In this video, we're going to talk about the differences between cine and stills lenses, and why you might want to choose one over the other. I've compared cine lenses on this channel, and we'll use the Sigma Cine 35mm T1.5 vs The Sigma 35mm DG DN as an example.
Cine lenses are popular among filmmakers and photojournalists because they offer a unique perspective. They're also more expensive than still lenses, but they're worth it if you want to capture unique footage or photographs. If you're not sure which lens to choose, watch this video to find out the differences between cine and stills lenses and decide which one is right for you!

hey, thanks for putting this together, bud. I really appreciated the quantitative and qualitative breakdown you explained between the stills and cine lenses. You totally called it, I'm a stills photographer looking at changing lanes and part of what I'm trying to understand is how the priorities for cine lenses can vary compared to stills glass. Thank you so much, this felt like a good intro to a topic I need to do a deep dive into ❤

Don’t invest in cine lenses unless you know you’re gonna like the character or lack thereof in them, among other things. Unless you’re investing in a big name like Cooke or something of that caliber, they generally depreciate relatively considerably. I’ve bought lenses that were optically quite neat perfect, similar to Sigma Art for instance, but now I want something either even more perfect or something with lots of aesthetically pleasing character. Filters don’t do a great job of imitating imperfection, they just degrade the image. Some filters cost more than or close to what one vintage prime costs, like an AI Nikkor for example.

I impulse bought the cheapest cine lens I could find off ebay, a Rokinon 35mm T1.5 for $160 on ebay partly because I wanted to get into cine lenses for fun and partly to get some practice manually focusing on a gimbal. I don't have a camera with good autofocus, and the Rokinon came in absolute clutch for the first commercial shoot I took this on as I needed to focus on specific things at a specific timing that my other prime couldn't do. Being able to use the focus gear instead of the stupid gear strap thing that comes with the RS2 Pro that never worked for me was such a convenience. Also for it being so cheap, I was surprised how clean and free of fringing/chromatic aberration it was. For what I am doing at the moment though, I feel that is all I really need for cine lenses until I get to the point where I'll potentially be making higher-budget, cinematic stuff. My wallet and I are scared for the time I get sucked into the cine lens rabbit hole though.

Nice to see someone else showing Sigma some love! I did a video a few weeks back about Sigma vs. Sony lenses and realized I much prefer Sigma for their character compared to Sony. The one exception is the 24-70 GM ii - that is quite a bit better than the big and heavy Sigma and worth the extra $$. Great comparison between the two lenses!

Awesome video. I recently finished DP work for a friend using his cinema lenses and they were great. However, I've been doing photography for many years and have a bunch of stills glass. Now that I'm doing more video for myself I'm looking into the differences, this helped a lot. I use Dehancer to make my digital look less sharp/clean and it works well, but still not the same.

I primarily do green screen virtual production, so for me I require f/5.6, so a fast lens doesn't help me, I need a sharper lens with autofocus and lens compensation and focus breathing compensation with FX30, which can only be done with Sony lenses. It's really important to be able to hit every focal length with green screen to match focal length of the background camera or 3D rendered scene, else it can break the illusion, digital zoom does not work. For the green screen you'll be hard pressed to see the difference a cinema lens and a mirrorless lens with focus breathing compensation on the FX3/FX30. Any lens can look Hollywood level when used right. For me the Sony 10-18mm f/4 and 18-105mm f/4 is the perfect green screen lens for my FX30 and ZV-E10. That is 15-152.5mm focal length, which covers the entire range of what you need for green screen. I'm saving up for an FX3 and Sirui 35mm T2.9 1.6x anamorphic lens. I never thought in a million years I'd ever own one of those but it's dialed in by summer.

Nice one. We're slowly filling out a set of the Xeen CF from Rokinon and we love the look these provide. So far we're sticking with the Canon 85mm f/1.4 because it's stabalized and it's nice to have that OIS for the longer focal lengths. Surprisingly the canon matches up with the Xeen look pretty well.

@@KofiYeboah It's actually a "neewer" or sth I ordered off amazon. It all started whith the quest to get the biggest aperture at the lowest price possible. For I am broke. Started looking native, switched to *any mount I can adapt to* as soon as I saw the prices. First one I bought was a "gazechimp" (that's the brand name, I 💩you not) 50mm f1.4 c mount for next to nothing. Weird, stupid, yet surprisingly usable. Definitely lots of character. Mostly using my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (with speedbooster effectively f2.0ish) now and the Laowa 10mm f2.0 zero diszortion (native m4/3) for wide shots. The latter is pretty funky. On a regular m4/3 sensor it looks positively weird in the corners, since it actually has *zero fish eye distortion.* That doesn't mean it doesn't have distortion though, remember the original counterstrike game, when someone walked right next to you? That kinda weird flattened out "there is no actual eyeball @work here so enjoy the trip" kinda distortion. That. Fortunately the bmpcc has a tiny sensor, so exactly that part is cut off. Gives it a unique look that suggests a way bigger sensor. Anyway, sorry for the wall of text but maybe this could be a fun video idea. Maybe you have gone through all the quirky/DIY stuff yet, maybe you haven't... I get you're a professional but hey, sometimes it's that odd spice that makes the stew 😄🤷🏻‍♂️

Rent expensive lenses pass cost on to client. If you make $s then buy one. Pass cost onto clients till its paid for.

If you can afford it, go for the cinema lens due to Quality-of-Construction differences. Cinema TENDS to be simply BUILT BETTER and will last longer in hotter/colder/harsher/wetter/snowier environments! In terms of imagery, I am seeing some HIGH END photography and video one here, so that tells everyone that CONTENT and camera skills are STILL KING today! No matter what you buy, frame your photos and videos well, put lots of dramatic lighting on your subject and make a decent attention-grabbing story that brings viewers into your channel and you will make some decent bank. When you think of it, It STILL shocks me even today in 2024, that it takes ONLY A FEW well thought-out scripts OR one in-the-moment "Lucky" video capture to bring 10 Million Views which ends-up being around $60,000 to $90,000 USD in KZbin Ad Income. Do that on a monthly basis and you are living the Hollywood life. V

Worth upgrading to DZO from sigma still? Thinking of renting some for a shoot coming up just to see. Never messed with Cine glass before

@@kalebmartinson for real the difference is a whole dimension. Still lenses for video is and was ever shit. U have do deal with manuall focus. Like always as a good Film Producer or Creator. And u need to learn how to shoot with mist filtert. Than u step in another world.

@@KofiYeboahyes you can but those on actual sets & production crews aren’t relying on AF. I’ve seen too many amateurs videos with focus breathing or losing focus. I’m guilty of this until I learned.

@@Menosfilms agree to disagree! There’s plenty of ‘pros’ with crews making professional work with and without auto focusing lenses (wouldn’t call Mark Bone an Amateur and from working with him, he’s using autofocus lenses all the time) manual focus is an important skill, but that alone isn’t what determines if you’re a “pro” or not 🫡
