CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Braddock (Russell Crowe) watches the film of Baer (Craig Bierko) killing a man in the boxing ring, and despite warnings, he remains headstrong.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The true story of an athlete who achieved his greatest success against the most daunting odds of his life is brought to the screen in this historical drama. In the 1920s, James Braddock (Russell Crowe) from Bergen, NJ, was a promising contender in professional boxing; he had strength, spirit, and tenacity, but the combination of a serious hand injury and a 1929 defeat in a bout with light heavyweight champ Tommy Loughran sent his career into a serious tailspin. As Braddock's career in the ring dried up, the Great Depression put a stake through the heart of America's economy, and Braddock found himself working at the New York docks for pitiful wages as he tried to support his wife, Mae (Renée Zellweger), and three children. Desperate for money, Braddock turned to his former trainer and manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti), who was unexpectedly able to scare up a bout for him, battling John Griffin at Madison Square Garden. While conventional wisdom had it that Braddock was too old, out of shape, and out of practice to have any chance of winning, he defeated Griffin, and continued beating his opponents with a powerful left hook that had been intensified by years of punishing dock work. In a nation desperate for good news, Braddock's surprising comeback became a tonic to struggling workers and unemployed people, and all eyes were on Braddock when in 1935 he took on powerful heavyweight champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko) in what was both literally and figuratively the fight of his life.

I heard Baer was a very classy and forgiving guy. When he knocked out Campell, he sat next to him for 30 minutes to make sure he was okay until the ambulance arrived. And then visited his bedside and tried comfort Campell's wife. They completely ruined his reputation in this movie. I love this movie, though

No it's actually true. They portrayed Max Baer as a bastard who liked to hurt people. Well when the guy died in the hospital Max Baer was with him. And when James Braddock won the championship Max Baer kissed him on the cheek and hugged him since he underestimated Braddock and knew he clearly won the title from him.

This went right along with Braddock's character. There was no self-deception, no "he's probably not that dangerous." He stared reality right in the face. You want to scare me. I can't be scared. Nothing can hurt me worse than failing as a man, as a father. You want to play this video to frighten me? Play it again. And again. What's your point?

Well to be fair, in real life Max Baer supposedly felt extremely horrible about killing the guy, and his son was pretty pissed that they portrayed him as a cocky asshole. That being said, for the sake of the movie, they kinda had to do that, otherwise the audience wouldn't hate the bad guy as much.

They didn't _have_ to do it. You can make a film without an outright villain; people do it all the time. But Hollywood apparently either lacks the skills to do it, or doesn't care to use them. They did the same thing with the NTSB in "Sully". It's terrible.

Baer was devastated by what happened to Campbell. In fact the only reason he didn’t leave the sport entirely was because, as this movie shows very effectively, you just didn’t quit your job during the depression. By all accounts he was quite similar to Braddock, and he meant just as much to the Jewish community as Jim Braddock did to the Irish during that time.

The true story of this was that Max Baker’s former friend and trainer yelled hateful remarks at him which caused him to try and go for a knockout next round. After hitting Campbell too hard he stayed with him until an ambulance arrived and stayed by his side at the hospital. After he died Max Baer broke down in tears and had nightmares about killing him ever since.

I agree. He hardy used his left hand and when he couldn't use his right, he had his first knockdown of his career. Also, he was known for battering the opponent with right hooks. His right was far stronger than the left, so he was just accustomed to using it. Plus, when he accidentally killed Campbell, he broke down and cried and paid for Campbell's children's educations as a token of remorse. He was a good person but received a Hollywood villainous upgrade to boost the move's credentials.

Also, EVERYONE who says that his character was ruined by the film is wrong. His character still exsists, and the moviegoers have to dislike Baer to make it more serious. If the bad guy was a likeable, respectable, funny guy who genuinely cared for the people he beat the shit out of, the crowd would like him just as much as they would the hero. The make the fight more serious, there needs to be a good amount of bad reception towards Baer.

The real story doesn’t dissuade me from liking the movie at all, if anything it makes me appreciate the reality of it all even more. Not sure if that makes sense xD but altogether it does help to reinstate the fact that THIS is a movie and not real.

Absolutely. Max Baer isn’t gonna make it on anyone’s top 10 greatest heavyweights lists but he was a damn good fighter with a nasty right hand. He had a pro record of 71-13 with 53 of them coming by knockout. And look what he did to Max Schmeling. The guy was legit fighter and champion who just happened to be in his prime during the Joe Louis era. He was also an incredibly nice guy and nothing like the way they portrayed him in this movie. No, you can tell from watching the real Max Baer's fights that his body type was a fair bit slimmer than Craig Bierko's was in the fight film in the movie. I'm not sure there's even a film of the real Baer-Campbell fight in existence. However, after seeing a clip of Baer's fight with Max Schmeling, I suspect that that fight may be the basis for the in-movie fight between Baer and Campbell. The actual wide-swinging styles and particularly that combination at 0:59 are very similar, or at least the style Baer exhibited during the few moments of the clip I saw was similar. Perhaps the fight as a whole was different, but having seen this movie first, I was shocked at how similar the clip looked to the movie's rendition of the Baer-Campbell fight. Freaked me out a little lol

I don't support Tyson! Max Baer had little boxing skills. His big right hand wouldn't matter much to Tyson because Tyson was twice as fast as Baer. You do know that Frankie Campbell's legs got caught in the ropes and thats the only reason he was still on his feet when Baer continued to beat him. Any power puncher could kill someone under those circumstances. We are also talking about a prime Mike Tyson, who was not the same crazy guy that bit Holyfield.

All those comments saying the movie made Baer look bad and that he was better than that are disillusioned. The movie showed him killing his opponent which he did do. If you say that he felt guilty for doing it I believe you, but that doesn't change the fact that he did kill his opponent, so that's pretty much how it must have looked irl. He probably noticed later that the guy wasn't moving but hey it would have made no sense to let that clip in this scene go on and on in the movie.
