I can answer this fairly quickly even tho I am watching the whole video. Play the one that speaks to your inner child. Most likely its the one you started with. For me it was Sonic Adventures DX on the Gamecube and the memories that game gave me live on to this day.

Why is this pinned? Vanilla SADX is a terrible version of the game. This is such a weird way to justify settling for less. It's simply a bad idea given the alternatives. Anybody with even a passing interest in SA1 should play the PC version with mods to restore the stuff that got butchered in the port. Or, if 30fps is acceptable, to just emulate the Dreamcast original. If I stuck with vanilla SADX as my go-to way to play, I'd appreciate the game way less than I do now.

Nah I'm a play close as the original vision with the extra content and some fixes from the newer release. I grew up with the og 2004 pc port btw lol but nowadays I only play dreamcast or a heavily modded pc steam version. Same with heroes grew up with the pc port I play the gamecube version nowadays because it's less janky especially the rival battles.

I grew up with first SADX PC port, and when I bought Dreamcast 15 years later, it felt like I was playing remake without all bugs, better graphics and really impressive visuals. Sadly most people think Adventure 1 was bad because of that port, and they are not wrong because that was official way to play on modern hardware.

Here's another one: despite the neat lighting engine that the original uses, it is often used poorly, such as in areas that are supposed to be in broad daylight (like the Mystic Ruins entrance) being dimly lit.

I actaully grew up with the Dreamcast version first (got one at a yard sale and it had both SA1 and 2 with it); didn't have access to a Game Cube when it was out. When I got the chance to play DX on a friend's GC I was flabbergasted, this was nothing like what I remembered and everything felt wrong.

Also grew up with the Dreamcast version and I thought I was tripping balls at how bad everything looked and how loose the controls felt. The only good thing that the ports brought was an entirely unintended set of "new" Chao colors (because there's weird glitches when you go deep enough into Chao breeding with the colors and messed up transparencies and mirror effects).

Sometimes it can feel negligible depending on the game, but SA1 is a pretty good example of "This game didn't actually look or play as bad or old as you remember, the newer versions just don't look or play like the original version"

Why I don't like the SA1 Dreamcast Chao system. 1. I don't like the gardens. Station Square garden is okay but Mystic Ruins garden has this stupid glitch which made the Chao spawn in unreachable areas like inside the giant rock forcing you to exit and re-enter hoping they'll spawn somewhere else. Also there's no invisible barrier to stop you from jumping over the fence to your death. Egg Carrier garden is the worst of all the water is way too deep aside from the mentioned issues in the video of drowning or the chao being unreachable if they swim too far out but animals half the time go in the water and fall down past a point where they cannot be reached thereby completely wasting them due to animals in this version vanish regardless if already given to a Chao or not when exiting a garden. 2. The deal that half of the stuff to properly raise chao requires a working VMU like naming, viewing the stats and obtaining all the other special fruits. Like couldn't they at least done where picking a chao up their stats appear on the VMU screen in your controller? Also its impossible to get a Chao's stats to a decent level without a VMU because their life span is far shorter on DC then in DX and animals do not raise the stats nowhere near as fast as they do on DX so its the VMU fruits you want to be feeding them (and Chao don't die when in the VMU). 3. The terrible HP stat. So unlike future releases where feeding Chao fruit raises Stamina and chao die or reincarnate at the end of their life depending on their Happiness stat which is down to if you were nice or abusive to it. In SA1 DC Chao have a HP stat which is what keeps a chao alive. This stat is constantly depleting and if it reaches zero the chao dies regardless of how young or old it is or how nice you were to it. You had to constantly feed them fruits to keep their HP replenished. So they can just die at any time. Even if you get a chao to reincarnate its HP still depletes while its reincarnating and in the egg so there's a chance a reincarnated chao will hatch with zero HP making it die instantly upon hatching. This even makes Chaos Chao useless as they also can die if their HP hits zero unlike in DX where they are truly immortal. The chao are also way too fragile as hit them a little too many times by accident and they will die because hitting them depletes HP faster. Even the damn fruits when they fall from trees can hurt them! 4. There's a bug which causes time to pass in all 3 gardens even though time is only supposed to pass in the garden you are currently in. I've had chao evolve, die or reincarnate without seeing them going into cocoons because I was in another garden. Combined with the above mentioned depleting HP stat spend too long in one garden and your chao in the other gardens are most likely going to die because you didn't feed them in time 5. The Chao are far more annoying and they throw those annoying tantrums you know the ones where they're on their back flailing around because they're hungry far more often then they do in DX. They'll do it like every 5-10 minutes if you aren't feeding them every 3 minutes. Sometimes they'll do this the instant they hatch! It gets annoying really fast combined with the sounds of their crying which is also annoying to the extent i've lost my patience at times and hit them.

