I remember being in Junior HS and my dad taking me to watch the 83 and 84 CIF championships at Cerritos college....little did I know I was watching history!

I remember watching those guys that year, amazing talent. Danny Harris went on to end Edwin Moses streak of 122 consecutive 400m hurdles victories in 1987.

I spent the Spring of 1983 watching the back of Danny's jersey when being defeated by him multiple times in what the CIF used to call the "300 meter LOW hurdles." Danny held the Men's Junior World Record (athletes under age 19) for the 400 meter hurdles from 1984 all the way up until 2021.

Henry’s split at the Texas Relays (44.5) in early April of ‘85, still remains the stuff of legend.

In high school? He ran that kind of time?
@brentwilliams71223 жыл бұрын
@@demetriusdougar4129 yes. Roy Martin split 44.6 trying to catch him. Hawthorn went to Texas to face Martin texas squad. Hawthorn won a set a national record. Henry Thomas also ran a open 45.01 400m in high school. In this race is 400m world champ Danny Harris anchoring for 2nd place Perris. I believe Kevin Young, Danny Everrett and Flo Jo we're also running in this meet.

That was Danny Harris from Perris chasing Hawthorne's Henry Thomas before Henry pulled it out. The following year Harris won a Silver Medal in the Olympics in the 400H behind a guy named Edwin Moses.

The 3rd leg for Hawthorne won this race. Two legends on anchor. If Perris wouldn't have been disqualified in the 4×100 the previous meet at the Masters, these 2 teams would have been in another epic battle. This is the best 4×4 two team battle in Ca. History. At the time the 2 times were #2&3 in National history behind the Berkeley team several years earlier.

Didn't Henry's CA high school 100 m record stand for like 20+ years? And then only tied by some kid from long beach?

In high school, Henry Thomas was one of the greatest sprinters of all-time! His credentials speak for themselves. 10.25, 20.4 (and an FAT 20.69) and a blazing 45.09. If he had not gotten injured in May of ‘85 (his senior year) I believe he would have dipped under 45 seconds.

Would have been really interesting to see the 84 Hawthorne team, who still currently holds the prep record at 3:07.40, against the 81 Berkeley team, who ran 3:08.94 completely not pushed after the first leg.
@johnSmith-no2wi8 жыл бұрын
That was certainly a great team Berkeley had that year with Ken Robinson and Pete Richardson, who's 1:47.31 for 800m still stands I believe and Hawthorne with the great Henry Thomas and future Olympic Gold medalist Mike Marsh, that would have been a great race. I've been to most of the California masters meets since 1970 and that 1981 meet is still my favorite
