The zoomer energy is killin' me in this comment section. I think there's an incorrect focus on difficulty and challenge. Jay (and others advocating for the original appeal of minecraft) don't want the game to be "harder", although it can seem that way. The challenges in old minecraft weren't harder, they were different. It was a different kind of fun, and it's a massive missed opportunity to not have that experience in the game as some other gamemode or something. What I miss most about older versions of Minecraft is the incentive to build practically. When you wanted to set out to build a lava moat in alpha, it was as a genuine practical decision to keep monsters away, and you had to consider the logistics of how to do it in your unique world in a way that would work against the enemies, while also having a way around it yourself. Now, you do it cuz it looks cool. There's no soul behind it. I don't even see people thinking of a lava moat idea anymore because the idea of defending your base doesn't matter. This isn't about challenge, cuz that part of the game was really fun! And that fun is just gone now. People say new minecraft better supports a game about exploration and building. They're right about the first part, but I could not disagree more with the second. Alpha made you want to build, modern minecraft assumes you already want to. I just feel like that old experience could and should exist in modern minecraft, side by side with modern minecraft and its strengths. There's so many new things that would be so cool if added to an older, survival-ier game. Potion brewing would be way more useful, and thus building farms for potion supplies would be in demand which means more reasons to expand your base, including into The Nether! Traveling to find the Stronghold would be a lot more of a planned task, you'd want to map your path of travel and maybe build checkpoints along the way to stay safe during the night, which would naturally expand your base and make creating secondary outposts connected to your core a natural part of the experience.

Another example is building railways, with the introduction of horses, ice boats, and elytra into the game it's just utterly useless. Sure, it has an advantage is that it can be automated, but that's it. It's not great for actually travelling from base A to base B because it's only slightly faster than sprinting and looks like an absolute tortoise when compared to other methods of transport. And you need tons of iron and gold. It only looks cool and has zero actual practical use
@Jdudec367

people still do the moat thing to keep monsters away actually. I would say there is still soul behind it. Honestly alpha just makes you want to protect yourself. Modern minecraft more so actually makes you want to build with all the options you got and how you can still improve your defenses. There still is soul behind it. There is still some challenge as well. I think it would be nice for that old experience to exist in modern Minecraft though.

Oh hey, I just realized something! This video is mostly about survival in the overworld, and why it was better in alpha. Some of the reasons are that food was harder to get, and was unstackable, mobs were stronger and faster compared to you, and you couldn'tt sleep. I think the new Nether covers most of these. You have very few sources of food, like hoglins, that are hard to kill, and mushroom stew, which is unstackable. As for the enemies, Piglins and hoglins are incredibly fast, even if you're sprinting, and they can destroy you in seconds. You can wear gold armor do de-aggro the piglins, but that will make you more vulnerable to other forms of damage. Skeletons are even more dangerous, since you will encounter them in soul sand valleys, where you are forced to slow down by soul sand. Also, you can't sleep. You have respawn anchors, but they can't "skip the night". You might even argue that you are forced to build cleverly. You need to make enclosed tunnels, so ghasts don't see you, and you could build a clever trap for zombie piglins, if you aggro one on accident. And there's plenty of challenge to go around, like bastions and fortresses. Sure, you don't "need" to do it, but you also don't "need" to do anything in alpha other that spend all your time in a dirt hole. So yeah, Nether's kinda like alpha, I guess.

What's also worth mentioning about beds is that in older versions, if you didn't build a competent house around your bed, you couldn't sleep. (Well, you COULD, but a mob would just spawn on you, waking you up and beating the hell out of you. No time would pass, you'd just voluntarily get ambushed.) Now, you can literally just take a bed with you and sleep during sunset. No mobs will ever spawn.

Just a comment about the building section: The reason why many, including myself, build in survival and not creative is because it’s more rewarding. If you build a massive fancy base in creative you go, “ok, I built that and have no use for it ON TO THE NEXT THING.” In survival, if you build said massive base, you feel a sense of accomplishment, as you had to gather all the materials either by spending hours gathering them or spending hours building a farm and then afking at the farm. You then have to place everything *without* flying, which can be challenging. When you’re done, you actually have a use for the massive structure (hopefully) and it’s more impressive, as you had to go through the aforementioned survival grind. People also become more attached to survival worlds than creative ones, and sometimes use their survival builds for years, whereas in creative you have time world for maybe a month then you forget about it. I would comment on the rest of the vid but it’s 1 am and I’m too lazy.

True but that also depends on the person. Sometimes you just wanna go to creative and express yourself however u like without the struggle like painting on a canvas but u have all the colors there instead of going to get the colors. You made me realize: if Minecraft had stuck to surviving being the entire goal, its fame would've died many years ago. Minecraft, after the alpha phase, began finding its appeal on the creatures, the biomes, the items or blocks you could obtain, the exploration, etc. It just had the potential of being more than only being able to survive. I agree that the term "survival" doesn't really apply anymore. It's just that the game needed a change of focus that resulted more appealing to keep its popularity for longer. Which isn't necessarily bad.
@editazilinskyte3681

Yes. I agree with the video regarding the game not being much about survival really. As survival is quite easy. The only challanges you face are the nether and bosses which you don't HAVE to partake in. But I would say the game is still fun. Sure when I first started I would hide in a dirt hole the whole night. And make a glass dome around my base so that the monsters can't get to me. And although now I don't even bother closing the door to my base because I just don't care if a mob gets in I wouldn't say the game is boring. I still find motivation to explore and build. And honestly things might be better this way. Where I can do what I choose and not worry much about anything else. Rather than haulting my progress because I'm afraid of the night.

