Russell Crowe hated this line and tried to improvise his own version multiple times. Eventually the take containing the originally scripted line was used, but he still had this to say; "It was shit. But I'm the greatest actor in the world and I can make even shit sound good." I can't not think about this everytime I see that scene 😂

Some apparent plot holes were resolved with added scenes from the extended edition. For instance, it's revealed in dialog that Quintas apparently sent out some scouts to see why the soldiers who were ordered to execute Maximus hadn't returned, and they reported what they saw which Quintas dismissed as the aftermath of a barbarian raid. It's also implied that he knew or at least suspected that Maximus was still alive, but he kept the knowledge to himself and later let his scouts wrongly take the blame for not reporting it and was forced by Commodus to order their execution as a test of his loyalty.

There's videos on KZbin of guys demonstrating a technique called half swording where you grab the blade halfway down to get more control and leverage to either stab with like a spear or even swing like a hammer. Depending on the style of blade the sharpness varies greatly and what parts of the sword were sharp depends on what it was used for.

@@Davidsworldtravels Blades generally were very well kept, since a soldier's life honestly depended on it. It's not a matter of replacing, but more of sharpening the edge on stones. Roman armies had massive logistical elements with them. As for safely holding the blade, a solid grip with the edge in one of the folds of your hand/fingers, you can easily and safely half-sword and murder stroke.

@@Jbot123 Yes. If you grip a blade tight enough you will not cut your hand when using it to bludgeon someone. Movement of the blade is the thing to avoid. Half-swording is a thing, but I do not recommend doing it on a lark to test it out, just look up a video.

@@Jbot123 usually You would wear gloves on the battlefield, but it is possible without them. The trick is to either Grab it by the flat without touching the edge, or Grab it tightly, so that it doesnt move and slice. As soon as it starts moving a bit, it draws blood and gets slippery, which will make it move even more and it might slice right through your hand. But usually that shouldnt happen, especially with gladiuses, which werent tbe sharpest swords in the first place.

In the uncut version, there is a scene that explains the context of the soldiers not returning to the camping. Comodus executed 4 soldiers that told Maximus was dead. They actually knew the soldiers have not returned but they thought the soldiers were killed by barbarians when they were returning to the camping. Scene here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipCZoIagp9WreK8

Shawshank sin: How exactly does Andy, after crawling through a sewer and emerging in a rainstorm, manage to turn up at the bank the next morning impeccably groomed, not to mention dry? Yes, he has the warden's suit in a plastic bag, and a cake of soap in his pocket, but the practicalities stretch reality.

I just recently rewatched this movie and I guess I had nostalgia goggles on for 15 years because it's not nearly as good as I remember. I was so bored halfway through, I kept wondering how much longer until the end. I mean, it's an okay movie, but I guess the general appreciation from everybody has clouded me into thinking it was better than it actually was. I appreciate the re-upload, CinemaSins!

another sin is, in the scene when Comodus kills his father, where are the pretorian soldiers? they're just napping around or what? that scene is just like the other one in the movie Blade Runner(1982) when Roy easily kills Tyrell with no problem and with no high-powered weapon soldiers to avoid it.
@MrPaxonar

Well even though this part is fiction anyway it is still a son visiting a father. The Praetorian Guard would have no reason to believe that the emperor is in danger. Also it's not like they actually stared at the emperor 24/7. They would have been outside of his tent making sure nobody enters that shouldn't be in there and ready to be called upon by the emperor if needed. Plus you have to remember that this was a tent most likely surrounded by guards in the middle of an army camp after the enemy was defeated. There would be no reason to suspect anything could happen. Again he was his son, if it was anybody else I would have been there with you in making this a sin, as they would have accompanied the visitor inside.

I try to watch the ads to make sure the channel created gets some money for their efforts since I’m too cheap to pay myself. -1 sin: Rufus Sewell in "The Man In The High Castle". Check. And. Mate. -1 sin: Of course the lanista (gladiator owner) talks trash during purchase to drive the price down, but it's only natural to do the pepp talk later. Also, gladiators were well taken care of. Good food, spa treatment and so on. -1 sin: The lanista wants a return on his investment (with profit) so he can't just grant Maximus freedom like it's no big deal. -1 sin: There are rules to these fights so one on one fights are par for the course instead of several ganging up on one guy. +1 sin: No naval battles in the Colosseum. If James Cameron had directed it you'd be damn sure those would've been on screen with several underwater scenes. For symbolism or something...