I wish there was a more extensive list of Chao World differences outside of a few textures. Additionally, a number of documented differences were skipped over like Mystic Ruins garden having shallower water (in fact you could drown in it as Tails) and Station Square having a skyline for DX. Other differences you forgot to mention: A number of animal ear models got changed to textures for DX, like the elephant and gorilla ears. Jewel Chao changing colours between DC and DX. Most notably gold went from a lime green to a more yellow colour. Bright Chao in the PC port due to a lighting bug. There are other anomalies regarding promotional artwork, such as Chao in Space featuring a Chao that has an unused mouth. 1:45:46 shows a very odd looking neutral fly Chao that has a lot longer horns as well as strange wings you can never get in the game.

something worth mentioning that i always see neglected in sadc vs sadx is that the "dreamcast version" everyone always praises isn't the original version of the game either, it's the international version released a year later with several bug fixes. the original japanese dreamcast release while having many of the visual advantages of the international release, shares many of the bugs with dx in addition to its own bugs that even dx fixed, because, well, dx was built off the 1998 release, not international. of course, this doesn't excuse dx, there wasn't any reason they couldn't have based it on international nor does it explain the visual bugs and changes (some could still be explained as simple artistic choices or the gamecube being incapable of replicating the more intricate effects of the dreamcast, but still, many things were made worse for no good reason and changing the artstyle period was unnecessary, regardless of if you prefer it or not) that being said, it's not an uncommon thing for games of that era. for one reason or another, a lot of remasters and ports back then would be based on the original releases of games instead of updated patched versions. to dx's credit, the extra content and quality of life fixes are nice, mission mode isn't a game changer but it's there if it interests you, the game gear collection was a nice way to get those games on gamecube and the emulation was perfectly acceptable for the time, metal sonic is a nice bonus, and most importantly, the ability to skip the cutscenes and the sa2b-based chao garden do a lot of heavy lifting towards making sadx definitive when it comes to features. carrying over the dc dlc is the only thing that was a missed opportunity but at the same time, so much of it was time sensitive that it would have been weird from a casual player's standpoint. either way you play it, though, sa1 is sa1. don't let the purists mislead you- for as many ways the international version is better, there are ways it is worse, and the bottom line is that every version of sa1 has old game jank, graphics that don't hold up on modern displays (i'm sorry but most people who just wanna play the game aren't going to break out an old tv with special cables), poorly animated cutscenes, etc. if you don't like sadx for these aspects, the dreamcast version is almost certainly not going to change your mind. to the casual player playing it for the first time, your choice is going to come down to a prettier, if still dated looking game, or a game with more content that's more accessible. of course, i write this all in the context of official means to play the game. sonic fans have done awesome work in making it so we don't have to compromise. the only correct answer for playing sa1 casually these days is the steam version with mods to fix most of the issues and your choice of graphical quirks. don't play vanilla sadx, don't even play international, unless you quite literally don't have the option to play it modded, there's no reason to even bother compromising your experience. the best version is right there, you just need to do a bit of extra setup.

R.I.P. Mirrors in Dead Rising Remaster I think it just comes down to lack of adaptability. Programming in the 90’s was fast and loose and required a lot of “tricks” so when they approached challenges like reflections and transparency they kind of just made it work. Modern developers apply the UE5 reflection model and if that causes issues they have no choice but to just disable it. The systems are just far too complicated to jerry rig a solution now.

Yeah I used t the Better SADX mod a long time ago. It's really a shame that the port to modern systems didn't even have widescreen support by default. There's literally Dreamcast emulators that let you do that.

Sonic Adventure is probably my favourite game of all time. I had the 2004 PC port as a kid, and it was a huge part of my formative years both as a person and a gamer. Growing up, I got the Gamecube version and I always wondered why when I got Sonic Adventure DX that some stuff looked not as how I'd remembered from all the times I played the Dreamcast version and how the Gamecube version was buggier than I remembered Dreamcast version being. I do prefer the newer models, though, from the DX version. I didn't have a Dreamcast growing up, but I did play Sonic Adventure on it many times at the Kisoks in stores (Sears, Target, etc) while my mom was shopping when I was growing up.

The DC had some tech, people though it was shit. Did you know that DC renders it's graphics at a higher resolution than the PS2 and downsamples it in order to reduce jagged edges. The PS2 uses the workaround of strange resolutions and terrible video output to smooth out the overall poor quality.

You know that Both games of SADX and the Dreamcast has different physics when but it looks downgraded to the DC Version which there's a Bug when you try to walk near to the two Loop in in Emerald Coast, Sonic will cliped through ground while shakes in Place, and he will Die... personally i grew up with the dreamcast version and don't really care all that much about visuals. do i prefer the dreamcast lighting? predictably so. but it's the same game in the end. ...mostly. my only real problem with SADX (specifically the pc versions) are the gameplay bugs from it being a port of a port. this version also being the only easily accessible version of the game nowadays also disappoints me. i wish they would sell both versions on steam, or even just fix the bugs.

