Directed by Academy Award-nominee Kenneth Branagh (“Jack Ryan,” “Thor”), the film stars Lily James (“Downton Abbey,” “Wrath of the Titans”) in the title role, Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones,” “Birdsong”) as the Prince, Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett (“The Aviator”) as the infamous stepmother Lady Tremaine, and Academy Award-nominee Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech,” “Alice in Wonderland”) as the Fairy Godmother. Holliday Grainger (“Great Expectations,” “Anna Karenina”) and Sophie McShera (“Downton Abbey,” “Waterloo Road”) play Ella’s stepsisters Anastasia and Drisella, respectively. Stellan Skarsgård (“The Avengers,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) and Nonso Anozie (“Game of Thrones,” “The Grey”) play the Arch Grand Duke and the Prince’s loyal friend, the Captain. Tony Award-winner Derek Jacobi portrays the King.
“Cinderella” is produced by Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: First Class,” “Elysium”), Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”), David Barron (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” “Jack Ryan”), from a screenplay by Chris Weitz (“About a Boy,” “The Golden Compass”).
The filmmaking team includes three-time Academy Award-winning production designer Dante Ferretti (“The Aviator,” “Hugo,” “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”), three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell (“The Aviator,” “The Young Victoria,” “Shakespeare in Love”), director of photography Haris Zambarloukos (“Sleuth,” “Thor”) and Academy Award-winning editor Martin Walsh (“Chicago,” “Clash of the Titans”).
The timeless story of “Cinderella” dates back to 1697 when first created by Charles Perrault, although it truly came to life for millions all over the world in 1950 with Walt Disney’s celebrated animated feature.
Director Kenneth Branagh says: “It is impossible to think of Cinderella without thinking of Disney and the timeless images we’ve all grown up watching. And those classic moments are irresistible to a filmmaker. With Lily James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace. Her Prince is being played by Richard Madden, a young actor with incredible power and charisma. He is funny, smart and sexy and a great match for Cinderella.”

Forget the waist. I was dumbfounded with her kindness. I mean, I would have severely harmed her stepmother and daughters. It made me reflect that kindness takes a lot of effort... Just like love. These things that impact for good take A LOT of effort. So, it made me question myself and desire to practice more kindness everyday. Even to those people I'd like to punch in the face. Haha... P.s. The dress was absolutely BEATIFUL! ♥

I'm honestly glad that Disney "watered" down Cinderella. I read the original and was completely shocked at the violence, blood, and gore in the story. I heard a report that someone or some company was planning on making all the fairy tales from the ORIGINAL stories and making them into movies. Really? That's basically horror movies, to the scariest, darkest, bloodiest core. The rating would be R- or X-rated. Cinderella is my favorite Disney story and have aspired to be like her in many ways...just not vengeful.

Ok. I get annoyed when parents get over protective about their kids like this. I feel like a lot of parents don't actually know much about corsets. Sure it creates a nice silhouette, but it also served as a support for the humongous gowns they wore at the time. The gowns were probably heavier than some kids. So if they didn't want their backs to collapse, they had to have something tight and structured to hold the weight of the fabric. Also, we so some crazy stuff for the sake of fashion like wear super high heels or push up bras and they don't serve much more of a purpose than to make you look tall and curvy :/

Why does it make people think they should be like that to be accepted? Cinderella was not accepted by her family so that doesn’t make any sense. She is who she is and she likes to be the size she is so let her be slim. If there was a more curvy girl on the screen then you wouldn’t be saying that every girl feels they should look like that to fit in. Online haters will happily say that people are too skinny but would never say someone is too fat. It is discrimination and we need to put a stop to it.

A corset will of course make a waist a lot smaller, and can be dressed to look smaller. It would be with that time period. My Mom had a small waist when she was in her twenties and she wasn't anorexic either. I never hear to much people complaining about breast size too much , like why are they sooo big ! The breast size has led many a girl/young woman to get major surgey that often ends up wrong.

