There are multiple inclines which were used to transport the trolley cars from lower parts of town up the many hills of Cincinnati. The reservoir you mention is the Eden Park Reservoir. Good detail in this hand drawn "map". Get a Sanford Insurance map from 1900 and it will show you the names of the buildings, if they had gas, electric, alarm systems, etc. Very good maps to view.

The thing going up the hill that you asked about is an incline. There were 5 of them Price Hill, Fairview Belleveu, Mt. Auburn and Mt Adam's. The one you pointed out was probably Mt Adam's incline. They were like a railway that took people from the bottom of a hill to the top, usually two rails next to each other one going up as the other car went down.

The Long thing on the left is the Mount Adams incline. It carried the trolley cars up the hill. I have a photo of my Mother, Aunt and Grandmother toward the bottom of the hill with the incline in the background. Photo was taken sometime around 1930

I recognize the Mount Adams Trolly Car incline, which I've seen in old photos and of course the Eden Park Reservoir. Covington though looks almost like an empty wilderness. If we could go back in time, I'd love to visit Cincinnati and Covington in the 1880's.

The feature pointed to below the "dam" is probably an incline railway to ascend the hill - which looks like it was/is Mt Adams.

I'm not 100% certain on these but here's what I think I see: 1:03 City Hall I think 1:15 and 1:22 Suspension Bridge (I think the Island Queen ran day excursions to Coney Island. 2:01 Mouth of the Mill Creek at Ohio River. 2:29 Mt Adams Incline, Eden Park, Mt Adams. 2:36 I've swam in that. Waded, anyway. 2:39 I think that's the "castle" water tower at the very top. 2:51 More Mt. Adams Incline 2:58 The landmark Pilgramage Church at right. 3:06 Mouth of Licking River, Kentucky, and Suspension Bridge. 3:16 Covington and Newport KY 3:29 Possibly Fountain Square fountain in center, City Hall the giant building top left. 3:50 Seems like Music Hall should be there someplace but I can't pick it out immediately, if so.

It is not a damn, you are right it's a reservoir. Thanks for sharing this history, the view of the railyard East of the Purple People Bridge is new, I had no idea how large that was. Lot's of Churches and breweries!

The aforementioned reservoir is in Eden Park and the curious vertical railway is an incline to Mt Adams: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Adams_Incline

The Cincinnati public library in downtown Cincinnati has a lot of these maps, and layouts of all of the neighborhoods. Located in the genealogy section.

Incline plane railways were a big thing in hilly cities. They took people and streetcars up hillsides that were too steep for highway engineering back in the day. Pittsburgh and Johnstown PA still have them.

+ted belcher Yes, the Mt Adams one. There were several. The other part you were looking at was the aqueduct for the city. If you go to Eden park (former estate of Nicholas Longworth) you can see some parts of the wall still standing.