@forrestgorby1109 4 жыл бұрын
George Zubat Honestly, a significant amount of evidence supports my claim. This video, while not directly centered around showing how minecraft is less about surviving and more about farms/creative expression, suggests this. Minecraft used to be about surviving. Now it is obviously not. If you play it that way, you are inherently playing it wrong. While this is not bad in and of itself, it definitely can make the game boring and make you feel like you are not accomplishing anything. How's that for "stupid."

@forrestgorby1109 4 жыл бұрын
George Zubat Of course I see your point. When creating a game, you can never make it fun for everyone. Like you said, people's likes and dislikes are subjective. A developer's job as appealing to the mass market. Minecraft does this not by focusing on it's 2010 survival aspect, but the new mechanics implemented into the game that have evolved it into a very nuanced and complicated video game. This appeals to the mass market. I have not met someone up until now that does not enjoy or excell at SOMETHING in this "new wave minecraft." A game like this simply cannot turn back around and revert to pre 2012 gameplay at this point. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you have disliked every single new Minecraft update, as seen in your first comment. Although in my opinion this is silly, I guess to each their own. But what I'm trying to tell you is that there is no way Minecraft can become what it used to be anymore unless you load up an alpha world. It just simply wouldn't work. It wouldn't appeal to the mass market. A game that has 10+ years of existence must always evolve in order to stay relevant. Look at runescape. If you have taken econ, it's like stocks. A company needs to renew every ~10 years to keep investors intrigued.

This exact reason is why I like modpacks. The core survival gameplay loop has been lost for a long time. But plenty of people still play survival because like you said, it adds challenge and engaging elements of building that you can't find in creative. Most of modded minecraft pretty much goes all in on this gameplay loop. It's all about automating, getting materials, learning new things to improve, and more. All of the remaining best gameplay loops of minecraft are perfectly aligned with the gameplay of a lot of modded minecraft. It takes that alignment and those gameplay loops and ramps it up to 11. I honestly feel like minecraft should've committed to a good modding api/platform, and then stopped updating. Although I obviously like things that have been added, and the modded community has done great on it's own, it just seems like a missed direction that should've been taken a long time ago.

I like your point, but it mainly covers how it takes a lot of work to build a desired structure. I think part of what Jay is expressing is that Minecraft's nightlife is nothing to really fear, therefore the incentive to build a large safe zone is reduced, when instead survival and building should compliment one another and even play off of each other.

Honestly I don't know if this is weird but I never really thought of Survival Mode as an actual survival game. This may be because I didn't play until 1.7, but I always thought of it more as a limit on your resources that forces you to go out and adventure to collect than a true survival experience. Now that you bring it up, however, I could see this being a reason I've never done a bunch of survival, as I didn't feel encouraged to do many of the things that make Minecraft fun.

I personally (as someone who started playing in early beta) find the new healing system way more difficult to contend with than the old version. Back then, as long as you had food you could just instantly heal to full. Get in a scrap? Disengage for a few seconds scarf down a bunch of food and you're full health again. Compared to now where eating a) takes a second to do and slows you while you are doing it b) doesn't instantly heal you, therefore you are still in danger. Also, while food was not stackable, wheat was stackable up to 64. All you needed to do was keep a stack of wheat, and a crafting table (2 slots) and you had all the food you needed. Additionally, you were eating much less often because the only cause for eating was the taking damage where as now you need to keep your hunger up from running swimming jumping etc

"hardcore" is really easy beds completely invalidate what makes the overworld so scary, and one of the MAIN REASONS YOU DIE IN THE OVERWORLD is because of the stuff that comes at night, the thing you skip, by using a bed. In the Nether you should be careful in anyway, regardless of game mode, since you lose everything in any game mode if you die in lava the only thing that's kinda hard because of perma death is the end, but it's not THAT much harder. Honestly, the problem with Hardcore is that beds exist and completely invalidate the need to be careful in the overworld, since most of what kills you only comes out at night. If beds didn't skip the ENTIRE night then I could understand, but in its current state, hardcore is just normal minecraft but you have to sleep more often.

Slight correction to be made here: Taking damage is more of a problem than I initially thought as it causes the player's hunger bar to go down faster. This means taking damage causes you to expend a resource you wouldn't otherwise so consider that detail in the video corrected. The system still has its issues and still isn't the much clearer cut precise healing we had in alpha but it's not as bad as I thought it was... although this kind of thing really should be communicated to the player better.