Sadly even SADX is becoming inaccessible to many. The console versions were made for PS3 and 360, both of which only had digital versions. That's a problem because both online stores are reaching EOL. When that happens the Steam version is the only one left. Really sucks even ports haven't been coming.

@@Skylancer727 SADX is still available on the xbox series x digital store, if i remember correctly, so it's not completely lost. unfortunately the series x's 360 emulator *also* has a ton of bugs so it's even worse than before lol i really do wish they would start porting games other than the classic titles to newer hardware, too. emulation is always an option, but it's inaccessible to a majority of casual gamers and alienates a large portion of people who would possibly love the game if it were only available more easily.

Another jarring thing about DX not mentioned in the video is that Tikal and Eggman were the only NPCs to get new models. The other NPCs all use their Dreamcast models which look awkward as hell next to the upgraded playable character models. The Steam version also omits the unlockable Game Gear games although that can be restored with mods.

If it's between the DC or GC, it's GC all day. Great multiplayer, some of the cutscenes play more appropriate music to add intensity (look at the scene where Shadow confronts rouge), more fleshed out glitches/better chao system, and the character models and finishing poses look a lot better on SA2B.

Pretty neat video overall, I must say. Did watch it during a move however, but it was worth it. Oh yea, I also took the Forces screenshot shown at 40:12. The reason why Modern Sonic was shown in a classic stage waa due to a mod, alongside the free camera which was used to move him in front of the water. The error is much more difficult to notice in normal gameplay as the camera angle compensates for this. Also wanted to share my history with Sonic Adventure. The first version I played, was admittedly the GameCube version (was my first 3D Sonic game alongside SA2B), back in late 2016/early 2017. While I did find it fun, I otherwise didn't really think about it much at the time. Towards the end of 2017, I had learned about the Dreamcast Conversion mods, so I went ahead and got the game through Steam (immediately after I had pre-ordered Sonic Forces. In fairness I *was* 15 at the time and was still fairly new to the series). All I have to say is that my thoughts on the game would improve immensely, and to this day it remains one of my favorite games in the series. Would also end up getting the PS3 version as well, but beyond that I haven't played vanilla DX since. The PS3 menu theme it came with is pretty cool though, gotta admit. (Also I wanted to add that SEGA of China did the X360/PS3/Steam ports. That branch also ported its sequel to the same platforms in 2012) And then I'd eventually get an actual Dreamcast in 2020, and play the original version of Sonic Adventure on it. (Would eventually receive a Dreamcast copy of Adventure 2 in early 2022 as a late Christmas present). So nowadays, my preferred way to play it tends to still be the PC version with Dreamcast mods. But if my Dreamcast is hooked up, then I'll play the Adventure duology on that too.

1:24:24 Is it? The Dreamcast release runs at 30 FPS with the fog while DX runs at 60 without it. If it was originally put in for performance reasons, it's totally irrelevant now.

I’ve had the privilege of playing all three. Dreamcast version was my first game ever as a kiddo, then, one day, the console stopped being able to read the disc, and we never figured out why (I recall we tried cleaning/repairing the disc and so I always assumed it was a hardware issue? But looking back now, it seems more than likely it was damage to the disc and my parents just opted to gaslight us kids about it than buy a new copy and give me and my siblings more reasons to spend more time playing video games/fight over taking turns). So I pleaded to get the Gamecube just for the SA1/2 ports, then years later bought the PC Steam ports in college when I randomly missed the games and wanted to get into the Chao garden modding scene, lol. 1:19:00 I think I may have a theory about this, just from sheer observation and a lot of memories resurfacing thanks to the comparisons. I’d want to see more level comparisons in motion to confirm, but I get the feeling that changes like this were made in order for players to more easily be able to read what’s happening onscreen and react when Sonic’s going full speed. Less visual detail means less for the eye to have to process when it’s all zipping by, changes in palette and textures were made so Sonic is more easily differentiated from the background and the player never has to question where shadows on the character end and shadows in the background begin (especially since the loss in lighting on the character model means that Sonic is more consistently a shade of blue that nothing else in the environment is). I noticed in Sky Deck and Lost World as well that there’s a certain… _something_ in the lighting + fog effects that much more readily convey depth and distance of far away objects so the player’s eye isn’t getting lost in the background when they need to focus on what’s readily ahead of them. I’d bet that this is why some changes in areas like Twinkle Park’s opening portion were made too, to be less overwhelming to the eye. Now that I’ve noticed these comparisons, it may make for a really interesting project to do more in-depth analysis of how these choices in design affect the overall experience beyond technical complexity or aesthetic preference! Might file that one away for later.

sa DX on the gamecube was my first sonic game actually, and while it has a special place in my heart. "and my shelf" now days I can appreciate a lot that was lost in the original dreamcast version more.

