Very interesting document - Born with the Caul version of this was recorded about 8 months later which maybe explains why this rendition feels more exploratory, feeling out the structure - more chord building and not so much solo-ing on top by Cian vs the finished article - and of course no verse!

Because there is viola? In comparison to the Dirty Three, the structure and style is far more open, less "alternative" or post-punk, less trying to be avant (i.e. jumping around, screaming, and going out), and has a choogle quality (that sort of Grateful Dead drive that Garcia Peoples and Endless Boogie are all about). To my ears, I hear Sandy Bull (reminiscent of Electric Blend), some Ali Akbar Khan (definitely some raga tones going on here) and Trad Gras Och Stenar (with Trad being the most close comparison -- as this reminds me of Ragatroll). For modern vibes, this sounds very similar to Ryley Walker (as far as what he was doing in 2015ish), Elkhorn, and the Gunn Truscinsko Duo. Interesting they all reach that same type of style on their own.
