Could there have been an objective of greater military importance and significance for the whole purpose of the war than this? They tried hard, and they were beaten back; they were frustrated in their task. We got the Army away; and they have paid fourfold for any losses which they have inflicted.
When we consider how much greater would be our advantage in defending the air above this Island against an overseas attack, I must say that I find in these facts a sure basis upon which practical and reassuring thoughts may rest. I will pay my tribute to these young airmen.The great French Army was very largely, for the time being, cast back and disturbed by the onrush of a few thousands of armored vehicles. May it not also be that the cause of civilization itself will be defended by the skill and devotion of a few thousand airmen? There never has been, I suppose, in all the world, in all the history of war, such an opportunity for youth. The Knights of the Round Table, the Crusaders, all fall back into the past-not only distant but prosaic; these young men, going forth every morn to guard their native land and all that we stand for, holding in their hands these instruments of colossal and shattering power, of whom it may be said that:
Every morn brought forth a noble chance
And every chance brought forth a noble knight,
deserve our gratitude, as do all the brave men who, in so many ways and on so many occasions, are ready, and continue ready to give life and all for their native land. Nevertheless, our thankfulness at the escape of our Army and so many men, whose loved ones have passed through an agonizing week, must not blind us to the fact that what has happened in France and Belgium is a colossal military disaster. The French Army has been weakened, the Belgian Army has been lost, a large part of those fortified lines upon which so much faith had been reposed is gone, many valuable mining districts and factories have passed into the enemy’s possession, the whole of the Channel ports are in his hands, with all the tragic consequences that follow from that, and we must expect another blow to be struck almost immediately at us or at France. We are told that Herr Hitler has a plan for invading the British Isles. This has often been thought of before. When Napoleon lay at Boulogne for a year with his flat-bottomed boats and his Grand Army, he was told by someone. “There are bitter weeds in England.” There are certainly a great many more of them since the British Expeditionary Force returned.
I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty’s Government-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.
-We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

'if necessary alone' - Churchill was a master of presenting the real world circumstances of his beloved Britain's status in the world into words.. this line still makes me shiver. Imagine knowing that all that stood between Hitler and total victory in Europe was this small island and YOU had to lead her defense. His self made belief in the fighting men in the BAF and in the wider Empire was a shining light when all those around him sought appeasement to Hitler and Mussolini. Patriotism level is over 9000.

Guys, when I made this video in 2017, I had no idea it would reach so many of you! Thanks for the views! After I had watched Dunkirk (wonderful movie btw), I realised there was something missing in the ending of the movie. I thought it would be much better if only it had been done using the voice of Churchill himself. Being no professional editor, I simply put the two audios together, played with the volume a bit and voilà, simple as that. When the thing was done, I couldn't help but notice that it fit together surprisingly well. I actually wouldn't be surprised if we learnt that the music was based on the speech itself. If you enjoy some of my other content, please consider hitting the subscribe button, it would be much appreciated!

Mit Titulken I still find myself coming back to your video every now and again, especially when feeling a little jaded, or down with my lot in life. The combination of Churchill's words with that beautiful rendition of Nimrod (Variation 15), helps me reignite the determination to pick myself up, dust myself off, and plough on through. His words are a haunting echo from a past where so many men and women had to dig deep, cling onto whatever gave them faith, and hope for a time when the world would emerge from darkness and destruction. My story is just one of Billions, and I thank you for being a small part of it. Edit: the movie is also a modern classic!

@Bro Down Of course, now I completely understand the significance. Similar to what the BBC did with the kids "educational" YT vid a couple of years ago, when they depicted an archetypal British-Roman family as having a Sub-Saharan chap as the father, white mother and mixed race kids. I remember Infowars and Paul Joseph Watson hammering them for it, but the usual freedom-hating Momentum-backed mouth pieces cried "racism!" Instead of explaining why history was literally being rewritten. It's diversity for diversity sake. Can you remember what the very useful Mehera Bonner (writing in the critically acclaimed "Marie Claire" shitrag) said about Dunkirk? Anti feminist, an excuse to praise negative masculinity, lack of cultural diversity, women only shown as victims... Blah Blah Blah. Sorry love, but when I served in the RAF and did my tours of Iraq and Afghan, blokes massively outnumbered females in frontline combat roles, so what do you think the stats regards deployment of female military personnel would be in 1940?! When I took my honourable discharge I returned to an alien country, where many of my brothers in arms had been left to drink themselves to death in shop doorways, languish in Police cells instead of mental health facilities, or string themselves up in a rancid bedsit, while the very enemy I had been protecting my country from were welcomed with open arms, receiving all the benefits I and thousands like me never did, and allowed to assimilate their own communities of hatred, hell bent on destroying the culture, values, and freedoms of the very country which gave them an all access backstage pass to British social welfare. Rant over. My apologies.
@residentelect
@residentelect 5 жыл бұрын
@Bro Down Let's just hope their are enough of the new generation whom have the courage and pride to actually want to fight for their history, culture, geography and quite possibly; their freedom. Unfortunately it looks as though we who truly love our country are vastly outnumbered. I only have to spend mere minutes on YT, and everywhere the propaganda bombardment in as heavy as ever, in the form of social media and internet porn-addicted teenagers/young adults who idolise the "professional idiots" from reality TV shows instead of respecting the true heroes working for our Emergency Services, NHS, and armed forces. Bitter, overweight feminists wishing to steamroll a man's right to existence. Proudly arm in arm with them stand the Beta cucks and soyboys who relish in blaming me, my colour and my heritage for everything negative in the world. But more rancid than any of the above, we have our supposed politic representatives; the same ones whom have just treated themselves to yet another pay rise, steering our once proud homeland into the arms of oblivion. And for what? Power, wealth and living outside the boundaries of our laws. Who will be here left to fight when all of the above have taken to their knees and reciprocated?