It’s for version 1.7.10 and is on the technic launcher, and it is one of the best versions of minecraft that I’ve ever played. It has compelling story, extremely difficult gameplay, and it even has a clear end goal. Minecraft has never really been about survival to me. Let's face it, surviving was cake even in alpha. It might not have felt like it because you were worse at the game back then. To me the game is all about creativity, and survival adds a grind that makes it more rewarding. This is why I think almost every update has made the game better. The game could be a lot harder sure, but I've played it so much that it probably doesn't matter at this point. The challenge of survival doesn't offer the same longevity in my opinion, and it's gonna get repetitive at some point no matter what. I try to challenge myself by making bigger and better things, be they builds or redstone projects. Remember the trailer? "Build everything you want. Day or night, rain or shine. Edit: 3 months later I revisit this comment and it makes me cringe. It seems that past me coulden't get the point across that most of the ideas that I had were intended as in-game difficulty "sliders" (for a lack of a better word). What I had in mind was a bunch of options that would allow you to increase game's difficulty in interesting ways, that only mods currently provide. Basically, you could recreate "Rebirth of the Night" modpack but fine-tune different features or disable them outright, such as: return of 'Chad Spider': Spiders become as terrifying as they are in real life (quick zoomers) Tracking Creeper AI: Creepers track your last known position they saw you at, and if they think you attempted escape by digging underground, they explode atop Peaceful surface (during day only): Receive Darkwood experiance (maybe included should be ability to edit mob stats and behaviour beforehand?) That's what I wanted to get across, only ingame features that you can turn on/off before making a new world. Old comment: --- So we could make 'normal' or 'hard' difficulty reintroduce some features from alpha versions and some new ones? - zombies which move as fast as a sprinting player - skeletons take longer to shot, but have way better accuracy, requiring you to have a shield or frantically build around yourself, fortnite style - if creepers SEE you trying to hide into a hole (that is, digging underground or into a mountain, trying to cheeze the night) they would walk up to that spot and blow up - bring back chad spider - when the sunrise is about to begin, all mobs that burn in the sunlight, stop hunting you and bolt for the nearest dark spot (prefering caves over tree shade) edit: Why do they run away? To give the player some breathing room. Think of it as Dark Woods (an amazing horror game) type night and day cycle Likewise we could improve 'easy' mode: - mobs, during the day, only spawn underground. they spawn above ground normally during the night - creepers are louder - skeletons don't try to avoid you (moving away from you, or running to the left or right of you if you have a shield and are really close to them) - spiders stay virgins That's all I have

Plus, harder difficulties could capitalize on the progressive intensity in survival mode. @Charnutboy
@Charnutboy 4 жыл бұрын
@@CherryFlavoredAntAss True, I know progressive intensity is already in survival mode. But the feature still seems very underdeveloped to me. While mobs with enchanted gear and armor become more likely in the chunk the player is in over time, they never feel properly scaled up to the player themselves. I still rarely see zombies or skeletons in iron armor on my month-old hardcore world where I have fully enchanted diamond gear. Hell, I've only seen one naturally spawning diamond skeleton period. Now, I know that this is just from my experience and all, and I'm definitely not saying that you should see a horde of fully enchanted diamond zombies at night, but it would be nice if they dialed up the progressive intensity even more for the hard and hardcore modes so that at least iron armor and gear becomes more common on hostile mobs. Coupled with the changes Silver mentioned, it would give more challenge to those who really want it.

I think part of the issue is that the game's core focus has shifted from a block based survival game to a block based adventure game with survival elements. While I know that the video is saying that alpha mc was harder and there for more fun, I've found that playing modern mc on hard mode or even hard core really brings back that sense of danger to the nights and highlights the survival aspects. It's similar but different.

Very interesting video on what's probably my favorite game ever. However I feel like you neglected some aspects of the problem, so I'm gonna give my 2 cents about it. First, eating now makes you vulnerable by slowing you down a few seconds, preventing you from attacking or defending and don't heals you instantly anymore which imo creates far more tense situations than the old food system in terms of health management. Second I think you underestimate how good you became at the game, I replayed alpha recently and it really was a piece of cake once re-accustomed to the bad ergonomy and stuff, the gameplay itself didn't really stroke me as more challenging. Third, while I do agree with the fact that surviving the night is now quite trivial, I think it's only true for seasoned player, I watched inexperienced player of modern Minecraft going through the exact same feelings of dread/stress when the night fall as I did 10 years ago. Now surviving the night is part of the learning curve of the game, instead of being that "just don't" thing. Finally, it's not that hard to recreate a similar experience in modern Minecraft : disabling the gamerule "Natural Regeneration" forces you use a full beacon, golden apples or potions to regenerate health, basically putting you in the same situation of unstackable instant health item. The hardcore difficulty is also interesting and really makes you glad for all those modern change of survival Minecraft. I have played in hardcore mode with no natural regeneration for a while now, and it's really effective in creating a challenging experience with a very tough early game and an end game that still has stakes. But yeah we desperately need that cave update.

I think disabling natural regeneration runs into the problem of the easiest way to regain your health _at all_ requiring an extreme amount of work, as to get health potions you are absolutely required to first locate and then navigate a Nether Fortress and kill blazes, all parts of which are very taxing for your health bar. It's not the same as in alpha since in alpha you had easy healing options readily available, you just couldn't carry a lot of them with you at once. This could of course be fixed by adding an easily-acquired but not stackable (or make it stack in 8 or 16) source of small regeneration, like bandages craftable from wool for example.
@Gwynplain
@Gwynplain 4 жыл бұрын
@@houndofculann1793 Yeah it's definitively harder than alpha, but it's a good alternative for experienced players looking for a more challenging survival mode. However now that you can found watermelon in the wild it's far easier than it once was. You can get a bunch of blaze rods in less than an hour by rushing nether with iron stuff, shields are cheap and make the fortress super easy ; bring a slime ball, water bottles, cobblestone and a bit of redstone and you just need 2 rod to be completely fireproof, after that you can farm easily. It might also be possible to tinker something with a datapack/command block to recreate the food system of Minecraft alpha with modern Minecraft.

