Maybe the rejection of ornament as expression the cosmos was not such a good idea. When everything is stripped back and the function so strongly expressed and then the function changes - then what ? Rip the building/architecture down because it is functionally obsolete ? How does a building get to the point where it will last to the second and third renovation ? kahntrentonbathhouse.org/

Louis Kahn's buildings were super sturdy built. What he means is before planning a building to strip away all the ornamental ideas, the social pressure, societal expectations and old norms. Create a monumental, grounded, super sturdy, fortress like structure that will never weather away, never be eaten by termites, never mold and even be wind and earthquake resistant. Let the functionality shine by itself. I am fascinated with what Louis Kahn said about creating a structure. Functionality can be beautiful, way more so than a building that hides it's functionality and covers it up with silly old fashioned tacky decoration. When the building speaks for itself, when it's function is open, when it's character is allowed to communicate, then you have true beauty. Only then can the aliveness of the building make itself seen.

Hi Craig it seems we all interpret life and buildings to our way of seeing the world to me they have a feeling of Zen Yeah it's a corny word but it does express the feeling better than most Simple bold uncluttered you can't hide anything all is exposed it can be interpreted and felt.just an opinion

Since Estonia is an independent country since 1918, but Kahn was born in 1901, I would argue that his origin is neither Russian nor Estonian in contemporary terms. As a matter of facts, he was born under the Russian Empire, from where he fled.