@Bro Down Man... This.conversation is more relevant than ever. All Hail King Michael of Farage! He wiped out the Tories thanks to their appalling handling of Brexit, and Labour was easily routed thanks to Comrade Corbin planting his Stalinist Arse firmly on the fence, hoping to eventually jump onto whoever wins out between Hard Brexit V Second Referendum. A higher voter turnout than ever before, the three main political parties spanked by a fringe group created only two months prior to the election, and despite the propaganda spewed out by the Biased Broadcasting Corporation, Brexiteers outvoted (once again) Remoaners. Why didn't Remain win out on the day? Because despite their supporters (being huge advocates of Democracy), the vast majority are lazy middle/upper class students and lecturers, immigrants (including illegal ones) so called activists and influencers, and benefit cheats, couldn't be arsed to either register to vote, or leave the comfort of the sofa and familiar safety of daytime television to actually cast their vote! The above being a perfect example of how the majority of Left Wing Remain supporters just "expect" things to happen... Like how they expect their benefits to just magically appear in their bank accounts, the Bank of Mum & Dad to pay their phone bills, rent and loans, don't take pride in their community because someone else will clean it up, or actually bother to protest against the true evils and injustices which exist in this world, as it's far easier to hate proud Britons who wish to safeguard their heritage for future generations of Britons. We who now demand our Brexit are relishing the opportunity to roll up our sleeves, get stuck in, work hard, and regain a sense of national pride and respect for ourselves, which if we continued to be shamelessly milked by the EUSSR wouldn't happen. Apologies for the rant lol #nosecondreferendum

Gives me chills every time. Might be the greatest speech of all time. Thank God for Churchill. He was the leader the British needed at that time. He was the only man for the job. Thank God for the British army as well. Those men were some hard bastards. It’s truly incredible what they did in thwarting Hitler’s plans of invading Britain...especially when you consider they were the only ones capable of fighting back, and for a long time they were the only ones that did. Their heroic sacrifice will always be remembered.

Glory to our brothers and sisters who fell in battle; We can never understand the magnitude of their sacrifice. Thanks to them we had the opportunity to live and I am saddened by what we are doing to the planet and in this society that we have become; without honor, or love for our neighbor or respect for the country. All those who wish to dispel this legacy is because they do not know the meaning of sacrifice. It is our responsibility to remember and honor our heroes; because they fought in the hills, they fought in the sea, they fought in the air and they never surrender.

Britain has been lost,gone forever from which it once was,but we should be proud that we were once set an example of a Britain such as this. A beautiful brotherhood encapsulated in time for eternity for us all to see.The British people of the 2nd World War were the last of the Great British.The English,Irish,Scottish and Welsh all fought and died together. Rest in peace,our generations of Britains shall be long forgotten,but they shall stand proud in time together....forever.

With this scene, while it shrinks the heart, one can understand what Spirit of Dunkirk means. The resistance and, over the time, superiority that Britain showed until the end of the storm started there, in Dunkirk. June 40. Dunkirk was the end for many and the beginning for many others. But above all it was the beginning of Hitler's end. The way in which this event reinforced, illuminated and united the spirit of every child, girl, man, woman, grandfather and British grandmother, will rubricate in memory forever. One of those people who crossed, unconditionally, the canal with their summer and fishing boats was my great grandfather.

The fact that Churchill had a speech impediment and yet is known as one of the greatest orators of all time should be a lesson to us all that we should not allow our inadequacies hold us back, and that ultimately it is talent courage and the substance of our words that count.

We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the new world, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old." 🌄🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

its a shame people are now attacking this man, attacking the memory of a person who saved our country and the world from control of the true axis of evil, Churchill was a flawed leader but he was a leader we needed right when we needed him, he stood his ground and brought Britain from the brink of destruction, he seen the threat that nazi germany posed to the world, he was the first to call for arms against the true enemy, Churchill I like many others Salute you.

Churchill certainly has his flaws. He was adamantly against independence for Britain's colonies and he wasn't a fan of Gandhi. But he was the leader Britain needed at a time when Nazi tyranny seemed invincible. And in that sense, this man played a part in saving democracy.

There is a CD entitled, "His Finest Hour", speeches of Winston Churchill. Has many excerpts from his best speeches, including this one, which runs for 12 minutes on the CD. He had a very pronounced lisp, which was typical in the British upper-classes. It irks me no end when I read German-Nazi-fanboys say he was a drunk, and must've been drunk when he made this and other speeches. This speech is long and with many complex sentences. No one who was drunk could've made this speech. But, they persist in trying trying to defend fascism. At the end of this speech where he insists that they will carry on the struggle "if necessary for years, if necessary alone", makes me cry each time I hear it. "The British Empire armed and guarded by the British Fleet will carry on , until in God's good time the New World with all it's power and might comes forth to the rescue and liberation of the old".