The thing in the movie that I reacted on was when the stepsisters were getting ready for the ball and they really emphasized the corsets and the... what is it called... crinolines? The stiff underskirts that look ridiculous before you put on the dress. They emphasized that THIS is NOT how a real person looks, this is what is hidden underneath the beautiful (although the sisters dresses are awful) gowns and ball dresses to make them look this way. Wearing a corset gives you a small waist - but it's clearly shown that putting one on is very uncomfortable. And THE DRESS. OMG, it's so beautiful! I would wear that to my own wedding. :)

When I first watched the movie I didn't even notice her waist :') I strive to be exactly like Cinderella in the sense that she is strong, courageous and kind no matter how much life beat her down she still reacted kindly. I love this movie for that reason~ who even cares about the waist line, or the dress even? What makes this character beautiful, is how kind, courageous, caring and respectful she is. I think it's more important to highlight the meaning of the movie, rather than the look.

So much respect for Kenneth Branagh, Lily James, and everyone else who worked so hard on this film. They handle all the interviewers' questions with so much class. And when I found out it was Branagh that directed this film, I understood why it was such a nice film. He understands the importance of laying out a story with substance and rich characters and touches on human conflicts and struggles. I was afraid that Cinderella was just gonna be another shallow and commercial film but it was certainly not and that is refreshing. They were able to present the fairytale in a more realistic and provoking way.

It's weird cause I dont think movies ever I fluenced how I saw my body. I only cared about my body when people in my real life made me feel bad about it. So if some one is telling a child they are to fat, they will see the movies and think oh I have too look like her to be pretty. But only after someone has commented on a child weight do body issues come into play. So I dont think movies influence kids in the way people say they do. But that is just me and my opinion.

The movie has little to do with a period of history its a weird mish mash of the 18th century, 1940s, early 19th century and late 19th century. Theres no historical period to it quite frankly but yeah...for most of historyh women wore restricting clothing and society was very cruel to women. IDK I think they should be more realistic instead of making the stepmother the villain. Society was very strange back then and marrying a prince would not have been a fairytale in the majority of cases...they would simply be producing heirs and the prince would have a bevy of mistresses and especially in France, they would be recognized mistresses with almost official roles at court. So nah, it doesn't speak about history in the least. Its an outdated concept that marrying a prince saves the girl...it did well in the 50s for that reason. But really, its just a damn story for kids and nostalgic people to enjoy, it doesn't need to be that deep!

Agreed... I think she is beautiful but honestly...that doesn't matter to me. I like eccentric beauties with personality and interest. Wallis Simpson wasn't beautiful but she captivated a king and had the most fairytale like real royal marriage compared to someone like Diana who was beautiful but a nightmare. Eva Green is stunning... Holiday Grainger who playedone of the stepsisters is stunning...she doesn't have the perfect chiseled face or isn't super tall etc...she has a round face but is still beautiful. Another good example Jen Aniston vs Angelina Jolie. I could care less than Jen aniston is 'the most beautiful woman in the world' for one thing thats a farce lol but shes also the most boring person on earth and can't play anything except the same boring characters in rom coms etc.

It’s funny how adults try to speak for the youth. As a teenager, not one person my age thinks this is realistic. Sure when I was 8 I wanted to look like a Barbie but because of common sense and knowing the difference between a regular girl and a photoshopped model, I’d never have the expectation of looking like that. Yes I know eating disorders are a thing, it’s my generation that’s suffering it the most, but I guarantee you no one starves themselves because of a Disney movie. Instead of focusing on the dumb unimportant things like Cinderella let’s take action on the unrealistic standards outside of Hollywood movies. We are not pressured to look like princesses, but Victoria secret models. We aren’t given the expectation to have an unrealistic waste size, but to have our rib cages on full display. It pisses me off knowing that adults wanting to protect the youth are the ones not listening to what we really think is causing damage.

Dane Mitch its true there is always that one freaking person or small group of people who over-exaggerate how problematic something is. Or make an issue out of something that is fine. but the biggest problem with that is that those outrageous people who are EXTREME ruin it for everyone else who is genuinely and RIGHTFULLY fighting for basic human rights that they should already have. have you read “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”? it’s exactly like that. Even worse, this gives ppl an excuse to ignore real calls for equality bc sometimes ppl say “its those annoying ppl again.” I recognize that there are ppl who are extremely sensitive but there are also people who are the opposite of them, and neither group is right.

