Not only was this ~`THE GAME`~ that cemented Kenyon as the "Player Of The Year"......but it also was/is Dickie V's best UC game announced. I could go as far as to say that it was the best I ever heard him "bring it" in that last 9 minutes. Dickie V : "He's Super - Scintillating - and Sensational. He is Marvelous - Magnificent and Magical." I mean....you write freeking scripts that say stuff like that. Ha! 😆 All said in reference to what he was beholding that night. Like he said himself "it's the greatest fifteen minutes I have seen from a player when his teams back is against the wall." I love Dickie V and I really enjoyed seeing him at The Shoemaker Center all those years. Great Memories! Thanks to 513 for the upload. That rocked.👏👏👏👏👏👏👍

Have been thinking about this game ever since my dad and I were at it. Man, I loved that DePaul team. Hunter a project at 7ft, Simmons able to pivot and bump like Barkley, McPherson being the athletic freak of nature with the biggest calves on Earth, and Q Rich as a pure city baller. Kenyon Martin was a beast to behold. Knew there was something special id forgotten about this game and I think it was that half court heave that didn’t count. Simply a dominant performance by Martin. 19 years later and I still get upset about his season ending injury. They were a lock to win a national title.
@bradlewis65144 жыл бұрын
There has never or will probably ever be as significant an injury in the history of March Madness! Altering of a tournament field doesn't even begin to describe what Martin going down did to Cincinnati's team chemistry! The Bearcats were the only team, when on and completely healthy, capable of beating Michigan St! I'm a die-hard Duke fan and even I was pissed when Kenyon got hurt! Our youth wasn't gonna advance us very far and it eventually didn't, but I've always been a Bob Huggins fan and I wanted them to win it! Best team in America by far and bad luck screwed them

The rest of the bracket should have exhaled the biggest sigh of relief there is! Because it would have been Beware of the Bearcats otherwise!

@@bradlewis6514 Indeed dude. Like you said "above" And Eric above you. That was "one of those seasons" wherein (honestly) there was the University of Cincinnati Bearcats and *THEN* everyone else. They played at such an elite level that season......that March Madness was basically a tournament amongst all the other teams to see "who got *FED* to Cincinnati" in the National Championship Game. I'm 57 years old now and even then, I had never witnessed a season wherein, barring a Plane Crash carrying the UC team.....or unbeknownst to us all.....Kenyon going down. That was the *only* thing stopping that team from bringing the trophy back to Clifton. It sucked. It still sucks. Until this day and the rest of my life, I can say without a doubt, that *NO SPORTING INJURY TO A PLAYER* EVER affected me *OR* an *entire* city like it did that afternoon Kenyon went down. I've often wondered, here and there over the years, if Kenyon ever realized how much he actually meant to us Bearcat fans? Who knows.

I remember watching this game on TV. I kind of forgot how amazing this was because of UCs early tournament exits back then. He was a really good pro player also.

Yeah. I remember reading some fantastic article about this game.....there were quite more than a typical game. But the writer said something like "the perfect trap was laid. We had them at the tiny Rosemont." I remember yearssss after this game, hearing Bob on the radio show explaining how tough it was to beat DePaul in that specific gym. I don't know UC's w/l record there, but as a UC fan (back then) I knew it was going to be a dogfight against them and I knew they were tougher in the Rosemont....or seemingly they were.

I *still* haven't seen it, dude!!! Why I (and others) haven't, is because it *has NEVER happened!!!* Not like *that.* Not on *BOTH* sides of the ball. hahaa! That is why Dickie V won some kind of award because of this game. Dickie V (as everyone knows) would "bring it"......especially a nationally televised game (like that was.) But even Dickie V took it to a different level as Kenyon took over. Because *he had NEVER WITNESSED it before!* *lol* He even said that himself in this PERFECT CLIP of something most will never ever see again. I know *I had never seen anything like that.* My Dad said he had never witnessed anything like it, that's saying something. In *any* sport. When your team is getting clobbered, it's back is against THE WALL. In an opposing gym. Nationally Televised. #1 team in the country. It literally took Huggs to call a timeout and threaten *any player* (on the offensive side of the ball) - - that if they shot the ball *before* Kenyon could touch it......he was going to bench them and they weren't playing again! hahaa! It was an incredible enough display to watch it from the offensive end, everything the fella did. But DePaul was so far ahead and UC was *also* playing against the clock and DePaul was taking the air out of the ball, that was a HUGE MISTAKE, they got tentative and as Cincinnati chipped away at the lead - - - *lolol*- - - you could see it in the PLAYER'S FACES of DePaul......you could see it on their entire coaching staff hahaa! - - - and lastly and what was cracking me and my boys up......was that you could see it on the faces of their fans!!!! Look at them during timeouts. hahaa! It just happened to be "one of those nights," wherein as a Bearcats fan (I'm just speaking for myself here) *I JUST KNEW!!!!!* I KNEW UC was going to win, I knew that team.....it took *everything* to go absolutely PERFECT for DePaul and *EVERYTHING* to go "not normal" for Cincinnati, for DePaul to have built the lead that they had. That game was like a Hollywood Movie Script, UC's entire season was. THAT year it was. You just *KNEW* if you were a Bearcats fan or just an educated hoops fan (even though you may have HATED Cincinnati) - - that team was going to say "ENOUGH." They were going to lockdown DePaul on the defensive end and they were going to score the ball on the offensive end. ha! What I didn't see coming and WHO COULD HAVE? It had NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE.....not like *that* - - not like *this* game! Where Kenyon would score and then he'd either #1 - steal the ball #2- Block the shot or pass or#3 Change the entire trajectory of the shot, and lastly what made it even funnier was that DePaul *KNEW* it was happening on both ends.....and they simply could not stop him. Gee wiz, I didn't realize I typed a short novel. ha!