I want to put my point of view about your comment. 1. Yeah you are vulnerable while eating but it doesn't make a difference, you could sprint if you are surrounded by enemies and if you are in a cave you can build a wall to protect yourself. 2. Don't you think the game should be difficult for all players instead of just Newbies? Think about other survival games like terraria or don't starve, in those games is hard to survive even if you have experience, sure you will know how to avoid threads but you can die very easily 3. If you have to artificially make the game more difficult or play on hardcore to make the game hard it means that the survival mode should be touched don't you think

Here’s my solution to this. For hunger and holes. I’m not sure. But for sprinting and beds. Here’s my idea. Sprinting stays the same. But mobs will act differently. They will also sprint when the player sprints. Except for nether mobs. The nether is already dangerous enough. Skeletons will sprint at the player will shoot bows faster. Creepers will also explode faster. As for beds. I think the radius for a mob to be in in order to not let players sleep in should be increased just a bit. And the time that the player can sleep should be increased so they can only sleep when the sun is fully down. That way the player will have to kill all the mobs first before sleeping. As for phantoms. I’m not sure. But there is an old feature where if the player sleeps in an open area. There will be a chance for a zombie to spawn. I think this should be readded. But phantoms spawn instead. There are also shields which are very op. I think a simple solution to this is for shields to only work 75% of the time. They’ll also slow down the player. And can break from big explosions. Modern Minecraft is more focussed on exploration. So I think that there should be a balance between survival and exploration. Also, if Mojang is “too scared” to add all this stuff. Then I think there should be a super hard mod that adds all these things. As well as making the game harder the more the player progress.

Lots of good discussion in the comments, but I want to talk specifically about the idea that survival and difficulty focused mods for Minecraft bring back this survival style gameplay that alpha had. While I agree these mods are awesome I think part of the underpinnings of what makes alpha so special is its simplicity. You have deep decision making and gameplay without piles and piles of different mechanics. Alpha takes a very minimalist approach to what it needs to create a compelling survival experience. For example consider the hostile mobs. You have a generic one (zombie), a ranged one (skeleton), a fast one (spider), and an extra dangerous explosion one (creeper). That's all you need. Every mob serves a different, easy to identify purpose with one defining characteristic mechanically. Same goes for food. Food essentially has two "stats": ease of creation, and health healed. That's all alpha needed, wanted, and used to make each food item distinct. It is this minimalism that these mods lack. That's not to say they aren't good in their own right, but I think toting them as a solution to "fixing" modern Minecraft being bad at survival is partially missing the beauty of the survival gameplay in alpha.

Kind of hit the nail on the head, at least for me. That idea of a new survival experience sounds cool, but things like RL craft really just make things seem so damn complicated for the purpose of being complicated (I haven't played it, so take my words with several tons of salt). Some people may like that, but I just can't get into it. The alphas though? It was a challenge, to be sure, but a clearly laid-out challenge. My personal ideal would be for a new "classic" gamemode. A lot of the new things (terrain, biomes, food variety, the newer nether and end, basically anything that has to do with how the world around you generates and what it has to offer) are still included, but it's back to basics in terms of food (it wouldn't stack), health (hunger is removed and health doesn't regen), and sprint are all removed. Change the mob ai to be a bit more aggressive and keep the current player combat mechanics, and I think it would be a pretty solid mode.

About the criticism on hunger there's an interesting solution to this with the game mode Ultimate Hard Core where food doesn't heal you, only edible items with regeneration or healing effects can heal you. Now I don't think this counts as 100% vanilla but I don't think it needs any external mods if you want to play on this game mode. In the early game this becomes a problem since you need an inventory slot for normal food and another for the regen effect food, usually in the form of suspicious stews that aren't stackable. This problem is significantly decreased once you're able to farm golden apples but that's extremely late game imo, since you need enough farmer villagers and a high yield gold farm. Or alternatively a regen beacon. All these being very late game and challenging. Also I would make a comment about survival building is better than creative building (as a survival builder myself) but there are better comments about it so I'll just sum up my thoughts. Creative building is when you photoshopped your dream house in five minutes, survival building is when you come home from a stressful grocery trip fighting off sea monsters just so you can have a pretty black prismarine roof. Sure it's better to cheat prismarine in, but you can't call that roof yours until you almost died for it.

I've heard these types of arguments before, and, though I agree that Minecraft is a bad SURVIVAL game, I feel as if the game's focus has shifted to be more about HOW MUCH you can overtake the world around you, as opposed to IF you can overtake the world around you. Whenever I start a world, I often set out a goal for how my designs can be efficient and easily expandable so I can continue adding new additions like farms, crafting rooms, redstone stuff, etc. This focus on expansion also means that I try to mine as much of the world as I can, leaving a large cavern of wasted time at y11. Hell, in my recent world, I decided to do the whole thing with a MC hacked client so all these things can be done at an increased speed, though I acknowledge that's not a core mechanic and thus it doesn't effect my point. I feel as if Minecraft is less linear and more freeform than it used to be, while sacrificing it's difficulty, which is really fun by me. All that said, I almost never use beds, so you've got me there lol

