My friend owned a vineyard and said the wild turkeys could fly/hop in and eat a literal ton of wine grapes in a matter of days. Better they eat cicadas.

Yes, they will eat grapes. They are opportunists. Netting, fencing, watch dog, scare tape are all ways to protect garden plants. Hopefully your friend has lots of cicadas this year!