I didn't even think about her waist or notice it until I came across this video. I think it's sad that someone could get so worked up for something so tiny (pun intended!) and end up with the same attitudes of the step mother and sisters who were jealous of Cinderella's beauty. I know girls who are tinier that Lily James (and it's a natural size for them), and I'm about Lily James size, so are we supposed to fatten up so we can be 'normal' and not make girls worry about body image? Maybe the parents of these daughters don't give their daughters enough credit to appreciate the true message of the movie anyway, but if some of their daughters are really suffering then they need real help- even if that scene wasn't in the movie it's not going to help them anyway. Parents and friends will have much more of an impact on girls than a movie will too. Marilyn Monroe once said that it's society that's ugly, not you, and society has really been caught up on outer beauty lately so it's refreshing to have a story that focuses on strength of character and beauty on the inside. Anyone can have those no matter what waist size you have.

Oh please? Who in the heck cares about the size of the waist. I NEVER thought about that even once when I watched this tremendously brilliant and beautiful movie...I purchased the movie and I am a grown woman. The movie exceeded my expectations and I was a little girl when the original came out. It was always my favorite. I have watched EVERY version of this movie and this one is my favorite movie of all time!! Very well made....very well thought out...tremendous message of love and kindness and the acting was beyond wonderful. Thank you for making such a beautiful movie.... And Lily James is as beautiful in real like as she was in the movie...

The only flaw in Cinderella is that Lily James didn't get to sing enough. Like Lily. the dress was beautiful. People who sing and dance in a film can wear whatever they want, including corsets like Mitzi Gainor did in South Pacific and Shirley Jones did in Oklahoma. Corsets help when riding a horse, especially side-saddle, because they promote better posture.

If you look at the actress in other pictures her waist is already small. I watched the dance scene again and saw her waist is a normal skinny size its the rest of the dress making it look smaller. This film was basically teaching girls how they can be strong and still act like proper well mannered individuals. Which is crucial to young people of any gender.

Parents are the only ones paying attention to Cinderella's waist. It isn't even focused on in the movie for more than 30 seconds. Lots of parents nowadays are just fussing over the irrelevant. My niece legit paused the film at the ballroom scene were her waist was on display and only said, "Her dress is soooo flowy and poofy and blue."

It’s accurate to the time Cinderella was set. My family has a long line of 20 inch waists! That’s just how it was when there was corsets and rationed food! My waist is a happy 24inch one but then I don’t squeeze into corsets or have to miss meals due to lack of food!

I paid attention to her waist in the trailer but it was only minutes, I forgot about that later and also in the movie (I was 13 at the time) because I could only put my attention on her kindness and how the movie talks so much about the power of being brave and kind.

Nah us adults care more about her waist than kids do, kids liked the dress and the happy ending.....it's us that focus on that. I had Barbie's growing up, that didn't mean l applied it to my life that you should look like that, fairy tales are a sweetness in a cruel world for children. My daughter loves fairy tales and princesses regardless of waist lines...

I think parents have a much greater effect on children’s body image than a movie. No child is going to see is this movie and have an eating disorder if they’ve grown up with healthy ideas about food and weight.

It's funny cuz, most if not all people (kids and adults) mostly get insecure because of models/trends and whatever, not movies especially Disney movies, not even once when I was a kid or adult did I get insecure about Disney movies, what did and still does make me insecure are the beauty standards and social media which I can confidently say is something that most of us relate to.

