Wow, this was just amazing. I'm still very new to shooting video, lenses and lighting and this is really going to help a lot. I wish I could get your advice on lighting my own videos, I quite like what I'm able to achieve but I feel it could be so much better. I shoot videos for my electronic ambient music on my YT channel, while I think they're acceptable I'm struggling to get the cinematic look and have to rely a lot on colour grading. Doesn't help that I'm in a very small/cramped studio, using cheap LEDs! Have to at least get me one of those Colourspijkes! Thanks for the awesome videos!
@MediaDivision4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man… color grading is a necessity when shooting with DSLR or Mirrorless. Have a look at Filmconvert. It is a pretty fast solution to get you closer to something I would consider cinematic. Lighting wise, try a couple of things… backlight looks more cinematic. CInematic light is poetic and usually not ideal for moderation and vice versa. For moderation, I would usually go with a big light source… Ideally a bounce of a huge diffusion

I don't see value for us in that... you can't tell a story that way. Things are not happening in real time and the entry in sophisticated results is costly. Capturing the beauty of the cosmos in a cinematic fashion has been done so many times. Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey does it very nicely.

You are totally right about needing to buy up the medium format film lenses before they go the way of anamorphics haha.

@@GxAce I don't know myself yet… thats the whole excitement ;-) Yeah……… I saw that the other day after you posted that in "Anamorphic Shooters" really digged the look of that one and I am yellow of envy that you had a H6D to play with. I was surprised that your sankor gave you a workable field of view with the medium format lenses. I'm working on a "ultra Panavision 70" episode myself to recapture the look of Ben Hur and the Hateful eight. The lighting tut in this episode is shot on that setup already. Where are you located?
@GxAce5 жыл бұрын
@@MediaDivision Fantastic! Someone must have posted it there, but I'll definitely join the group. I got super lucky with Hasselblad seeing my previous video where I originally machined and mounted the anamorphic on my 500c/m and thinking it was cool enough to try on digital! Yeah, as long as you shoot over an 85mm equiv lens you are golden. I was trying to get my hands on an anamorphic with a larger rear diameter while I had the H6D but no such luck. Hot damn am I excited for that video!! This current video looks great. You definitely have one of the best shot youtube channels out there. I'm located in Michigan USA. I'd love to figure out how to collaborate at some point!
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
@@GxAce I use the AnamorphiX by Letus as the 1.33x stretch resembles the 1.25x from ultra Panavision the closest. It allows to use 35mm medium format… with booster on FF… that is wiiiiiiide. While I totally dig the look of your setup , the rolling shutter pretty much kills it The H6D sensor read out is to slow (it is just not designed for that) and the anamorphic enhances that. My Mavo LF is much much better in that regard (while not perfect). My heart cries for an Alexa Mini LF… but it will not get it ;-). I would love to collab… lets talk again while I produce the ultra Panavision 70 episode… maybe we can put some of your H6D footage in there and I give you a shout out… would not harm your subs.

Thx for the great tips Nicolas! Always luv to see what's next!! Light is it, without it we truly have nothing, and for most Filmmakers, cinematographers, or DOP's... is the KEY to a successful film. Thanks Tom… no, i think that is way too specific for a small audience. Lighting meters are essential when working with film as you don't see the exposure on display. @@MediaDivision Amen to that. Do you have any recommendations for lenses that produce a more "mysterious" pure look to them? For example, Canon lenses are reknown for a "warmer" look, and Zeiss for a "cooler" look, but I love night photography, and really want to bring out the mystery in the unknown dark of an unfamiliar neighborhood. The beauty in the way the streetlamp pierces the darkness, the wonder in the streaks of light on the pavement winding around the edge of the alley. Something that picks up the "glow" of light so to speak. Any suggestions?

well... the Canon FD 55mm f1.2 looks very dreamy wide open and the non aspherical version is somewhat cheap.... if you want to go really wide, the Kipon IBELUX f0.85 can reveal a new world on a sensitive camera like a Sony A7sII. @@MediaDivision Yessir! Haven't finished the whole episode, so I'm not sure if you went over any "budget friendly" Ultra-fasts. I was inspired by these options you listed and looked into the Mitakon f/.95 but was disappointed since I was a Panasonic S1 and the mounts they offer (Sony E, Fuji X, Canon EOS) can't be adapted for the Leica L full frame. At this point its either the IBELUX 40 mil $1400 (LOL) or the brand new Mitakon 50mm f/.95 but I'm not supe hyped about the 50 mil focal length - I have so many fifties I'd like to get something just a bit wider.

It's interesting to watch how lighting has evolved just for KZbin bloggers. It was all about 3-point lighting, then the ring lights to keep everyones face soft. I then started to see everyone using fairy lights or groups of other small old-fashioned bulbs - to have multiple spots of bokeh light. Today I'm seeing neon colored lights in the backgrounds - neon blue and purple most commonly with a regular white light on the subjects face.

alternative option to the Aputure LS-mini20d is a bi-color Dedo LEDzilla, also has spot/flood option with fresnel front and powers from compact sony batteries, plus its so small you can use it as a top camera light, which is great for some uses.
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
I like Dedo.... and it is Bi-Color, but a 3rd of the power for over double the price is hard to swallow for me.
@Patrick-jj5nh5 жыл бұрын
@@MediaDivision yea its fair enough, i think the aputure wasn't out yet when i bought the dedo, buttt i also heard sometimes the aputure's fan can get a bit noisy? i used to do a lot of interviews sometimes in tight spaces so that would have been a big no no. also looks a tiny bit bulky to use as a ENG style topmic as i described, which can be a neat feature of the dedo, but with u on the power and price.
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
@@Patrick-jj5nh not this one, no... the large 300 D is barely audible.... funny enough the power supply for the 300 D is very audible.... idiots ;-) The LS-mini is not a great light, but it is cheap, bright and it is compact... just right for this set.