Ice Cap also has one of the ramps moved to accommodate one of the challenges in mission mode. If you mod the PC to restore it to the original, this mission becomes impossible the traditional way using the 3 ramps to trick off.

Great video, even though this stuff definitely isn't news to me, I always love a good breakdown of niche Sonic minutiae. Thanks! While we're talking about SA1, apparently SA1 & 2 are being delisted from digital storefronts in Germany and Italy next month, along with a slew of other retro Sega games worldwide (SA1 & 2 are actually notable for being among the games in this group *not* being delisted in the USA, for example, while a bunch of other Sega games are). Sega only really seems to delist games when they have future plans related to the games they're delisting, so one can't help but wonder if they intend to re-release all of the above games in some new form soon. Whatever they do, hopefully it's better than the junk ports they had before!

The GameCube version was so badass as a kid. To me as a 6-7 year old kid it had so much depth and gameplay. I liked how you could roam around and each character had their own unique abilities like flight or weapons, and of course speed. It was always cool to find something new. It felt like a huge game. So freakin nostalgic. I still have my copy and hoping I can get a GameCube soon to play it again. Idc what people say this was so awesome back in the early 2000’s. Even better than the sonic games on Xbox. I later played the Dreamcast version when a kid at my babysitter brought it over and enjoyed that just as much. Of course to me the GameCube version was the best.

Yeah I don't think the lighting is why people say this is a bad game. The levels and the missions therein are just... not very good? Not fun? People who defend this game always say "Sure, playing as Amy or Big is miserable but if you just ignore their bits, aka half the game, there's something REALLY good here!" Likewise, the camera is terrible. So many sections of the game are automated and the camera just does whatever it wants, making just moving around extremely disorienting. Speaking of, in the very first level, you can just break the game. Theres a loop-the-loop that, if you touch the analog stick at all during Sonic's run animation, he just goes flying. This was infamously part of the Game Grumps' playthrough, and people got mad at *them* for calling this out. HUH??? No, this is actually so easily replicable. Why would anyone assume control has been completely taken away in this section and that you're not supposed to move the stick. How is it not a demerit for the game to be unable to handle the very natural desire to want to move while going around on a loop-the-loop. The player is not the problem for the game doing that shit. Sonic fans are the greatest gaslighters, man. They act like it's nit humanly possible to dislike a game and come up with every excuse in the book, all the mental gymnastics to pretend like anyone disliking these games is some sort of psyop by KZbinrs who are too mean, or, I guess the lighting of ports of Sonic Adventure. Hate to break it to you, but the Dreamcast version of the game having a temple that pulsates orange instead of being a flat orange doesn't make the game any better. The worst part of it, the gameplay, isn't much changed between versions, now is it?

What each version says about you Dreamcast: You're a retro gamer and played the New Year's DLC before the new century begins. Gamecube: You're a Nintendo player, but you still enjoy the blue hedgehog. You still wish it made it to Switch though PC: You're a hardcore gamer, and play the games like they would on either the Dreamcast or Gamecube via downloaded mods. No matter what version you choose, you are still a big fan of the blue blur. One may have grown up from either a Dreamcast or Gamecube and got to experience it again on PC. Play whatever version as no matter what console or PC you use, you are still supporting the Sonic franchise in anyway.

TBH I’m familiar with the DX version and I don’t have any issues with it and I never encountered any bugs or glitches when I played it on PC so yeah I’ll stick with the pc version instead

You can mod the PC version if you're ever interested in experiencing the game a different way, from small bug fixes and tweaks to full conversions that make it exactly like the Dreamcast version. So technically, with the PC port you have the version that can be every version!

I mean no matter what you should still use mods on PC as the game by default doesn't support wide screen. At that point you can toggle between DC and DX settings in most mod loaders so you can just try both and see which you like. Like he showed you can even mix things like the new models and old textures, new models and textures with old lighting, etc.

@yousefslimani99 I used a mod called Better SADX that started by replacing all audio files in the game, though I don't know if it does that anymore. That version I used was really old and now requests you download a new mod loader instead. I don't know if does the same thing since I already had the old patch. I will say that mod was pretty painless. I even saw the new mod loader doesn't even need to know your folder location, it finds it on it's own and even linked immediately for SA2 as well.

Sonic Adventure really was much better-looking than DX, but I can think of ONE thing DX did better - the Mystic Ruins waterfall (1:33:58). Looks much much better in DX, but ONLY the Gamecube version. I actually made a mod for the PC version 10-ish years ago that fixes the PC version's bright water, but it still doesn't look as good as the Gamecube version. Oh, and I think the chao gardens are better in DX, especially Station Square. I made a mod to fix the water in the PC version of those too, about 10 years ago. That's about it.