Wtf it's Cinderella! Children aren't going to care about the waist size. 🙌🏼 I'm so literally done with these so called 'parents' complaining about Disney animated waist size, Barbie dolls being to perfect, and now this shit? Like that's not the point ! Each Disney princess has a different message...but of course our generation gets offensive over stupid things.

anyone remember seeing the Les Mis movie? Eponine’s waist was the smallest waist i’ve ever seen! like i was wowed but didn’t feel offended or feel like i wanted to look more like her. im just impressed she sang in it. her waist is small without the corset too. Also, this is interesting cus in Beauty and the Beast Emma didn’t wear a corset... but tbh either way i didnt really notice. i focus more and remember more how pretty the dress is
@juuliatumanoff1084
@juuliatumanoff1084 5 жыл бұрын
The difference here is that Les Mis is not a children's movie. The point these concerned parents are trying to make is that constantly only being subjected to extremely thin girls/women in children's movies is going to subconsciously affect the child's beauty ideals. The kid might not think anything about Cinderella's waistline when they see the movie but over the years they will subconsciously start to associate beauty with being thin. When is the last time you've seen a mainstream children's movie depict a chubby girl, or even a girl with an average build, as being pretty? Also Lily having a naturally thin waist is not an issue (though, like I said it would be nice to have body diversity in Disney films) but they actually had her wearing 2 corsets, which made her waist to be about 18-19 inches, and according to Cate Blanchett Lily could barely breathe while wearing it, and she actually had to dance in it. So they intentionally made the actress' already very small waist even smaller and went to pretty extreme lengths to do it. Not trying to start an argument! I just want to state my point of view and why I think parents' concerns are valid.
@FluffyJiaJia
@FluffyJiaJia 6 жыл бұрын
Well the main thing was that, you could see it was hard for Lily to breathe while dancing in that dress due to the corset during the behind the scenes footage. Even if it was “normal” at the time, this is still a kids film, and it would be good to keep in mind that sometimes young girls will look to movie princesses as the ideal and compare themselves to them physically. Even at the time, women suffered from overly tight corsets, but now we’ve stopped using them. So while the movie’s message about strength and kindness was the most important, body image should still be a legitimate concern. This movie and the dress were beautiful. But if the waist had been made without such a tight corset, or so that it was easier for Lily to breath then it would have been even better.

Lily wore a beautifully conceived, and technically perfectly executed corset, which, in this period, is meant to squeeze a waist in considerably, while giving the sense of an elongated torso from the waist up - that is the purpose of a corset. It worked. Lily looked a dream. I would venture that exercise and healthy nutrition is part of her daily routine.

Cinderella is a well-known character, and they clearly played off several images from the animation - Cinderella's silhouette is quite recognisable, and everything in it is fantastical, it's all heightened. I get where they're coming from, but she looked utterly breathtaking in the ball scene and I think any manipulation for PC's sake would've cheapened the moment.

I know it’s ridiculous that society has pushed these expectations on us to this extent, but have you seen the statistics for kids that have anorexia? It’s astounding. You shouldn’t be simply overlooking the issues that we are facing today: it seems stupid, but it’s just the facts.

There is a movie version of "Man of La Mancha" that these "concerned" people ought to see. The beginning of the movie shows Peter O'Toole becoming Don Quixote. He is already tall and lean and the costuming makes him look even taller and much leaner. It's an ILLUSION created in part by the camera lens and the clothing. So, too, with Cinderella. Lily James is slender, she's corseted, and that voluminous skirt makes her waist look smaller than Scarlett O'Hara's whopping 16-inches (the smallest in Clayton County). Lily today doesn't look like she's starving or anorexic and all these worry warts need to chill out. Lily James isn't the first to be corseted for a period part in a film and she won't be the last.

6 years later this movie is my favourite remake of classic Disney movie even more than the Beauty and the Beast... The main reasons would include They stayed true to the time era's style and they personally could not have a gotten a better actress to be Cinderella. Lily has Sophisticated aura about her, not in a snobbish way, but in a well held way and she is able to brush off rude comments. She also brought the animated classic we know and love to life. Personally I am happy Emma Watson decided no to do this movie as Cinderella would not fit her personality. Both Actresses are Belle and Cinderella in real life.

I have a very small waist in proportion of my shoulders and hips. I am 44 and have struggled my whole life with how to dress my body. When I wear fitting clothing people gasp at the smallest of my waist. I am by no means skinny. I got so much attention, that I wore clothes to make myself look boxy. I didn’t know how to dress. Now I am regretful that I tried to hide my body my whole first half of life. It’s such a shame this was ever a conversation. Poor Lily. I understand that frustration. She looks healthy and beautiful and she should rock that.
