This film single handedly brought Queen back into the US mainstream, and Mike Myers was thanked by Brian May. So much so that when the film Bohemian Rhapsody was made, Mike Myers was given the role of Ray Foster and cheekily references Wayne's World in it too, with the quote - "We need a song teenagers can bang their heads to in a car. Bohemian Rhapsody is not that song.". Genius.

I missed that reference in Bohemian Rhapsody. Thank you! I'll look for it next time I watch it. But, yeah - it was even re-released as a single in 1992 and did better than it did with it was originally released in 1975 as far as US Chart position at least, and then made the Top 100 AGAIN after the movie was released. Same song - three times on the US Top 100 with 17 years between the the first two releases, and 43 years between the first and the third releases. Crazy.

(This was during the days of VHS, pre-digital editing.) I still remember the group who chose to parody this movie and among the scenes they translated and re-enacted was the Bohemian Rhapsody scene in the car. The students had translated the lyrics of the song to Spanish, put on wigs and costumes, and recorded in a (parked) car. The day we watched the student projects in class, their peers erupted in delight and amazement. The singing might not have been Freddy Mercury quality, but the translation was impressive!

Oh man, Wayne's World was hugely influential on pop culture in the early 90s, mostly because it was so firmly a product of that same zeitgeist. The film was so heavily quoted by young people back then, I feel like I've seen the film a thousand times, even though I've probably only watched the whole thing once or twice. It also helped re-popularize Queen in the US (Freddie Mercury had passed away just a few months before the film's release), even re-charting "Bohemian Rhapsody" at #2 on the pop charts in 1992, 17 years after its original release. And the sequel is definitely worth watching. It came out only a year after the first film, and the aesthetic is so similar that I have trouble remembering which film certain scenes are from.
@RonJomero11 ай бұрын

This one is actually based not just in the era of "SNL," but this is the second and arguably most famous movie based directly on an "SNL" sketch after The Blues Brothers. Historically, one thing you -- mostly George -- has seemed to struggle to get his footing with is when a movie is based on a sketch comedy and the movie itself continues that ethos, where it's basically just, "come up with a joke construct for one scene or sequence, play it out during that scene, and then have a totally different concept for the next scene." It's interesting to me that something like Wayne's World strikes you as odd, but then modern movies that do this, like most of the Will Ferrell movies you've watched, don't seem quite as weird. Myers does have a reputation for being difficult. I don't know about the thing about his bodyguards or whatnot, but it sounds like part of his difficult attitude is 1) perfectionism and 2) a reluctance to be social with other people. Not like that he doesn't like it in the sense that he's trying to be rude, just that it's challenging for him, which is actually something you hear is true of a number of comedians. Because they're funny and likable on-screen, people expect them to be just as gregarious in real-life, but many comedians are quiet and introverted people. Not sure if public access still exists, but it really *was* like KZbin before KZbin. If you had a camera and the inclination, you could book a timeslot on local airwaves designated public access and just host your own TV show. That's why Benjamin and his producer go to the TV station first. They aren't expecting to find Wayne there, they know Wayne is broadcasting out of a basement, but they have to talk to the local television station in order to figure out where Wayne lives. It also broadly explains why "Wayne's World" is kinda just a stream-of-consciousness. You'd get a lot of strange, oddball people who wanted to rant or whatever. I think the closest analogue is probably Twitch streaming, except it wasn't interactive unless you had a show where people could call in. People tuned into see the host do whatever they wanted to. The explanation for the "Grey Poupon" joke is (if I remember correctly) there were ads where one rich person in a Rolls-Royce, like the one Wayne talks to, rolls up to another, and asks, "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?" The idea is that since they're both fancy, they both have the "fancy" mustard, and if you get it, you can be fancy too. Tia Carrere (Cassandra) previously appeared on the channel as the one of the villains in True Lies. She's from Hawaii, with Filipino and Chinese parents, if that explains the accent. You've also seen Noah Vanderhoff (Brian Doyle-Murray, brother of Bill) and his wife (Colleen Camp) before, in Groundhog Day and Caddyshack, and Clue, respectively. When Garth asks Wayne if he ever found Bugs Bunny attractive when he dressed as a girl, Myers' laughter is real. Simone's guess about "Stairway to Heaven" is correct. It was so commonly played in guitar stores that this is a joke about that. What's funny is that Led Zeppelin was once so famous for refusing to let people use their music in movies, that the three or four notes of Stairway that Wayne plays had to be censored, legally. In fact, the copy you watch probably had the replacement music, unless you happened to watch the brand-new 4K UHD release, which finally got clearance to use two seconds of the song for the first time since the movie was released in theaters in 1990. I had backstage passes for "Weird Al" Yankovic once. Very nice guy. Met him and the whole band. Hope you guys check out his movie UHF (1989) someday, and/or his recent "biopic," Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022) -- although in either case you should definitely listen to some Weird Al songs if you haven't. When Wayne and Garth are looking at the limo and the guy nearby fills them in, that's a little cameo from Chris Farley, making it a scene between the original and final voices of Shrek.

