In the book, the dog was not his at first, he saw him around his property and realised he was not infected, spent ages trying to gain his trust and then the dog stopped showing up. Eventually he found the dog again, realised he had now become infected, gave him the cure he had been working on and the chapter ends with one short line: "Two week's later, the dog died". It was a true gut punch in the book. he finally found something that was not infected, he obsessed over it as the most important thing ever,, his heart broken to find out the dog was now infected, he worked hard to be able to get to the dog, subdue it, give it the cure and realise it did not work. One of the best chapters I have read in any book, completely undermined by this movie.

6:58 the soldiers drawing their weapons on eachother is actually a small but genius part of the writing that I believe is there intentionally. It shows the chaos and confusion of duty during a situation like this. One military detail has been assigned to protect Col Neville while the other has been assigned to stop anyone with possible symptoms from going across. Which is why when he tried to pull his wife over, the first soldiers drew their weapons on him and out of their duty to protect Col Neville, his security detail pulled their weapons in response.

BONUS SINS: In the original book, Neville does a ton more killing than healing (hence the genocide pictures in his basement), and in the final scene (where he blows up the infected with a grenade) instead he is brought into their society and executed by them, showcasing that he was in fact the monster, instead of the infected, and solidifying the name of the movie and book with this final line: "[I am] a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend." Neville was supposed to be tradition that ended evolution, and was a commentary on how time marches on, and what was once noble and righteous can become twisted and evil, even if the actions have not changed. This movie not only destroyed that point, but turned Neville into a martyr instead of allowing the audience to understand that even with good intentions, evil can be created Ding.

@AzureRoxe8 жыл бұрын
But the original ending is in the DVD, they just decided to use the stupid one. In the other ending, Smith's character Neville realizes that these creatures DO have some humanity left and the reason they're attacking is because the alpha male is looking for the girl creature that Neville captured. He lets her go and the creatures leave. In our ending, he blows them all up AND himself because.......idk, Michael Bay took over for a second or something.

The biggest sin is the ending. The alt ending shows that the zombie Neville captured and 'cured' earlier on is in fact the Alpha female. The alpha male is only trying to get her back, showing that the zombies are not mindless, but are an organised subspecies of humanity. Furthermore, the fact that he has killed hundreds of their kind makes HIM the monster, not the zombies. A brilliant twist, but sadly we had to go for "Zombies are evil, lets kill them indiscriminately."

I liked this movie for a while and liked it even more when I saw the alternate ending, but after hearing what the book was really about, they never explained what the title means. just saying, the creatures in I Am Legend were "supposed" to be vampires, not zombies. that's why they are called "hemocytes", which, I accept your literal translation as true. I guess they were trying to be clever by working "blood" into the name. spoiler alert and in the ending of the actual book, it is revealed they still retained their intelligence and their sentience and had created their own society. when Neville was going around in the day, killing them, they started to imagine him as a monster. most of them had never seen him and would create myths and stories about this monster that stalks them by day and murders them. when they finally capture him, they put him on trial for what he did and sentence him to death and only then does he realize that this world no longer has a place for humans. the vampires were now the dominant species on earth and the humans were all but extinct, except for Neville. and Neville would die now, becoming nothing but ....A Legend. hence the name , I Am Legend

2:13 I’m sure it’s been pointed out but the time overlay on the news reels he’s watching indicate that it’s probably archived/indexed “raw footage”. Meaning it’s likely that he went to the studio and retrieved these recordings. And we don’t have to wonder if he’s the type of person to do this... based upon everything that he has and the amount of time he’s been combing the city, and with his research with making the cure, it’s not unlikely that he would want to know if there were any known indicators or signs as to what went wrong and when people first realized it. And while, you could argue that the news isn’t the best place to do this, I think watching the news is a bit of a cathartic experience for him. Like it reminds him of the time before this, or makes the atmosphere feel matter-of-fact and normal. Meaning it makes sense both his viewing the footage (imagine how much news coverage this story (curing cancer) would have gotten... I’m sure he has thousands of hours of footage from several different NY-based stations.
@brockolsen36897 жыл бұрын
2:15 - Dr. Neville didn't record a bunch of news because he knew he would one day be the last person in the world and would want to watch old newscasts for clues about the apocalypse. The TCR scrawled across the screen in the videos means Time Code Reading, which is used in editing videos before they are broadcast, the videos most likely came from the news station's own video library . . . which makes perfect sense3:15 - He didn't "confiscate the Brownstone", he lived in it before the apocalypse . . . notice his daughter's bedroom, with all her stuff still in it. Also, in the first flashback scene he pulls up in front of the Washington Square Arch (the same one that is shown getting blown to shit when the vampires attack his home), and meets his family coming down the stairs of that same house. Also, he is a military virologist so even if he didn't have that lab in his basement to begin with, he certainly had access to everything he would need to build said lab 4:06 - did you not watch the flashback scenes? The military blew up the bridges as part of their quarantine attempt, it was actually what was responsible for the helicopter crash that killed his family, kind of an important plot point, pay attention 8:40 - that wasn't a flashback, that was Anna driving him away from the pier

