My favorite fact about this movie was that Harold Ramis was aware of Bill Murray's tendency to burn out during production, so he actually filmed the days in reverse, with the end scenes being while Bill was still fresh, and the later scenes being when he was in full asshole couldn't care less mode. Made the transformation all the more believable.

Same here. It's when the good deeds went from checking karma boxes to getting real with humility and learning the intrinsic value of doing something right for no reward. i think for many, myself included, charity and good deeds feels good, so there is an element of selfishness in the act. This couldn't be more obvious when you see a celebrity talking about their "work" or "organization" because it's clear they want to publicity. Good charity begins with anonymity and progresses to work that may not result in success, but is worth trying if you can handle repeated failure emotionally. I think it's apt this is represented by a medical condition which progresses to death, because I imagine this what physicians must go through as they mature in their practice.

Another sin to consider - Phil says that he always wakes up “without a dent in the fender”, meaning his body is exactly the same as the first day. In order to properly play the piano or use a chainsaw, it requires small muscle and bone training. It’s not just in “your brain”. There is somatic visceral strength and dexterity needed to properly perform those actions. If he “reset” every day he would lose that strength. Like calluses for playing guitar. You can’t grow those in one day.

That, and the “he’s my student” line, considering Phil would obviously have absolutely no reason to go to a lesson anymore when he is already great at the piano and could be doing good deeds for that time. By the end it is Rita who asks him for a coffee, who “buys” him, who wants to be with him - what a contrast from trying to manufacture the perfect day! I would question any statistics on accuracy. The "predictions" are intentionally a "six of one, half-a-dozen of the other" kind of situation. Groundhog Day is roughly six weeks before the spring equinox (i.e. the start of spring) and "just around the corner" is vague and inspecific enough that it can be read as "about a month and a half." So any levels of accuracy are, themselves, misleading.

There should be a sin for Chris Elliot's talents going to waste in this film. He plays a throwaway cameraman when he's capable of doing something like Ned Ryerson (no offense to Stephen Tobolowski, who is a magnificent Ned). Also, sin off to Stephen Tobolowski who absolutely kills it in this film.

2 things you got incorrect. The quick search said based on movie evidence it's at least 13 years. The writer said, Phil read 1 page a day at the library, and he was stuck for 1000 years. The scenes were cut for time. Thing 2, the old man survives. Phil learns to become a better Dr.than the ones on staff. Most scenes were cut, except the last scene where the old man is dancing with his wife, and they say Thank you Dr.

What’s really sad is in the end Rita is the real victim of the story. As far as she’s concerned she’s in a relationship with her “perfect guy” but despite the good things Phil did achieve in that one day he still had to manipulate her and everyone else to break the loop which she will never really be aware of. Phil may have changed for the better but at the end of the day there’s no logical reason for Rita to think the guy who was a jerk to her on February 1st on the way to Punxsutawney would suddenly be the greatest guy in the world by February 3rd.