Jokes on you: started playing on Alpha 1.0 in July of 2010, so no, you haven't played longer than me :P But yeah, I totally agree that the "survival" mode in modern minecraft is not really a survival game. Anyone who vehemently disagrees with this is operating on a different definition of "survival." I would contend though that there's still plenty of reason to play in Survival if you want to build rather than playing in creative. There is still more of a problem solving element to survival than there is in creative. You don't need furnace arrays for processing ores or farms for renewable resources in Creative, you just have them. And while there's no where near the challenge of surviving in modern minecraft as there was in Alpha, there's still challenge in building large structures and complex redstone contraptions that's fundamentally different from creative. In general, I agree with your points about beds, mobs, and the hunger system. "Exploration" is probably a better title for the current "Survival," since it really isn't very survival oriented. And if you want a more "Survival Experience" you definitely should go back to the pre-beds era to explore Minecraft around those times.

Mojang: We heard some complaints about Minecraft's survival mode so we made it harder! Skeleteons now shoot 10 arrows per seconds, baby zombies are 2x faster and spawn in hordes of 20, spiders have more health and do more damage and creepers explosions are 5x times stronger. Additionally, endermen are even faster and more aggressive. Also Mojang: We forgot about villagers, who now have doubled their prices, that food rots, all ores are 250% rarer, all armor stats have been halved, you get hungry faster, and the player only has 5 health.

I feel like the whole death system is flawed. If you die far away from your home, you’re basically screwed unless you took a picture of your coordinates. Also, if you fall in lava, your items are gone forever. It can make one simple death extremely demotivating, causing you to even quit a world depending on the type of player you are, or even convince you to cheat your way back to normal with creative.

shields are super OP in minecraft right now. I remember learning a few things about the new combat update but I don't remember if they were significantly nerfed. I don't think they were. They're cheap as heck, don't take up any slots that do anything except for them (such as an inventory or even hotbar slot), and offer more protection than any armor as long as you're actually using them, and they're incredibly durable such that even if they weren't cheap to make they'd still be cheap on the whole because you hardly ever need to replace one. Its like a chestplate that costs a tenth of the resources for four times the protection and it stacks on all the existing armor already in the game

In short: -Current food system = too easy to heal quickly. -Mobs = too easy. -Caves = Boring. -Sprinting = too easy to escape from mobs. Personally, I'm quite a fan of the current food system but I can see how it can be used to cheese through challenges. The fact that food takes time to eat and you to heal means you've basically got to take breaks from fighting, but enemies don't let you take a break unless you get far enough away or have made yourself a hiding spot. Food other than golden apples being able to be eaten and allow the player to just stand there as they get beaten up but be fine cos they're eating is nonsense tho. It seems largely to just be a way for pvp-obsessors to get back into the fighting and last longer, but really the length of a fight should be due to both fighters being around the same skill and equipment levels. Mobs: Yesn't. They're easy if you're experienced at the game, but new players do generally struggle a great deal. The new skeletons are utterly ruthless, but once you get to know them you're on easy street. My idea for how to improve this would be for nights to get harder as time passes: higher odds of having gear that they can use against you, higher stats, larger numbers, and even mobs appearing that never did before. Eventually, this could hit a point when there are some hostile mobs that spawn in the day as well. I'd put forward the idea of making this slow enough for players to not really notice it: you're used to getting creepers down in a sprint hit and a jump hit and then BANG one day you start encountering ones with enough health that this no longer works: you've got to rethink your ways around situations because mobs are continually getting tougher. Actually, for the sake of encouraging ingenuity, I'd put forward the idea of mobs not changing very much, but there being far more different mobs that can spawn, but in unpredictable cycles (a cycle is decided by your world, but you don't know which one) of which mobs will and won't spawn and how strong etc they'll be. Even if you get a zombie-only night, that night has a tonne of zombies due to them taking up the spawns that would've gone to other mobs. Also instead of phantoms appearing when you don't sleep, they should spawn every time you do (except maybe the first or second time), with them being redubbed as creatures from your nightmares. Also of course they should be fireproof to further accommodate this. The more times in a row you sleep the larger the phantom hordes, which could eventually lead to a boss battle when the THICC phantom shows up. Since phantoms are actually difficult AF to beat there shouldn't really be any phantoms other than the base one and boss phantom. Caves become far, far more dangerous in this scenario, especially over time, encouraging the player to rush to get resources and place torches underground as quickly as possible. Strip mining could break this but - and hear me out here - what if silverfish spawned everywhere rather than just in hilly areas? Or there were structures at the strip mining level containing dangerous mobs? So, caves have been made harder by these new mobs - but what if there were mobs that only spawned at the surface rather than underground, and then ones that only spawned underground? A really easy way to do this would just be making it so that they can only spawn if there's a stone block above their head, which would also encourage the player to terraform caves to prevent or encourage the spawning of these mobs. There could even be ones that only spawn within a certain range of ores, such as diamond being surrounded by mobs that are quite difficult to kill so you've got to work for your gems. This would also make silk touch cooler as taking ores as they are could be used for farming these mobs. Of course, introduce all sorts of new muckery from cave generation, just to make things more interesting. Stalagmites and so on would be utterly glorious. Caves filled with "poisonous gas" that give the poison effect for 2 seconds every second someone spends in there, which'd pair nicely with making parrots breedable and useable as cave-testing cannonfodder so the player has to choose between being a scumbag and having a hard time (they have no use besides looking cool and, if you tame enough of them, soaking up arrows from enemies). Sprinting is simple: once a mob has detected you, it never un-detects you unless another player comes into their range afterwards. Yep, by running around in that giant circle you've just created a vast horde of zombies, skeletons, creepers and spiders that want a piece of that booty. Now you can either fight off a huge horde or keep running till daylight, at which point you've now just got an even larger spider+creeper horde to worry aboot. Making there an actual reason to take out spiders beyond their string such as them laying eggs, say, cave spider eggs, would also be really fun. If the spiders actually went into shady areas to do this it'd be really fun too. Certain mobs should have hunger bars. Wolves only kill sheep and rabbits when they're hungry. Sheep etc will starve if their pen doesn't have grass or haybales, etc. Now this is where it gets fun: spiders could have hunger bars too. When they're hungry, they kill nearby animals. The player can kill the spiders to keep the animals. The player has to kill any spiders near their animal pens, or go through the effort of making their pens spider-proof, to protect their animals. This can get even better if, say, spiders lay eggs in proportion to how much they eat, so if you don't keep your livestock safe you return to a pen full of spiders. Kissing girls is gay and thank you for coming to my TED talk.

