CIMMYT’s Director General Dr. Bram Govaerts will present the non-profit international research organization’s 2030 Strategy Science and Innovation for a Food and Nutrition Secure World, which lays out core research objectives and supporting practices for achieving climate resilient, sustainable and inclusive agricultural development. In addition, Govaerts will give an overview of some of CIMMYT’s current wheat research activities, including breeding strategies for increased climate resilience, genetic predictive breeding, remote sensing, nutritional content, and disease early warning systems. He will also touch upon breeding trends for opportunity crops, such as groundnut, millet, pigeon pea, amaranth, sesame, and other nutritious dryland crops. CIMMYT’s work contributes to transform farming systems and to address global challenges confronting smallholder and resource-constrained farmers in the global south. Govaerts will share thoughts on how rewriting new science frontiers around crop breeding and adopting innovative approaches to transform production systems also generate spillover and direct benefits for Australia’s wheat research and value chain.
