Excellent explanation of something that is rarely discussed. I recall during my earlier Kenpo years in competition, I was taught to watch the midsection of the body. If I saw my opponent do the same, that meant I could feign a movement, not with my hand or foot, but my body. However, no one ever spoke about the different speeds. As I started studying Aikido, the same, it was never discussed...thank you

My sensei only taught me that natural distance in aikido is one and half step. But he doesn't explain it as detail as yours. Thanks for the detail. I never thought aikido need distancing training cause it's not a fighting martial art but I was wrong all this time, distancing is indeed the most important(correct me if I'm wrong).

You are right, when contact is an issue distancing is always important. I believe in Aikido distancing is very important BECAUSE it's not a fighting art. Thanks for your comments.

So are you you saying that at long range, no one can close the gap? How would they close the gap - say in a boxing match? Good video

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking.

間合.....it's why most Aikido is useless in a fight. People ignore this basic concept and allow a would-be attacker inside their ma-ai.