every mob in the game back then had a very specific threat and set of strengths, weaknesses, and rewards for killing them that forced players to prioritize and strategize. Zombies were hard-hitting melee enemies and had about the same speed as the player, or a bit slower, my memory's foggy. They rewarded players that killed them with feathers, which were exclusively used to make arrows. They were the lowest threat for the most part, and ultimately dropped what's arguably the least useful item Spiders put pressure on the player because they were the fastest in the game and the most agile, forcing the player to confront them if they went venturing into the night. They dropped string, used to make a bow to massively increase your ability to defend yourself. Creepers are insanely quiet but slower than the player. They were the ambush enemies that would blow you and probably part of your base up, forcing you to repair it, assuming you didn't die first. If you managed to kill them first, they dropped gunpowder, which could be used to make TNT. probably, I'm not even sure if it was in the game at this point. And skeletons. Oh God, skeletons... They were the ranged enemies and, in a typical group of enemies, the hardest to get to by far, if you can get to them at all. They dropped arrows, eliminating the middle man of crafting them yourself. Your best friend in this game was never a diamond sword or any sword at all, but a bow and arrows. All of this gets chucked out the window and no thinking is needed once the ability to sprint was added. In fact, the only enemy I know for sure that can outrun you in 1.15 is an Enderman, and they don't even start off hostile(edit: Phantoms exist). One of my favorite mods that gave them some of their power back was the Epic Siege mod, but that still doesn't really feel right. I'll just say it, I think mobs should be able to sprint too.

I agree to some small degree, but I also don't. The mobs HAVE grown with players. Zombies are not any stronger then they used to be, however they now spawn more zombies when hit which usually creates a horde scenario. Very fitting of the zombie. However the sweeping edge helps counteract this, making zombies rather weak overall. They have the most useless drop because of this. Skeletons are nerfed far too much by the shield, but this is a necessity. The power of the skeleton far outmatched even creepers because creepers can be avoided by simple distance and Skeletons. However, skeletons have rushdown/sprint away mechanics to help offset. They drop 2 very useful items, bones for farms and arrows, as well as bows sometimes. Spiders are the most useless. They have not grown at all, and the spider eye changes nothing. They exist as a source of string. They need to be immune to fall damage and have cling mechanics for starters, to make them true Cave threats. They should also actively seek dark and shade. Creepers haven't changed and really don't need too. Soon, explosions will still affect shields with heavy knockback still making them more threatening, and block damage is already a threat. Gunpowder is a bigger reward now then ever with Elytra. Now for the new standard mobs: Baby Zombies should be the first talked about. They add an extra challenge due to their small hitbox and fast speed while keeping zombie traits, though they are uncommon. Endermen are not a direct threat, but an unlucky glance or actively attacking them can be a huge threat. They are easy to cheese but being caught out puts you at serious risk due to their movespeed, attack power, health and teleportation. All of this is rewarded with Ender Pearls, essential to get to the End and to teleport, yourself. The Witches are another uncommon threat, but god can they be a threat. Harming potions aren't the worst thing in the world considering their attack rate, but poison lasts along time forcing you to essentially hide or to be on half a heart for roughly 30 seconds. The only counter is milk, which is an unlikely thing to have on you since it takes an inventory slot, and cows don't spawn in caves. Good timing on killing them can be rather rewarding with a free potion, plus some extra goodies like gunpowder. All the Illagers types are reasonably dangerous, turning Mansions and raids into a risk. As for the Nether, it is also pretty balanced: Blazes are what you go to fortresses for, and are honestly kind of busted. Piglin trading helps however with fire resist potions before you can easily craft them. Even with fire resist though, blaze melees are pretty strong. The range of a blaze is nearly infinite, allowing them to easily snipe you. The reward of course is essential, and is worth getting even after the end for fire resist and strength. The Ghast is the nether creeper, with far less subtly but the range to counteract it. And since the nether is made of netherrack and soul sand/soil, be prepared for a sea of napalm, making shielding inefficent. You can only run, use a bow or have good timing to fight back. Gunpowder is always nice and another useful potion ingredient, as well. Magma Cubes are basically nether slimes for the basalt deltas and fortresses. They probably won't kill you if they're all your fighting, but a large one especially can really interrupt blaze and wither skele fights and add in that extra damage. A perfectly decent reward for a decent mob. Hoglins are very interesting. They have strange mechanics where they war with piglins and are afraid of blue shrooms of all things, but are comparable to a slightly faster Iron Golem in terms of fighting. The risk is balanced by the sheer amount of pork they drop. Piglins are also interesting, as they give incentive to wear a gold armor in the nether. This is pretty well balanced. One, gold is very frail and can break quickly. Two, in bastions you usually have to fight them regardless. And three, wearing gold boots or helmet compared to Iron or even diamond/netherite is a pretty big armor disadvantage against other nether threats, possibly adding half a heart of damage from all sources you otherwise wouldn't take. The reward is their trades, mainly as they are not a direct combat threat. Zombie piglins have always been scary, though deaths by them may seem rare, the offchance of you happening to hit one by accident could cause a horde unlike any other. And if you intentionally hit them, thats entirely on you. And then theres the wither skeletons. One of the most deadly things to fight, though they are as tall as enderman so they can be cheesed. But enderman don't attack you randomly so you can't always prepare. Nothings worse then being withered then a blaze hits you as well. Survival is far from guaranteed if that happens. Worse yet, the reward is only gotten with enough of their deaths, so you must kill lots to get a fight with the wither, for a nether star. Does this make minecraft difficult? Not as much as it used to be, even with all these mobs. [Not to mention rarer mobs that can be scary, like Trident Drowned that deal 5 hearts roughly with no armor and rapid fire.] BUT it can still be a risk. Your death will almost always be a culmination of many mobs, or biting off more then you can chew with one really strong mob. Essentially, dying will be your fault. This makes players braver as they go into night and dark caves with less armor, and they will take more damage. Even now I still die pretty often in minecraft due to overconfidence to survive a situation because I take on far more situations like that more often, which you could argue is a bad thing for Minecraft to sort of incentivise by making the game overall easier. Because of the fear of the night, players were more cautious so they usually died less. But being cautious can also be really boring. Sitting in your house, not being able to sprint at all, these things make the game harder but not necessarily funner. Thats my textwall take on minecrafts balance.