Yes, Dana Carvey can play the drums and Cassandra Wong really sings. "Laverne and Shirley" was the sitcom reference. A "Happy Days" spinoff that was popular in the 70's and 80's. And Mike Myers actually does speak decent Cantonese, however, he flubbed it on purpose for comedic effect. Everybody else just memorized the words. Mike and Dana wrote the story and it was too short, so they filled it between with pretty much SNL skits. At the time of shooting the opening scene, it was supposed to be another song that they had to sing and bang their heads to as the "Greatest rock song" as written in the script. Myers said Nope, the greatest is Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen and absolutly wanted this. Now they din't had the rights to the song, nor asked the band for it, since it was not what was scheduled. To do it, they did in fact shoot the scene, then they managed to get Brian May, the guitarist of Queen and asked him to pass it along to Freddy Mercury. Freddy saw the sequence, loved it and gave his Thumbs up for it. And it is now part of history, i do believe that this scene, contributed to relaunch the band's popularity in the US in the 90's. This whole thing is even more funnier, when you remember that in the Biopic Bohemian Rhapsody movie, you have Myers playing the band's Label director. And he tells the Band, when they make him listen to the maquette of Bohemian Rhapsody "THis song is crap, you'll never get a Bunch of Rock Fans to bang their heads and sing along "this song" in their cars!" Ahaha, when i realised this "joke" i was laughing my arse off.

The 'No Stairway' gag was indeed originally supposed to imply stores had heard enough but shortly after the U.S. release, Warner & Led Zeppelin refused the rights to even the first few notes of "Stairway" for broadcast, video, or foreign release, resulting in the current dub. Any more than two actual notes and they'd have to pay $100K according to the director. Apparently there is a store in Seattle who do allow it to be played and even offer a 15% purchase discount - but only if the customer can play it 100% correctly and all the way through.

Supposedly, Dana Carvey's character, Garth, was based on his brother. The soft, timid voice and shy demeanor were just a channeling of his sibling. Apparently, his brother was pretty big in the early development of computer software and invented a few things that made him quite a bit of cash. That's why they had Garth go back to the car and make that homemade (or carmade) stun gun; that would be something his brother might do.

One thing that I read in an interview with Dana Carvey when the movie was new, which might put some of this movie into perspective: They finished filming the story they wrote, cut it together, and it was only 40 minutes long. So they went back out and filmed a lot of random shenanigans to pad out the run time, which is why they just frequently take a little break to just do an unrelated comedy bit.

This movie was a huge thing for me. I always admired how it feels like we're seeing how much fun everyone is having making this, so it's been more important than any coherence. The feel-good nature of it has always held the weird randomness together beautifully. It was, sadly, somewhat ruined for me upon learning how difficult Myers was to work with. I still love what everyone else is doing in the film, but my Wayne-o-meter isn't in quite such glorious numbers is it used to be. Garth's always been my favorite, but I still quote stuff like "Egg-squeeze me? Baking powder?" I've seen this movie's huge success credited as really making slacker comedy a thing, but I don't know how true that is; the first Bill & Ted movie (itself possibly inspired by the Wayne's World sketches in SNL) came out a few years earlier, but I was just a bit too young to catch it. The thing with Alice Cooper is a reused joke from the SNL sketches. It was a different rockstar, though.

Wayne's World was Mike Meyers breakout sketch after he joined SNL in the late 80s. Instant hit skech, but one Lorne wasnt thrilled of at first. The more they did these characters on the show the bigger it got, to the point where they did one with Madonna during the peak of her SEX book / Justify My Love controversy in the early 90s. They sketch became a classic and led them to consider doing a film. Directed by Penelope Speris, who directed the legendary Decline of Civilization films about punk rock and metal. Apparently Mike clashed with her on this film creatively and axed her from the sequel.