@MrPocketfullOfSteel Жыл бұрын
Indeed they were. *The BADDEST and Bombest* Front Cover *ever* in Sports Illustrated History was the December 2nd, 1996 College Basketball Preview edition! *lolol* It shows a shirtless Danny Fortson and a MAP of Indiana and Cincinnati *superimposed* across Fortson's torso and in his left hand he's holding a Basketball and that map is superimposed *ONTO* the ball too *hahaa!* it's *Da BOMB.* !!! :o) On his upper chest what sticks out in *BOLD* black is the city of Indianapolis (where the Final Four was) and on the ball in *BOLD* black is the word "CINCINNATI." From Cincinnati upwards to Indy is I74 on the map and above the ball in Danny's hand it boldly states "You Can't Get To The Final Four In Indianapolis *WITHOUT GOING THROUGH CINCINNATI.* " I remember when I walked by the checkout and saw that, I was like "Daggggggone!!!!" I remembered in my mind what that looked like because (of course) I bought it, but I just typed it in to take a look at it again. That image of Danny was cemented in my mind, that's it! Da Bomb! *BOOM*

Oscar Robertson is the best player in UC history.
@MrPocketfullOfSteel Жыл бұрын
FWIW - it was his *leg.* His lower leg. UC would have went *MORE THAN DEEP.* That was one of those few seasons, where it was simply *CINCINNATI* .......and then everyone else. That tournament was going to be a tournament to see who would get *pummeled* in the National Championship game by the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. There was a *HUGE* disparity in talent that season. That is just HOW GOOD UC was that season. They would have *PASTED* Michigan State by 17+.......and I actually believe it'd have been by 22 or more. The last 5 minutes would have been a *coronation* on the court. The title would have been coming home to Clifton.
@MrPocketfullOfSteel Жыл бұрын
@@513official4 *lolol* OK. I get it. My Dad followed UC all his 78 years. I know ALL THE STORIES of Oscar. My Dad and I (before a UC game) would be *literally* standing in the Armory Fieldhouse......I *LOVE THE GYM*....badass. He'd stand (where in his mind) where Oscar would stand and he'd point and tell me stories and all, so I get it....I'm not stupid when it comes to Robertson. But I remember during Kenyon's senior season, when it was soooo apparent to *anyone* that he grew leaps and bounds in his game during the off season. I asked my Dad who he thought was better. *Fun Fact* : I was a donor to the program and a UCAT member for seven seasons. My parking pass (for 3 years, I believe) was *literally* maybe 30 feet (if that) from the Shoemaker Center's front door where we entered, Oscar's parking spot was TWO SPOTS farther away from the entrance than ours. hahaa! I always got a kick out of that. But I asked my Dad and he loved "The Big O." But he told "Gregg, it's not even really that close." He meant Kenyon was better, btw. I'm just saying. Like he said ( and I knew what he meant)......"Gregg, the game was so different back then." It was. But he told me something like "it was fun to debate and talk about etc." - but he made a point to say something like "If Kenyon would have been on *any* of Oscar's teams at UC, they'd have won a National Championship every year." FWIW - UC NEVER won the title while Oscar was there, but as soon as he left of course.....they won their back to back championships......and it *SHOULD HAVE* been "back to back to back." But I digress. haaha! BTW - THANKS for putting up the perfect amount of clip of the PERFECT Kenyon game that cemented him as the #1 Player in College Hoops!