I do really think you missed something in the conclusion. You did say that the current survival mode is good at some things, you didn't at all touch on what those things are and I think you might have missed them. Modern survival is a resource gathering and "farm" building game that is about getting progressively more and more end game stuff. The survival type difficulty also introduces itself later on when you go to the end or nether for the first time. Getting your first elytra or raiding an ocean monument without water breathing potions can still be a "survival" style challenge, even if it isn't the main goal of the game. I can spend tens of hours working on various experience farms to make it easier and easier to make sure I can always have fully repaired versions of the most powerful enchantments, and that's not even mentioning the type of villager trading or fish farms necessary to keep stocked on mending books. Once you have elytra and want to be able to fly regularly, you'll need a creeper or witch farm to sustain your new fireworks addiction. Creeper and witch farms are far from trivial to build. Anyways, I think I get exactly what it is you miss about the alpha version, and I strongly encourage you to try out TerraFirmaCraft, which is a mod that does exactly what you are talking about in this video. It's the direction minecraft *could* have gone in, but didn't. And it stays true to the "survival" title.

Modern minecraft "survival" is more of a tycoon game, in which you build and expand factories/farms. This is just not what i played minecraft for. The game does'nt encourage building anymore so i mostly build the minimum to survive (one bed, a furnace, a crafting table, sometimes an enchanter and an Anvil). After that, there is not realy a purpose in building and you don't even need a farm if you have a fire aspect sword. ps: sorry if i misspelled anything. English is not my first language.

I think Minecraft hase evolved past what it was trying to be in the beginning. The fact that you enjoyed the original survival aspect will make you definitly disapointed that the current game is not balanced towards that type of gameplay. But instead, the game is now more about achieving your own goals. I personally don't like creative mode much, since it feels like an easy win, whereas survival takes effort. It is the fact that you can die, that you need to do a little bit of menial tasks that gives the goals you achieve their value. But the early versions felt quite puniching to me. I thought the game was too challenging, and now like it a lot more. I expect that, were it not called 'survival mode', it would put you in a better mindset for the type of game minecraft currently is. I do agree that the caves are monotonous, and that the floating grass spawns is really weird.

Another youtuber named Whitelight made a similar video about how Minecraft isn't really about survival anymore, so much as it's about conquest. That is, you go around the world to conquer things like nether fortresses, end cities, desert temples, woodland mansions, etc. I'd suggest checking his stuff out, if you haven't already.

9sven6 I play mostly in creative and I disagree that it doesn’t take effort. Survival and creative have different goals and different purposes. The whole point of creative is that you have more freedom to make literally anything you want without having to deal with the survival aspects. It still takes effort to actually design what you want to build and make it look really good. I’ve had lots of experience and practice with perfecting my build style. The effort comes from the creative process (that’s why it’s called creative) of designing what you want and actually making it look halfway decent, which is harder than most people think. Every time that I complete an enormous project in creative, I feel like I did make an achievement. To say that achievements made in creative have no value/less value than in survival is absurd. For example, I recently built a massive Star Destroyer in a custom void world in order to simulate outer space. I would never be able to do that in survival. I never understand why people say that creative mode is like a “cheat” mode because they’re kinda missing the point of it.