The covering over the buildings(to contain the virus in the building) is a reflection on how frightened and desperate society would be in the face such a horrific outbreak. The soldiers drew their weapons towatds each other because they were frightened and on edge, because they were torn between duty and a natural desire to desert and go home to their families and friends during a terrifying and unprecedented crisis. The dog hearing the infected outside the house would certainly bark causing the infected to possibly investigate neville's home(a clear plot hole).He doesn't get another dog because like most dog owners he loves her and considers her family and they may not be as common as you think, domestic animals would easy picking for the infected.The bridges and tunnels were destroyed by the military to quarintine the city.(no shit?) The infected sleep standing up, Why? probably to make them even creepier and less human. In "The Omega Man" (1971) the infected were far more sofisticated. The infected set up the trap that caught neville, so the infected are barely human yet still intelligent. When Neville says he's not going to let this happen to anna, he's talking about the total extinction of humanity, he correctly believes there's still time to save our species. Anna believes the colony exists for the similar reasons neville doesn't, she needs it to be there for hope, he needs it not to be there for hope, so he can stay on his purpose in new york to find a cure. If he believed there were a colony of people just a couple of hundred miles away he might be tempted to leave it all behind and go there to join them. Neville talks the infected near the end probably for the same reasons buildings were covered in plastic: fear, desperation, an irrational attempt to fix a horrific problem.

3:13- he probably has a lab because he built it years before the virus, he was apart of the military after all. 4:32- he could find another dog, but that one dog has meaning to him. He was the only other family he had after his wife and daughter died. 8:01- he probably cuddled him because he was feeling scared and sad cause he knew that his dog was pretty much already dead. Yes, he could've found a less painful, more quicker way to kill him, but it makes sense why he cuddled him then killed him.
@andrassalfay586911 ай бұрын
about the lab also...i don't think its impossible either :D It is shown in the movie several times that he is obsessed with details, precision and has enormous amount of patience and perseverance. He basically wen't crazy because of this, he just cannot stop. A man like that can achieve a lot in a matter of weeks, not years, even if he started from scratch. I don't think he HAD a lab before the virus, why would he, at his own house? Same with the water heaters, yes, he probably installed them with lots of effort, and yes, he needed all. There is winter there in NYC :D And energy does not come from thin air...so that's a sin off too I think. Also the orgy of evidence in the movie -when he goes around abandoned houses- states that the virus does not killed everyone overnight. There was months of struggle where people hoarded resources - that's why he can find them in houses- and probably time for different kind of levels of actions from the military. One of them could possibly be providing him with said laboratory... ofc it's bullshit, cause it's not a wishing game at that point :DDD He would have been transported INSTANTLY to a secure facility, with his whole family. But..then the plot could not happen. :D So all in all, I think it's well written, if we can just enjoy the atmosphere and assume that we don't know shit about military and viruses and less about laboratories. :DDD And I'm sure we actually don't :)

He makes the dog food with such resolve because the last thing his daughter did for him was give it to him and tell him to take care of him. That's also why he chases the dog into the building. The way I saw it, the dog is Robert's daughter in his mind.

I always thought it was obvious too, especially in light of the extremely sophisticated trap set up to catch Neville. That shit was mind fucking at its finest. It always disturbed me that it wasn't addressed in the theatrical release, and the deleted scene/alt ending didn't set it right either.

you sinned the fact he had recorded TV broadcasts? did you not see the constant time stamp on the footage, clearly it's the studio's own recording, they do keep records, he's alone, he obviously just went down to the studio & grabbed like a months worth of tapes so he'd have TV.

3:03 it does state later some people were immune. Hence why he was so dedicated to finding a cure. Explains why he built a lab, which when you think about everything being free and his previous knowledge about medicine doesn't make a home lab a sin. Also the few people who were immune died from being physically attacked. It also explains the camp that the two found at the end.

Something you kind of skipped over is the ending, which had a much better deleted scene version that didn't include Neville pointlessly blowing himself up (so actually was EEEEVER so slightly closer to the source book's point about becoming a legend in the eyes of the non-human beings). Basically another sin for choosing a worse ending. *Ding*.
@elstormo8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, the idiotically unnecessary protagonist death is one of the most-maligned useless deaths in film. He basically sacrifices himself (and the cured vampire lady!) for no reason at all.
@blasterdude38 жыл бұрын
I sort of assumed it was so the not-zombies couldn't follow them.
@elstormo8 жыл бұрын
blasterdude3 Yes, yes, but why does he stand around with the grenade instead of just going down the hatch with the others and throwing it from there? There's literally no reason for him to die along with the zombies.
@PaintedHoundie8 жыл бұрын
and it paints him as some sacrificial hero which is the opposite moral of the book. he's the legend, because he's the monster to the zombies. the same way we envision legendary, menacing beasts that are worthy of being vanquished and defeated are how he is viewed to "them". he's killed so many of their kind he's the villain to them. the alternate ending is a little cooler but im pretty sure he dies in the book.
@KneelB4Bacon8 жыл бұрын
In the movie he becomes a "legend" simply because he discovers the cure for zombie/vampires in what seems to be a complete accident. In the book, we find out during the story that not all of the vampires are feral. During Neville's daily vampire hunts, he has been unknowingly killing intelligent, sane vampires in addition to the completely feral ones. Neville is a "legend" because humans are now in the minority. He is the boogyman in this newly emerging vampire society, a scary story that the parents will tell their children. It's a very downbeat ending.

A lot of Neville's behavioral quirks can be explained by long-term trauma and sustained isolation. He's sane enough to know the mannequins aren't real, but by constructing a veneer of normalcy he can maintain what sanity he's got. Then the survivors come in and pretty much totally upend the world and rationalizations he constructed for himself. This narrative arc works better with the original ending (where the hemocytes are shown to be sentient and he is the monster in the night, metaphorically, which in the original story was a brilliant twist on the standard post-apoc lone survivor plot), but because it didn't test well his story ended with him blowing himself up in a cliche'd sacrifice, having learned nothing, and it comes off more like Neville simply can't accept the new status quo the other two survivors introduced.
