Wow! This is amazing. I love the dramatic effect that harf light gives. I really enjoy seeing the photos with each light on alone. As always, unique content with stunning results. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻

As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I thought it might be your video - you create such beautiful portraits. Thanks for the great lighting tips. I like how you used the cards. Pretty cool that Elinchrome displays flash duration. Take care.

Hi John. Your friend from across the pond again. Thanks for this video. It's given me some ideas to work with. This was a great shot by the way and I'm a fair way off capturing something like this but it will happen eventually. I will be booking a half hour slot with you some time soon as I'm working on a portfolio of portraits to add to my product shots! Take care fella and look forward to your next upload.

I think it's a great image. Yes... the light in the glasses does draw attention, then again we as humans are naturally drawn to the eyes of a person. I probably would have experimented using a tighter or narrow reflector behind a scrim or frost gel to see if I could achieve it at a greater distance making it smaller in his glasses. Nevertheless the short flash duration is what made a huge difference in the look in the end.

A 7” reflector would have worked too if you wanted a smaller catch light. .

Hey man...The image is amazing as usual... I have a not related question... did you shoot this video at night with a fresnel out of the window? lol Sorry I always keep my eye in the background and something was off for me lol... it looks like night time... but there is the light outside lol

Thanks! It was recorded mid morning and the back light is the sun.

Great, thanks a lot John! Nice result and very nice explanation of the lighting setup. May I kindly ask which focal length you use? Did you ever make a video about focal lengths and camera position?
@JohnGress2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! My focal length for this image was 33mm. Here is a video I made about focal legnths kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooW0k5V_ob5nnc0

cool video thanks, great, strong shot! May I ask whether you have all of a more complex setup like this here (incl. the use of the cucoloris etc.) already in mind at the beginning? Or do you rather build, enhance and extend during the shoot?
@JohnGress2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ronny. This was a recreation of a previous shoot that I did. But when I did that one it was a process. I knew what modifiers I was going to use, but the use of the cucoloris was to solve a problem. I didn’t forsee the problem and that’s usually what happens when I use flags and bounce sources.

What's your preferred brand for your backdrops? The ones you use always add nice punch to your photo sessions.

great tutorial as usual John. The light on the background is that coming from post production edit or is it from the fill 70cm bd ?
@JohnGress2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It’s from the two lights in the front.

Love your videos John! this question is off topic, but, do you see yourself buying an R3 in the near future?

Thanks! No worries. I don't really have a need for a high speed camera, but if I still shot sports, I would be getting one.

Interesting video and great photo. However, as a glass wearer I generally dislike photos of me, or anybody else for that matter, that have reflections in the glasses. As a photographer i do everything possible to avoid reflections in the glasses, except ask the person to remove them. Reflections in mirrored sunglasses is an obvious and absolute exception. But your goal was to have a reflection That's what matters.