@@Barfitlegriff people say that creative mode is more 'cheaty' than survival, because there's no effort in regards to achieving half of the job in regards to building your projects; there's no effort in regards to obtaining these resources, no challenge in refining or farming resources or tools as you prepare for your project. Instead you can just keep placing and destroying blocks as you see fit until you'd achieved whatever satisfaction that you might, and then you're done. There's no dangers, challenges, nothing.

then they should stop calling the mode 'survival,' and focus more on calling it something else, as this game as it stands right now is not 'survival.' There are no actual environmental challenges that you face anymore right out of the gate, and there's no opposition in regards to playing the game. By this point, it's literally just creative mode with extra steps.

The problem is that that survival mode doesn't give you much of an incentive to build to overcome challenges and get that achievement. As a result, stuff like "recource gathering, crafting smelting, and maybe even building farms" feel less like surviving and more like tedious chores. Why build a castle when a simple bed already beats the night's challenges? Why build a farm when animals spawn so much that food and thus healing is plentiful? The game gives very little extrinsic motivation to conquer more of it. Compare this to Terraria

I get how your whole idea of Minecraft being too easy and how that makes the survival not as fun. However at its core I don’t think minecraft is a survival game. I wouldn’t compare it to other survival games like subnautica because it’s not trying to be subnautica. The sandbox element in minecraft is the main takeaway, surviving is just an obstacle that makes your end product feel earned. I’m not saying that your critiques are bad but it’s kinda like expecting a great story from a Mario game. If you were to come at survival with a different viewpoint, I think you would like it more and you got your expectations of good survival gameplay from alpha, but the game has developed to accommodate what it’s really strong at. It’s what I feel makes minecraft closer to a platform then a game because of the potential of the stuff you can create or the stuff you can do.

Yeah. I usually play minecraft in peaceful survival with keep inventory on. I like taking breaks from building in order to collect resources, complete achievements, just vibe to music while mining, and I find it a bit more rewarding to build something nice in survival than in creative. This is definitely a major difference in mindset. If you are expecting a difficult survival game with complex mechanics around food, enemies, and shelter, this definitely isn't the game for you. This game is meant as a creative sandbox, and it does that pretty fantastically. Obviously, it's doing something right for the right kind of people, or it wouldn't be nearly as popular as it is. It does great in being just limited enough to make you think outside the box with how you build, while being diverse enough that there are many options to keep someone creatively minded engaged. I kind of would compare this game to Stardew Valley: it's not meant to be challenging (unless you want it to be), but more of something to escape to. At least that's how I feel about it. If anybody wants a game similar to minecraft, but is more like a survival game than a sandbox, I would recommend Valheim or Subnautica. Both of them have great survival aspects while also giving you creative freedom in how to build bases.

Counter-ish-argument: Minecraft isn't JUST a Survival game anymore. Minecraft has to account for a whole lot of different play-styles (for example, I primarily play survival to build up a base and gather a whole bunch of diamonds, have cute dogs, trade with funny big nose men, and I find constant death really annoying.) So, if they had just kept this level of difficulty, I doubt I would have enjoyed playing it... ever? (Also I think that modern day Minecraft is still plenty difficult. Granted, you just have to seek it out in places like caves and the Nether, but that means new players/casual players have a little bit of a safe area to just have fun instead of waiting for 12 minutes to play the game again.) Also, mob spawning has changed a lot, and they rely a lot more on getting you trapped in a big "mob" with diverse enemies, so having this cut-throat AI really wouldn't work here, because if one enemy overwhelms you, then having 12 spiders all on you is literally impossible. Also also, you complain about beds, so why not just... not use them?

Current minecraft survival is more like... limited creative. And "limited creative" is a lot of fun, it adds some nice challenge to have to collect every block yourself rather than have them all available to you. It encourages you to make the best gear you can, or large farms to collect materials. I think you're right that minecraft lost something when it lost certain survival mechanics though. Especially what you were saying about how there's little incentive to build other than that you simply want to. You don't need to build big fortifications to keep out monsters. But if we were to revert to the old system, I don't think that would be better. It would take away from that "limited creative" mode too much imo. So let's look to one of the places in the game where you *do* still need to do this: villages. If you leave a village on its own for long enough, chances are the villagers there are gonna disappear. They'll fall down holes, or get attacked by monsters, or what have you. Whenever I try to protect a village, I have to build a wall around it to keep mobs out, light up everything, and make sure it's not pockmarked with ravines and caves (it usually is, for some reason). I think this is great, it gives a real incentive to build. So what if there was more like this? Make people have to protect their cattle, and their pets, and the villages they live in. Make certain new mobs in the night attack them, and change the AIs of current mobs to require more than they currently do so you can't just shove them in a hole to keep them safe from the monsters. I think this would be a great way to bring some of this challenge back without taking away from minecraft's current strengths.

I think the incentive to build is less about surviving, and more about gathering resources. Just building the bare essentials doesn't take much, though building things like a wood farm or massive crop lands or villager trading halls - there's plenty of stuff to build.
@colbyboucher6391
@colbyboucher6391 Жыл бұрын
@@miimiiandco None of that takes much to build at all, and besides, that's cyclical. You're building things so that you can get resources more easily so you can build things. Might as well have just built things in Creative mode because it's not like you're in any danger.
