , Europe ,North Africa or the Pacific Islands. Our forefathers fought for a people that took everything from us and they are barely a footnote in history.

History is more complex than that. The Indian soldier didn't fight as much for the British Empire as he fought for his officers and to uphold the good name of his regiment. Even today the hallmark of a good officer in Indian Army is that 'An officer knows his men better than their mothers do and cares even more'. Such honourable traditions were developed by British Indian Army and have been wisely preserved and nurtured by the contemporary Indian Army. That's why Indian Army Infantry and old Armoured Regiments are among the very best in the world

Kevin Burrow that is a very good point that can be made in explaining why he is a hero. However, I think that it is quite easy for one to say that this had outweighed the bad when that person wasn’t on the receiving end of the policies of Winston Churchill and the government at the time. I’m not saying that he shouldn’t be painted as a hero. What I’m saying is that you should take facts from both sides of history into account. @jay nalawade So, by your definition, it is only the British who have ever invaded to steal and conquer. In your words (and I paraphrase), ‘we travelled to learn’. Didn’t the Maratha Empire persecute their own people? They launched six invasions of Bengal and invade Afghanistan. How about the Mughal Empire who sustained their empire by military conquest. Didn’t they also trade heavily with Europeans thus making their Empire larger and richer. Before them, didn’t the Delhi Sultanate persecute and murder across their Empire. And if we move away from the Indian sub-continent, how about all the various Chinese dynasties, the Mongol empire which stretched from Central Europe, across the Indian sub-continent and East to Japan. The Japanese invasions of China and Korea. The Ancient Egyptian Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Spanish in South and Central America, the French in Vietnam, the Germans and the Belgium’s in parts of Africa, the Dutch in Indonesia, the Romans, the Saxons and the Vikings invasions of Britain and many other places. The Moors invasions of Southern Europe, the tribal wars across Western Africa, which supplied most of the salves for the transatlantic slavery trade, the Russian empire etc etc etc. There has been hundreds of Empires across the globe. All did terrible things to gain control and maintain power. Many also did great things as well. Don’t try and paint the British as the only race to have persecuted others. As for slavery, it has existed since the beginning of civilization. Instead of spouting your ignorant nonsense and threats, why don’t you concentrate on improving modern India. How about tackling the rape epidemic sweeping the nation, or the Caste systems that protects the rapists. Just for starters. Or maybe recognize the British for some of the good they have done. For example the 20%+ of the world’s inventions and discoveries that the British are responsible for. The millions of lives saved by the discovery of penicillin by a Scottish scientist for example?

@hi-nw7qy

@Jack W I agree with that. Stuff like confederate statues in the US should mostly be put in museums because they're main representation is bad. But their Presidents are seen as good to them although they've done shady stuff like Washington owning slaves (except Andrew Jackson, fuck that guy). I think it depends on why the statue was erected and the good vs bad. In India Ghandi deserves statues because he did many great things, he also had very fucked up beliefs about certain things but the statues are not meant to signify those and as a whole he was more good than bad. Hitler did some good, he rose Germany out of poverty and made them a superpower, but he also committed genocide, as a whole he was more bad than good. As you can see I like examples lol.

The Indian Army during World War II, a British force also referred to as the British Indian Army, began the war, in 1939, numbering just under 200,000 men. By the end of the war, it had become the largest volunteer army in history, rising to over 2.5 million men in August 1945.

She doesn't need to use hyperbole. I also talk like that. If it's already clear the transactions were detrimental, it's of no benefit to to be more extreme. I like the way she put it because Churchill did do a lot to save the British but also he extorted India's resources to the point civilisation couldn't feed themselves. It's always important to look at both sides. When it came to his country Churchill was as patriotic as it could be but when it came to respecting the country that saved his own, he wouldn't dare save them due to biases he had about the Indian people of the time.

You'd be surprised how many of these people that want to take statues down know zero about history or anything about the statues they want to take down! It's all political anyway you suggest removing a statue of a left wing politician that owned slaves and you see their attitudes change rather quickly because that doesn't fit their agenda.

I'm a Sri Lankan who grew up in the UK - I knew nothing of partition or the Bengal Crisis until I started living in Asia again and met and spoke to Indian friends. In the UK we were taught about the Romans , Vikings, and WWII focusing on the Nazis and the blitz in our history lessons.. there was nothing ever mentioned about slavery or colonialism. Huge gaps in our knowledge even as a South Asian child growing up there. Desperately needs to change.
