The title "Oculus" isn't referring to the Mirror, it's referring to the audience's sense of perception. The entire movie changes moments of time and settings to confuse us, and then asks the audience if the Mirror really is haunted, or if the two main characters are insane. Neither one can be proven to be correct, so it relies on your perception; thus, Oculus.

well the mirror bends reality,as you saw,while they we’re just chatting,after seeing a replay of the last minutes,the video showed them placing the cameras face to face and the plants and so on.So my guess is yes,ofc the cops would watch everything that they’ve recorded,but they would just see them acting crazy moving things around and running and screeming,at the end Tim killing Kaylie,cops seeing that Tim knew that Kaylie was in the front in the mirror,which he obv didn’t knew.This movie really gave me a hard thinking time haha,thinking about possibilities.Even if they would’ve smashed the mirror,how would they know if they actually did it?since they we’re doing something,but actually they were doing something else?(the positioning of the cameras is the best example).Overall,great movie,a pretty smart one compared to others,even if the ending was kind of a bummer and sad.

The point the characters actions was NOT to destroy the mirror, but to gather evidence that their father wasn't an insane ass-hole. Destroying the mirror really was just a fail safe, just in case gather evidence proved too much to be a risk.
@greyardwhite268310 жыл бұрын
craftyRingtail true but once they realise the Mirror can control them (when they moved the cameras without realising it) they have enough proof for *them* to belive it and since the brother is out of prison there is no reason to prove it to someone else so I *then* would have left the house
@Geminilion10010 жыл бұрын
That's the thing tho, it really is pointless for Kaylie to gather evidence to present to others. Her flaw as a character is the fact that she needlessly chases this pipe dream thinking that everything will be better if she shows the world what really happened, even endangering others to get what she wants. She keeps bringing up the past, and is completely unable to move on with her life. However this flaw as a character does not equal a flaw in the narrative, it is part of the narrative.

I enjoyed the film, never been a fan of gore or jumpscares (though this film does has some). I spent the first half questioning whether the sister was insane or the mirror was evil (I lean more on the brother's side), then the plot started to unfold and the true past kicked in, it became quite emotional. It's not in-your-face scary, it's just creepy - not knowing what is reality, proving something no one believes. But I value it for the psychological factor and how it makes me really feel for the characters. Not many horror movies can do that.
@StubbornProgrammer10 жыл бұрын
Every time I hear about one of these movies, I want to sit around with a bunch of smart-asses and figure out how to safely dispose of the evil in question. My first idea was using a spring punch to shatter the glass on the mirror. It's a tool that can't hurt people very efficiently (unlike, say, a heavy, pointy boat anchor), but it has the disadvantage of needing to be used at close range. But if the mirror is helpless while covered, that's easy to deal with. In fact, if the mirror is helpless while covered, the thing is a non-threat as soon as you figure that out. Just cover it, lay it down on some concrete and go to town with some sledgehammers. Maybe visit the Hawaiian volcanoes and accidentally drop it in lava. Step 1 - destroy demonic artifact, Step 2 - vacation! Heck, if it has a limited sphere of influence, just leave it out in an open field somewhere and have someone shoot at it. At best the mirror could make random animals jump in front of the shots, but those will run out eventually.

Oculus is probably my favorite horror movie ever, just cause I like the story and it manages to creeps you out without jumpscares (sure, there are jumpscares but the creepy atmosphere and the mirror were what scared me that most), which is different than most horror movies.
@StudlyFudd138 жыл бұрын
+Julliana Inding I just now watched this because if this cinemasins video. I am going to say I am a complete scared little child when it comes to horror and was pleasantly surprised when it had very little amounts of 'horror'. It instead had a good story, interesting characters, and small bits of horror. It made it very easy for me to watch. The ending was a bit too predictable though. Here's my question though....why not just smash it to start with? Who cares if you end up having to pay like $10k or whatever it was worth? If you have it covered up, it shouldn't be able to affect you. So drop kick that sucker....but oh well :/ That would have made the movie pointless so what do I know.

The parts of this movie I found the scariest was the domestic deterioration. Mainly because I can fortunately relate to it, when you're a kid and you feel like your own parents (the people you should look up to) are a danger to you, it is very scary. And the film captures that well. Also, not being in control of your own thoughts is quite scary too.

I really don't understand why demons in horror movies like to play with people so much ( hello paranormal activities!). It's like 90 minutes of foreplay with 30 seconds of sex.
@XBlueM0ndayX10 жыл бұрын
Maybe the demons need to wear down their victims before they can kill them? Or maybe they're just bored, I imagine being an immortal being that only gets a new victim once every few decades would be quite a boring existence. Gotta make it count

XBlueM0ndayX You have a point but the thing is: he\she killed 45 people in 400 years (1 for 10 years kinda). So if he enjoy so much torture he\she shouldn't kill at all, just enjoy torture for years. And i don't think they need something before kill the victims, after some days the demon could already control both the main characters with no problem.

I really do like this movie a lot. It has quite a lot of psychological twists and turns. Kaylie needs to try to destroy it with the "buddy system" because if there's no verification of its destruction, she will never know if she's living in a warped reality that the oculus is making her believe. Not only that, but when the mirror feels threatened, it can show you a reality to make you believe you are damaging it but instead, you are either standing around hallucinating (like in the final scene), or you are hurting yourself instead. The real horror of this movie is how human brains can't distinguish between reality and hallucinations. The same chemical is produced while dreaming as is when you're remembering. In court, witnesses are never as reliable as camera footage for that reason. And lawyers capitalize on that

Some of you need to understand that CinemaSins is not the final say-so on whether or not a movie is good. You need to watch movies and judge for yourself. CinemaSins' job is to literally make a movie look worse than it really is by using hateful and criticizing humor to nitpick the tiniest things most people never notice. Oculus is actually a good movie. It's not great, it does get confusing, but it is creepy and most certainly worth your watch and an actual opinion.

Personal opinion on horror movies: They scare you with jump scares, which is a normal human response. I don't really watch horror movies cause all they do is scare you with loud noises and stuff popping up at your face. I also don't get why some people laugh at others when they got scared due to this. Question: Is there a movie that scared you because of its plot and not jump scares?

I take issue with sins number 19 and 20. The mirror feeds on life energy, whether it is in plants or animals or human souls. When it feeds on plants, they die. When it feeds on animals, they disappear. When it feeds on people, they go crazy and eventually die too. So when she is asking it if it's hungry, then it is her teasing it for having gone a long time without killing anyone. She's crazy like that. Also, the mirror most likely is actually hurting from that crack. It avoids taking any real damage throughout the whole film, obviously because destroying the actual mirror would kill it, so the crack most likely does hurt.
