Golden Kamuy will always be underrated because there was a single CGI bear in the third episode. They never used CGI again but too many people stopped watching.

A lot of ppl in comments are saying the reasons like "budget" or "animators left" but the main reason it happened was bcoz there was only 1 animator who did almost every single fight scene from the initial episodes. That one animator was the director of this anime Sunghoo park. He left mappa after his contract ended and founded EH productions to make his own anime. Since this was the studio's first major project, they didn't have many "sakuga" animators. In fact they only had 1 sakuga animator and he was Sunghoo park himself. That man is a beast and he animated almost half of JJK s1's action scenes and most of God of highschool fights. He is a cheat code of an animator, if you got him on your production, he will animate more than half of ur fights. But that's the thing, no matter how good of an animator someone is, he cannot carry entire production on his back alone. You need at least 2-3 more sakuga animators but Ninja kamui didn't. Park did most of the action but probably realised midway through production that this ain't gonna work out, so they decided to bring in Mech and CGI so that Park's workload would lessen. And as a result we got this. Money wasn't an issue here, Its just that the new studio just did not have many connections or animators. Before this park was at mappa and mappa has TONS of action sakuga animators. Eh productions has close to none.

Here's some context if anyone needs it: Sunghoo Park is the Director behind shows like God of Highschool, Garo Vanishing line, and of course, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and it's movie. After the JJK projects, Park decided to start his own studio and began working on his new project, Ninja Kamui. Park specializes in Action, which was why the first 3 episodes (especially the first) looked so good. The reason it fell off so badly was due to the lack of people working on the project. Ninja Kamui was basically Sunghoo Park trying to solo an entire anime. There were only a few other animators on board along with another studio that specializes on CGI, which was why CGI was so prevalent in this anime. TLDR: Ninja Kamui failed because it was pretty much Sunghoo Park trying to solo the whole project due to the lack of people working on it.

The reason why the animation got really bad was because the team doing it only had one guy who knew how to do 2d animation for fights The rest of the team only knew 3D and had no experience with fighting animation So when the one guy doing this eventually had to take a break the only people left to do it was the people who only knew 3D They even had to ask in other animators to help and those only did a few scenes that only lasted a few seconds

From what I looked up, Ninja Kamui's production was a ticking timebomb! They had almost no key animators. Many if not most of the great hand to hand combat scenes were done by ONE PERSON. Now, that one person is a legend, but even a legend cannot hold the burden of an entire anime production alone. Eventually, they ran out of time and had to improvise mediocre 3D-models. Even in the scene at 4:14, which is later into the anime, signs of a rushed schedule are clearly visible. The characters are frequently off-model and movements seem unnatural. Throughout the later episodes, you can observe the consequences of taking on a project of scale that your team is not prepared for. Not that they didn't have great people working there! You can see their talent in the early episodes. But as far as I'm aware, they just didn't have ENOUGH people. And that is sad, because the first few episodes held such great promise.

The reason for this is because the fight scenes were really all this show had going for it considering that there is no story, no philosophy, the characters are extremely one dimensional and character development is nonexistent, which doesn't make it very hard to focus on the two things that people believe ruined the fight scenes. Thing is I can forgive the mechs and I can forgive the CGI IF the CGI was good. The issue is the CGI was clearly only there for budget reasons rather than artistic reasons, so its usage felt uninspired and generic. Pretty much every fight scene after episode 3 was hard to watch because of this. (Btw I didn't like the Zai vs Higan fight scene either, but that's for different reasons.)

I know it's just humor but I consider very curious that some people really think one anime is "peak" just for some action scenes in place of the plot, the world building and characters development over the episodes. Some peak anime barely has action.

good example would be vinland saga seasons 1 and 2. both peak, for very different reasons one is jampacked with action the other is about the main character finding his ways back to being a good human being
